Situated 12Km N of Bergerac in a tranquil location on the edge of a typical, pretty Dordogne village, this 19th Century farmhouse has recently undergone a total renovation combining modern facilities with striking original features retaining the charm and rustic character of the old building. There is a good sized private pool close to the house with a overlooking deck allowing convenient supervision. The courtyard is the focus for summer outdoor living and is a totally enclosed spacious area with open outbuildings providing a covered outdoor dining area. A deck leads down from the house and there is plenty of sunny patio space around the pool. The large garden has walnuts, cherries, peaches & plums - help yourself! St Julien is adjacent to Bergerac's quality Pecharment wine region and within an hour of famous Bordeaux vineyards, including St Emilion. There are bikes in the barn and a few shops & restaurants are within cycling distance. There is a very good equine centre nearby, with golf, fishing and canoeing in the local. The house is equipped with good Wi-Fi and satellite TV.

Summary – Overall a good vacation in a great location, lots of history and fabulous local cuisine an
General – St Julien de Crempse is a lovely French hamlet close to Bergerac, it has a unique history and interesting provenance. We actually attended the commemorative service on the 9th of August, both at the church and memorial service afterwards.
Great proximity to nearby Bergerac and stunning surrounding towns and villages, many of which we visited.
Local food and wine bountiful from small shops a few Kilometres away, to larger supermarkets to be found in and around Bergerac.
Neighbours were helpful, interesting and good fun.
The farmhouse - As advertised the Farmhouse has bags of character and is very charming and rustic.
It was well equipped and everything we needed was there, beds were made up with fresh linen.
There was no information pack or at least we didn’t find one, and no real handover conducted We did speak to the local contact a couple of times, but he departed on his own vacation after two days and was never seen again.
We discovered on arrival that some effort had been made to clean the farmhouse, but despite this found ourselves cleaning worktops, trash bins, oven, Fridge BBQ and outdoor area.
The bathrooms need better ventilation and the laundry basket had evidence of moisture damage.
The pool and surrounding area was slightly disappointing and a concern for the following reasons:
• The pool was never properly cleaned or PH readings checked during our two-week stay.
• We resorted to attempting to clean the pool ourselves using the net and boom.
• The pool-cleaning boom had two splits in the hose.
• On advice from the owner and searching online we did establish how to safely deploy the ‘chlorine tablets’.
• There was some loose masonry surrounding the pool and grouting occasionally fell in to the pool.
• Some of the wooden duckboards were loose and at least two had screws protruding dangerously from them.
• The wheels fell off one of the sun loungers.
• Two wooden outside chairs were damaged.
Although we had a very enjoyable stay, the pool remained a concern of ours throughout. We count ourselves as very resourceful people but felt slightly exposed at times.
Great old house. Close to amenities. Has everything needed for a great holiday.
This is an authentic old French house. Lots of character. It’s like a step back in time. It had everything we needed. The kids loved the pool and WiFi/tv in the evenings. There is a fantastic boulangerie close by La Fournil de QUeyssac. Best bread I had in France. There is a great inland swimming lake 10 mins away at Lac Pombonne. Bill was very helpful and has several bikes we could use. The local country roads are quiet and great for cycling. The neighbours are also very friendly. Dimitri next door was very welcoming. This house is fully recommended if you want a genuine French experience!
Thanks David, glad you and your family enjoyed your stay. Bill
Beautiful farmhouse in a quiet rural location
We had a wonderful two weeks in this charming house. The kitchen is fantastic especially if you enjoy cooking the local produce, and the pool is a lovely size and so refreshing on a warm day. There are loads of shady spots around the garden and a couple of places to eat, either on the deck over looking the pool or in the shady covered area at the rear of the garden. The house itself is lovely, although the stairs as mentioned are quite steep and my elderly Dad decided to sleep on the very comfortable sofa bed so he could be near the bathroom at night. We enjoyed days out visiting local wineries, kayaking on the river Vezere and exploring Bergerac. The restaurants in nearby Campsegret are worth a mention - Le Chat Perche for a cheap lunch or great pizza and La Terrasse for a fantastic evening meal. This is a lovely place to stay, I enjoyed watching the bees and hummingbird moths on the lavender and the the bats swooping over the pool in the evening! I should mention the church bells - you do get used to them after a few days, even the 7am wake up ones! Highly recommended.
Impressive location and house.
Brilliant holiday. The garden area is superb. Shade or sun all day. Locals are nice people and very helpful. We've been staying in houses in Europe for at least 30 years this was one of the best we've had. My only complaint is that we stayed for only 7days.
Thanks John, very glad you enjoyed your stay. Bill
Lovely traditional house
Lovely house to stay in. Full of character and comfortable and peaceful with excellent swimming pool and loads of space in the garden to relax and eat al fresco. The kitchen area especially was spacious and very attractive with plenty of equipment for cooking. The surrounding countryside was stunning for walks and the feeling of being completely away from the rat race was wonderful. The owners were extremely helpful and pleasant to communicate with.
Relaxing, full of character house in a quaint little village
Love this house! Superbly situated for Bergerac airport and sorties into beautiful little villages and wine tasting chateaux. Everyone really friendly and helpful and the house itself is a wonderful sun trap - mornings at the front and afternoons by the pool.
I thoroughly recommend a visit!
The local area is rich in gastronomic delights: pate, fois-gras, cheese, bread and, of course, wine to name but a few. The delightful market town of Bergerac with the river Dordogne winding lazily through it, is situated about 12km to the south while about 35km north lies the ancient cathedral city of Perigueux. Both are worth exploring, Bergerac market days are Wed and Sat. Local activities include horse riding at an impressive equestrian centre 4km from the house, canoeing on the Dordogne, cycling, fishing and golf. There are numerous leafy walks around the village. Many of the numerous chateaux along the banks of the Dordogne are open to the public as are the huge caves and grottos in the area.
St Julien de Crempse (the Crempse being the local river) is clearly signposted 4km west of Campsegret off the main Bergerac-Perigueux road. Keys are held by the friendly and informative Mr Dimitri Buchen who speaks English and lives in the presbytery behind the farmhouse.
