This beautiful property offers a winning combination of being well off the main road for privacy and quiet without being remote, with a huge water view and striking sunsets over Rodman's Hollow, the adjacent 230-acres of conservation land to the west. Some of the island's most dramatic and secluded beaches along with a freshwater pond perfect for swimming are a short walk or bike ride away.
The cottage itself is charming and cozy, with a large, spacious open plan downstairs featuring a living/dining area and a bright open kitchen with access to the back patio for grilling and outdoor dining. There are three bedrooms: the downstairs bedroom with patio access contains a queen bed; an upstairs bedroom containing a queen and a matching twin; and an upstairs bedroom containing an antique full bed. There is a full bath downstairs with a tub and a half-bath upstairs. There is also an outdoor shower. Private parking for two cars is included.
The cottage sits on 3.5 acres, which it shares with a barn and two additional cottages up the hill, one of which is available to rent as a pair that sleeps 12 - 14. Please inquire for pricing and availability.
Block Island is a great getaway and offers bird watching, deep sea fishing, hiking and biking. 40% of the island is conservation land, so trails are abundant. There are numerous beaches ranging from sandy, family friendly beaches to the more secluded south coast beaches popular with surfers and surfcasters. Explore the main port with its cute boutiques and a variety of dining options.
Block Island is accessible by plane (a short 15-minute flight from Westerly, RI) or by ferry. Ferries depart from Point Judith, RI; Newport, RI; Fall River, MA; New London, CT; Montauk, NY; Orient Point, NY. Car reservations are available if you book well in advance on some of the ferries. Most visitors rely on a bike or moped.
I'm new to VRBO! I live with my husband and son in Boston, MA. We fell in love with Block Island years ago and are thrilled to be able to offer our cottage to vacationers. We hope you enjoy it!
I'm an avid gardener and part-time musician. I also teach college history. When my family and I are not enjoying New England's beautiful spots like Block Island, we like to see other parts of the United States and travel abroad, when we can.
Dean Lampros purchased this cottage in 2013
Few other properties on Block Island offer the combination of a large ocean view and a site alongside Rodman's Hollow, a 230-acre nature preserve, in addition to being well distant from the main road to allow for privacy, peace and quiet. Vail Beach, one of the island's most stunning and secluded beaches with a long sandy stretch and great surf, easily accessible by footpath, and Fresh Pond, great for swimming, are both a short walk away, only 5 minutes by bicycle. A more lovely and peaceful spot would be difficult to find.
The cottage is carefully decorated in a shabby chic style. The view from the property is indeed beautiful, as are many in this part of Block Island. Great stargazing and a wide view of the ocean, especially from the top floor. Block Island in general is one of our favorite places to visit: beautiful beaches, great restaurants, and not too crowded due to the natural bottleneck of the ferry.
We asked the owner ahead of time how we would get into the house, and he said he would be there when we arrived. In the end, we had to knock on his door, and he seemed surprised (and not necessarily pleased) that we did not understand that there was no key and we should go right in. The size was OK for our family of four, but I think more would be tight. The kitchen equipment was a little sparse and not all in great condition, which has not been our prior experience on Block Island. Note that the cottage forms part of a four-building complex: two rental cottages, the owner's house, and a barn, which was right next to the cottage we stayed in. Ask ahead of time if any work is planned for any part of the property: there were major renovations to the barn going on for about half our stay, resulting in some noise, some loss of privacy, and some hassle (not the workmen's fault) about using the narrow driveway. The other cottage is also quite close, so your experience will partly depend on how courteous the other renters are (we had some loud music and an unexpected stroll past our bathroom window).
My family stayed at Dean's cottage for a week in July and had a great time.
The house was clean and came well equipped with everything we needed. We spent a lot of time on the back deck that is on the same level as the first floor and one step down into the back and side yard.
The grounds are beautiful. We spent time in the yard playing games as well as enjoying the sunsets, views of the rolling hills as well as views of the ocean.
Dean was very kind and great to deal with. We would highly recommend Dean's cottage.
The property is new, well-equipped and exceptionally attractive. It is more like a wildlife refuge than a vacation getaway. Birds, deer, proximity to the natural world and peaceful quiet. Our family loved every minute of our stay. We missed having a deck or terrace on the Western side of the house for viewing the sunset, but we sat on the grass and reveled in the beautiful light. The views in all directions are stunning!
Dean was welcoming and the house was wonderful. We loved the cool breezes that blew through all the windows and throwing around a football on the beautiful lawn. We sat and watched the sunset over the Atlantic and were completely charmed by the property. A perfect retreat and holiday!
This was a fantastic experience from start to finish. The place was beautiful and cozy. The views were spectacular. The owner was receptive but not intrusive. I would highly recommend this cottage to anyone looking for a place to stay on Block Island.
This house is stunning, simply stunning. We arrived a cold day in December, and the house and grounds were as beautiful as the pictures. This despite the rainy weather. The views from the house are even more beautiful than the pictures show. The house is tastefully decorated in antiques, so you feel like you are transported to another century, with modern amenities (TV, washer, dryer, dishwasher, microwave). The kitchen has everything that you need if you wanted to cook. I was there with my husband and 8 month old daughter, and never felt like I lacked anything.
The drive to the house is itself scenic, through some unpaved roads, and eventually leading to a clearing where the house sits on top of the hill, looking over rolling meadows out to the sea. I felt transported to a Jane Austen novel for the weekend. Just such a memorable experience all around - highly recommend it.
