About Mary Sullivan

We purchased this "Lake Escape" in Jan. 2012. Our draw to this quaint, tranquil setting, is it's calming tranquility. There's plenty to do for the outdoor enthusiasts, and it's only 45 minutes to the NH State Capital in Concord, 15 minutes to Keene, and close to many other recreational activities. Our family (including our black lab, Stella), decided it's time to share this gem with other families.

Mary Sullivan purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Mary Sullivan chose Monadnock Region

Close to modern amenities and cultural activities, the quaint town of Stoddard is perfect for escaping the chaos. You'll experience a simpler way of life as you cross the wooden bridge, and wind around the corners on your climb up Shedd Hill Road. This cabin, and it's surroundings, has an abundance of natural beauty. It's ideal for year round outdoor enthusiasts, from hiking, walking, biking, fishing, boating, berry picking, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, local art, bird watching, and so much more.....

What makes this cabin unique

Who doesn't dream of staying in a rustic log cabin on a lake? This beauty is ideal for creating traditions and memories to last a lifetime......Kicking back in the rocking chairs on the screened porch listening to the loons. Take a trip down to the Marina for breakfast, lunch or dinner (and a cocktail). Check out the ice cream and penny candy while you're there. Enjoy a hike, take a journey up panoramic Pitcher Mountain to the climb the fire tower, drive or walk to the top of Blueberry Mountain to pick buckets of blueberries.

Beautiful log cabin on a beautiful lake!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful place to stay! We stayed at a perfect time in September, so the lake was quiet and it felt like we were the only 2 people on the small street. The cabin was clean, cozy and felt homey. The beds were comfortable and we loved sitting out on the screened in porch for coffee in the morning. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed and we enjoyed using the charcoal grill. We used the kayaks and explored the lake and did some fishing right from the lakefront. We found plenty of places to hike nearby and even did Monadnock one day! We enjoyed the quiet and when we wanted noise and people, it was a short 30 minute drive into Keene for shopping and restaurants. Overall this place is great for just about anybody!

Cabin by the lake has modern conveniences and old-fashioned comfort

  • 4 of 5

We three adults just came back from four nights in Mary's lovely. little cabin in the woods. Mary seems to have anticipated everybody's needs: The beds were comfortable, the kitchen/dining area was well stocked, there was w-fi and a large flat screen TV; a place to barbecue right outside the back kitchen door, next to a garden picnic table and benches; a cozy indoor gas-fired stove that warms up the cabin quickly on nippy cold mornings; but best of all, is the spacious screen porch, with wicker rockers and couches looking out over the trim yard and through the trees to glimpses of the lake. The whole cabin is scrupulously clean and Mary's signature touches were everywhere: a large emergency flashlight on the side of the fridge; a plentiful supply of bottled water; hooks for large outer garments right inside the front door; replacement garbage bin bags just where you expect to find them; charming pieces of wall art; and an overwhelming sense of peace and contentment.

The surrounding southern NH towns and villages make lovely short trip destinations, the lake is sparkling clean, the nearby marina serves good food on summer weekends, three kayaks and paddles are a generous benefit and the spacious basement has folding chairs and children's toys if you want to drive five minutes to the beach.

I can't think of a better retreat from the busy world at any time of year.

Fantastic Stay!

  • 5 of 5

I had a great time staying at the cabin on Highland Lake. Mary was very helpful with instructions and directions to the house. The place is very quiet during and the day and at night. Easy access to the lake's edge down the driveway and little hill. Even if you don't plan on going out on the water, there are some nice rocks on the shore just to sit and relax. The enclosed porch is wonderful in the morning, evening, and night. The kitchen was well-equipped and had everything I needed to cook meals for the few days I stayed. Wifi was really helpful in and around the house as the cell service in the area is not all that good. Overall I had a wonderful time and hope to return the next time I'm in the area!

Wonderful home base for adventure or cozy get away

  • 5 of 5

This cabin had so many highlights: boats, fire pit, hammock, grill, inside gas fireplace. Sitting on the enclosed porch has you perched up in the trees with the lake peeking through, as you listen to singing loons and relax in the soft breeze. The attention to detail of our hosts, like a flashlight on the fridge, cast iron pan, and candles made it feel so comfortable. We were also able to find many hikes within an hour drive. It was a wonderful vacation and we will definitely return again.

adequate

  • 3 of 5

Spent the entire month of August at "'Lake Escape" . Except for the sound of jet skis, motor boats and power tools upon occasion, this is a quiet, secluded get-a-way. There is room enough for several cars and is more affordable than many rentals in the area. The 3 lake kayaks, row boat, water toys etc. are a real plus. All mattresses are comfortable. The screened-in porch is a delightful area that also allows one to escape the overwhelming mildew/mold in the cabin. Do not store anything in the basement. My bike seat grew mold. The tap water is not suitable for drinking, plenty of drinking water is provided by owner, when requested. As one who entertains a lot, the kitchen equipment was less than adequate. The oven, when hot, is malodorous. Be sure to bring your own large pot for pasta, lobsters etc. If you drink wine, bring your own glasses.

There is access to Highland lake via a short, but steep, walk from cabin. There is no beach. Unfortunately, the recent drought and warm temps have allowed a proliferation of plant life to grow in Highland Lake this summer. Swimming from lake access is not recommended for this reason. There is a public beach on Island Pond a short drive away. I thoroughly enjoyed swimming there.

Be sure to bring your own towels, as only a few dish towels and a random towel can be found here and there. If you plan to use the kitchen, you will need to buy your own sponges, dish soap…

Did my best to Jerry-rig shades for the 2nd bedroom since none are provided. If you sleep cold, bring extra blankets. The windows are difficult to maneuver and many are missing screens.

There is a restaurant at the Marina, ½ mile down the road. Grocery stores are 20-30 min away in either Keene or Hillsborough. Was told the High Tide Restaurant in Hillsborough has great seafood, but didn’t make it there. Can’t say I can recommend any of the restaurants I sampled in the Keene/Hillsborough/Stoddared area.

Thunder and lightning storms knocked out all power 2 nights in a row, for a total of 14 hours, this included the loss of water. The marina lost power as well. The owner was unaware this outage occurred and believes it to be an unusual event. I was thankful for my camping gear. The kerosene lamps at the property are not functional and the flashlight provided contained dead batteries. Fortunately, there are lots of candles available at the cabin.

One can find cell phone coverage outside the cabin at the top of the driveway. The WiFi works well.

Owner's Response: We appreciate your feedback from your visit to our cabin. The experiences and needs of our guest's is extremely important to us. The summer of 2016 in NH, August in particular, exceeds all records as the hottest, haziest, with lowest rainfall. This resulted in drought conditions. We provide bottled water to our guests in an effort to conserve on our water resources from our private well. Additionally, we equip our basement with a dehumidifier for periods of high humidity. We're sorry you didn't reach out to us during your stay about the items you noted, as we would have been very happy to assist. While we can't control NH's weather and the elements, we have since revised our "Guest's Guidebook" to ensure the items you noted were absent, are easier to locate for future guests. We also added shades in the 2nd bdrm :-) Thank you again for your feedback. We take great pride on being responsive and available to our guests. We want to ensure every visitor has a memorable and enjoyable vacation experience.
