Nature Retreat

Our newly renovated 18th-century Paradise Farmhouse on Aquidneck Island combines comfort and functionality with a spectacular location. The Farmhouse offers a unique location for nature vacation retreats located on the 325-acre Norman Bird Sanctuary with 7 miles of hiking trails, gardens, and rolling fields. The property is nestled between gorgeous beaches, local vineyards, farm stands, and just a 5-minute scenic drive to historic Newport and all of its famous attractions.

The Farmhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places. This 6,000 square foot structure has six bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms (2 rooms with full size beds, 1 bunk room for 6 and 3 of the bedrooms can be set up with either 1 king or 2 twin beds). All bedrooms have bathrooms (1 with a full bath and 5 with showers and 1.5 additional bathrooms on first floor). The Farmhouse is nicely appointed and provides overnight accommodations with a well equipped kitchen, 2 dining areas, 7 decorative fireplaces, 3 common/living rooms and a nicely furnished terrace, for a maximum of 16 guests. The house also includes central heat/AC, all bed linens and bathroom towels, Farmaesthetics 100% natural handmade herbal skincare products, and green cleaning supplies.

For week long rentals, 1 mid-week cleaning service can be arranged in addition to the post-checkout cleaning. Also, if interested, add on an NBS educational program or a Guided Bird Hike by an NBS Naturalist. This is the perfect house for eco-conscious families, friends and companies to explore our beautiful beaches and hiking trails. Or choose to incorporate birding, guided nature walks, nature day camps for the children, or off-site excursions.

We thank you for considering Paradise Farmhouse at the Norman Bird Sanctuary for your vacation retreat, especially because your stay here helps support the Norman Bird Sanctuary’s mission to preserve and educate all age levels on the stewardship and sustainable use of coastal land and water resources.

We look forward to welcoming you to Paradise!

About Norman Bird Sanctuary

Paradise Farmhouse is a part of the Norman Bird Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization that maintains the largest open space area in Newport County. Established in 1949 at the bequest of Mabel Norman Cerio, the Norman Bird Sanctuary, under the charge of her will, was to maintain the land “for the propagation, preservation, and protection of birds, and where birds and bird life may be observed, studied, taught, and enjoyed by lovers of nature and by the public generally so interested in a spirit of humanity and mercy.”

NBS is a mature nonprofit that has maintained steady growth throughout its history. Over the years, NBS has grown to include more than 325 acres of diverse habitats, and its mission remains true to Mabel Norman Cerio’s original vision. The Sanctuary is a community organization that has impacted the quality of life on Aquidneck Island and across the state for over sixty years.

Family reunion

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 14 (including 6 children, ages 6-15) spent the Labor Day weekend at Paradise Farmhouse. It was, indeed, paradisical. The bedrooms were comfortable, with en suite baths. The central air conditioning/heating was very effective (but we didn't need it). The common areas--two sitting rooms, two dining rooms--allowed different groups to form and interact (and play non-stop card and board games). The kitchen was ample. The walks in Norman Bird Sanctuary (right from the house) were inviting and perfect for all ages (6-75). Third Beach was a few minutes drive (and a few more minutes by bicycle, which avoids parking charges) and perfect for the younger children; and the older ones enjoyed surfing. It was relaxing, informal, comfortable. We had our dinners catered (multiple alternatives in the Newport area) and let the four families arrange their own breakfasts and lunches. We hired a photographer, who made excellent use of the beautiful outdoor backgrounds. I recommend it unconditionally.

If I could give the Paradise farmhouse six stars, I would!

  • 5 of 5

We rented the farmhouse for three nights to accommodate extended family during our son's wedding weekend in Newport. We had 13 people in the house and it was VERY comfortable - definitely did not feel crowded. We used the grill and the outdoor porch, made several meals for 13+ people in the kitchen, took walks on the trails and thoroughly enjoyed the ambiance of this beautiful place. The views from the house are gorgeous. It is quiet, clean and refreshingly simple. Our son and his groomsmen "got dressed" at the farmhouse and it made for a spectacular photo shoot. There is wifi, and we did not miss having a television - because it gave us more family time. Jeannie was very helpful and responsive if/when we had questions. This was beyond excellent for our family. We hope to return.

Visitors from Cali

Part of our family, nine in all including 3 children, stayed at the Farmhouse over the Fourth of July weekend. There is plenty of room at the Farmhouse; we even had unused bedrooms. The furnishings and style of the home are wonderful and comfortable. The air conditioning came in handy on a few days althoug we enjoyed marvelous weather. We also hosted a family dinner party for over 20 and there was plenty of room and the kitchen, grill, and dining supplies were all there for the chef to use. Third Beach is a 15 minute walk; Second beach (more surf) is about a 20+ minute walk.

The only minor complaints are (1) staff for the camps park at the house and walk in front of the home occasionally, (2) there was no iron/ironing board (which the staff promptly corrected), and (3) there was no shampoo for the bathrooms (although their amenities were great), and (4) there are no hair dryers. All of this was easily corrected and did nothing to diminish the quality of our stay.

The property is beautiful (we hiked to Hanging Rock) and the flowers and gardens are wonderful. So peaceful at night.

All in all, our family thoroughly enjoyed our experience at the Paridise Farmhouse.

excellent staff retreat location!

  • 5 of 5

i took our 10-person staff to norman bird sanctuary for an overnight retreat. it is the perfect space for this type of event. there was plenty of space in the farmhouse (multiple sitting rooms, large well equipped kitchen, a bathroom off of every bedroom) and it perfectly combines a rural aesthetic with modern decor and accommodations. we also used one of the meeting spaces for our activities during the day. the staff, especially lisel, were extremely helpful in answering my multiple questions. the locations is excellent as well. very close to newport and all that is ha to offer. if you want a reasonably priced location for an overnight retreat with gorgeous views and peaceful surroundings this is the place for you!

Family and friends weekend at the Paradise Farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a two-night stay at the Farmhouse at the Norman Bird Sanctuary...what a large, spacious, beautiful accommodation. With its many rooms--including a long-table dining room, smaller dining area, sitting room upstairs and downstairs, supply room filled with extra blankets and pillows, well-stocked kitchen, and bathrooms off of every bedroom plus two extra (8 bright beautiful bathrooms total)-- our 15 guests had an amazing time. At night it was quiet with only the sound of birds and during the day guests could walk the nature paths or stroll 5 mins to the beach. Truly a magical place and all guests were strategizing on how to return annually.
