The Languedoc/Aude Region: This part of the Languedoc has a sunny Mediterranean climate boasting 300 days of sunshine each year.

Languedoc offers something for everyone. Miles of long, sandy beaches, Cathar castles, fabulous scenery, great cuisine and vineyards in abundance.

The most renowned attractions in the area are the medieval walled ‘Cite’ and the Canal du Midi, both of which are World Heritage Sites and should not be missed. However, there is much more to see in this delightful region. The surrounding area is one of outstanding natural beauty and nearby villages such as Limoux, Mirepoix and St Hilaire, to name but a few, are both pretty and interesting.

Further afield, Narbonne, Montpellier, Toulouse and Pezenas are all well worth a visit.

Carcassonne/Montclar - Activities: Montclar is an excellent base from which to sample the wide variety of activities that are available in the region.

In addition to great walks that can be taken from the house, the more adventurous might enjoy kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting that are all reached within a short drive.

Lac de la Cavayere, a man made beach and lake close to Carcassonne, is a 20 minute drive away. Here there is a sandy beach, swimming, picnic areas, walks and other leisure activities including an excellent treetop adventure course for all ages.

The famous Canal du Midi also offers boat trips or boat hire or a quiet stroll along the river that winds its way through Carcassonne itself.

There are numerous markets that are a feature of life in the area. In particular, the Saturday morning market at Place Carnot in the centre of Carcassonne, is an absolute must, but the markets at nearby Limoux (Friday mornings)and Mirepoix (Monday mornings) are also well worth a visit.

About Nigel Sammons

My wife and I bought 'Labyrinthe' in 2004 and neither of us has regretted our decision for a single second. The moment we walked through to the upstairs terrace we were well and truly hooked.

We thoroughly enjoy equipping the house with all modern conveniences and it is very much our 'home from home'. We spend at least four months of each year at the house - just wish it could be more.

The house lends itself ideally to large groups and we are enjoying an increasing number of holidays in the south of France with our ever growing family.

Nigel Sammons purchased this villa in 2004

Why Nigel Sammons chose Montclar

Carcassonne and the surrounding area offers something for everyone -

- fabulous countryside

- an incredible choice of great restaurants

- vineyards and wine caves

- history and heritage - La Cité, Canal du Midi, Cathar castles, Abbeys etc

- white water rafting (not quite for us but is very popular with many of our guests)

We could go on, but it would be very remiss of us not to mention that we have found the people in the region to be so friendly and helpful.

What makes this villa unique

We bought the house largely because of its fabulous setting. It is so peaceful and we never tire of the views over the countryside. The heated pool and lovely garden are added bonuses.

Although the house is in a quiet location, there are several villages with amenities that are only a short drive away. However, we tend to gravitate towards the major towns of Carcassonne and Limoux, both of which can be reached in fifteen minutes.

So - peace and tranquility at home, but with easy access to all the benefits that are available in this beautiful region. In our view, and we accept that we might be somewhat biased, Labyrinthe offers the best of both worlds.

Fabulous stay in a beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

A group of nine family members stayed a week in Labyrinthe in Montclar. This was our second visit to the property and we were not disappointed. The house is in a beautiful setting and enjoys extensive views over the countryside. The house is thoughtfully furnished to a very high standard and everything we needed was on hand. There was plenty of crockery, glasses, cutlery etc and a dishwasher on both floors made clearing up after each meal much easier. The whole house is spotlessly clean and there was plenty of hot water for everyone to shower. We were made very welcome on arrival and the owner went to great trouble to make sure we had everything we needed for the one member of the family who is not very mobile.

We couldn’t praise the house and setting enough - we had a really relaxing and comfortable holiday with our family in a beautiful area. Would highly recommend this house and hope to return in the future.

Lovely Villa,Stunning position

  • 5 of 5

We were a 3 generation party, grandparents and 2 families,5 children and the villa was perfect for our group. The accommodation was very spacious and plenty of bathrooms----essential with a large group! The villa was well appointed and of a high standard and the 2 kitchens were well equipped for all catering needs, the big fridge freezerand ice maker particularly appreciated. The cupboard with childrens games was well used by us and the boules pitch provided much entertainment.

