About Barney Gibbs
Father and Son, Chris and Barney Gibbs are born and bred-Barbadians. Saba and Barbados have shared seafaring traditions since the 17th century, and the flat, limestone island to the South is a vastly different landscape to Saba's volcanic peaks. But both islands are home to Chris and Barney.
Barney Gibbs purchased this Villa in 2009
Why Barney Gibbs chose Windward Side
Purchased as a virtual ruin in 2009, the Barbadian owners of Spyglass Villa have meticulously renovated the property as a refuge for all who choose to stay here. Through careful study of the unique Saban vernacular in its over 100 year old cottages, we have not departed from the well-crafted and intricate details of Saban architecture, while also maintaining a contemporary, but comfortable feel in the property. Saba is a quiet and charming island surrounded by spectacular sea and mountain views and each space in the home was designed to ensure that visitors enjoy peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the outside world. ‘Spyglass’ is the current name given to the property which was formerly constructed and occupied by well-known Saban Calvin Holm. After a few visits to the island the current owners decided to undertake a renovation of the property to make the house befitting of the beautiful, almost 360 degree views of the sea and mountain.

Astonishing view but....
Spyglass is a beautiful house, located nearby the main village, on a ridge offering an astonishing view. It has a great kitchen with a lot of kitchenware. Housekeeping services have been irregular and 3rd bedroom is tiny and kind of claustrophobic for children to stay alone at the ground floor when all other rooms if the villa are at the upper floor.
Great to be back
My husband and I learned to dive on Saba during our honeymoon 22 years ago. It was wonderful to be back and the icing on the cake was staying at Spyglass. It’s a wonderful place and really well-managed from reservation to checkout. I’d give more than five stars if I could.
This was our second time renting this property, and it was just as wonderful.
Amazing! Already planning our next visit.
Words don't do justice to Spyglass and pictures only give a hint of the beauty and charm. You really need to experience this to appreciate it.
Second anniversary in a row at spyglass
My wife and I love Saba and Spyglass is one of the more special places on Saba. The views are amazing and the villa is magnificent. The construction of the villa is masterful with solid build and attention to detail every where you look while designed for low environmental impact with flow through design (no AC) and solar hot water heater. Every day maid service is provided which is a very nice touch, it’s nice to cook and not do dishes. Spyglass is a real lifetime experience and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Saba, my wife and I were so struck by it the first time that we came back and brought friends exactly one year later!
On top of the world
Immaculate, charmingly designed and decorated home—although we were a little unlucky with the weather, we loved staying here. The view from this house is spectacular. The house was well stocked with towels and kitchenware—we found everything we needed. The grounds were designed for lounging while enjoying the view—an expansive sun deck, stone tub for cooling off, and an elevated covered porch off the house all provided relaxing seating for enjoying the view. The location was great for walking to the Windward Side restaurants (you must be fit as the roads to town are steep) or alternatively, taxis were readily available. The friendly taxi drivers are locals who have a wealth of information about the island. We hiked on the Mary’s Point trail which was a well maintained trail with a couple gorgeous view points and would have liked to hike the Mt Scenery trail but the top was shrouded in clouds for our entire stay. Had a delicious meal at Chez Bubba with Harry as our waiter—so pleasant and wonderful service. Would have liked to have tried The Brigadoon but with no reservation couldn’t get in—it was highly recommended. Enjoyed visiting Jobean’s glass jewelry shop and taking a quickie glass bead making lesson. She is very talented and I bought several pieces of jewelry. Would love to return to Saba and would stay at SpyGlass again!!
Spyglass Villa is the perfect retreat after a day of diving the must-see pinnacles in the Marine Park that encircle the island. Sea Saba in Windwardside would love to arrange your dives in Saba. For those who are enthusiastic about walking/ hiking, Spylgass is situated near to various trailheads near Windwardside, including the hike up to beautiful Mt. Scenery. Visit the Saba Conservation Foundation Trail Shop in Windwardside for more information.
Dining out could not be more easy in Windwardside which has a variety of restaurants at price points to suit every taste for every time of the day.
For those who want to spice things up in the kitchen themselves, Windwardside has two supermarkets to stock up your pantry.
But most of all, Spyglass is to be enjoyed by those who are looking for a little peace and quiet. Read a book. Listen to the waves in the distance and watch the Frigate Birds (Boobys) sail the air currents. They are just as free as you will be once you arrive at Spyglass...