The garden was delightful and beautifully maintained and the heated pool was the highlight of the week for the children ranging from 12yrs to 2yrs.! We had breakfasts on the terrace with panoramic views and star gazing at night ! A lovely house set in the peace and quiet of the French countryside, thanks to Nigel for allowing us to stay in his delightful home

A true gem - perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What a special place. From the welcome, the cleanliness, the space, the amazing beds, the views, the pool....I could continue for a long time....We were at Labyrinthe for an extended stay this summer and it was a delight to be there every single day - even in scorching temperatures (more shade/ umbrellas/parasols please!). The only thing to mention. is that there was not enough shade in the afternoons if you wanted to sit by the pool. But I’m not complaining!! The pool was a great hit. We were in it all the time! It was wonderful and kept sparkling by Martin. We didn’t use the bbq as it was too hot in the evenings to do so but belive it was brand new. Kitchens were well stocked and all things provided. Both upstairs and downstairs. Used the downstairs fridge for drinks and ice creams and for when too hot to eat outside. A great space. Wanted for nothing. Nigel, a generous and knowledgable host in every way. Thank you for everything. We will be back very soon. As I shiver in the UK now returned we are holding on to such special memories of a very special place.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much indeed for taking the time and trouble to write such a positive review - I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay. It has been a particularly hot summer in France, and I fully take on board your point regarding the need for more shade. As a consequence, we are in the process of sourcing parasols/umbrellas for our guests' use. Many thanks again, Nigel

Beautiful house in idyllic setting

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two weeks and could honestly have stayed for a third week. The peace and tranquility were perfect. We have rented many French houses and this is the best we have had the pleasure of holidaying in.

The house is large and spacious and well set out. All the bedrooms are roomy and comfortable. We were a party of 4 adults and chose to use two of the downstairs bedrooms which offered lovely views and had ensuite bathrooms. The kitchens are well equipped and we enjoyed bar b q's on the terrace waiting for the stars and fireflies to emerge and the nightingale to start it's nocturnal chorus.

The pool is lovely and heated and the gardens well maintained.

The location of the property means you do need a car but this is something we do anyway and means you can have the seclusion and privacy of being there and the option to explore if you choose. Carcassonne is well worth a visit as was the market in Mirepoix. We also enjoyed a walk by the canal du midi at Trebes and Rennes-le-Chateaux was fascinating with breathtaking views.

Both the owner and management company were extremely helpful and easily contactable. We will definitely return.

Beautiful villa in an idyllic setting.

  • 5 of 5

We booked for a week as part of my husbands 60th birthday celebrations taking the family - 6 adults & 4 grandchildren away to this lovely area of France.

On arrival we were met by Debbie & Richard who showed us round and were available for any questions. This house is exceptional - lovely bedrooms & bathrooms, beautiful views, two kitchens - all fully equipped, two terraces and a beautiful pool area and gardens with fruit trees - the cherries were delicious and the children loved picking & eating them! The petanque court, table tennis & table football were enjoyed by all!

We all loved the attention to the little details from maps & games to torches in the bedside drawers!

There is so much space for all and I cannot recommend Villa Labyrinthe highly enough and look forward to going back again.

I would also like to thank Nigel for his prompt responses and for the use of his lovely home.

Extremely high quality property

  • 5 of 5

Labyrinthe is exceptional! An amazing home where attention to detail is paramount and is also managed by an extremely efficient team. The setting is very peaceful and nature abounds. We were a party of eight adults and enjoyed a fabulous week at the property taking full advantage of the pool, pétanque, table tennis, games and of course the wines from the surrounding vineyards. The main bedrooms are arranged like private suites so that all could enjoy their privacy without the clamour for bathrooms. Everything here is well thought through.

We arranged a private chef from La Belle Assiette to cook a meal for us one evening to celebrate my wife's 'special birthday' and this proved to be a huge success.

We rent frequently in France and Labyrinthe is the best house to date and cannot be recommended highly enough.
