I currently live near Cold Spring and work in New York City. This home has been a place of healing for me during some very dark times. When I'm not working, I'm either riding my 3 horses, working the garden or baking and decorating cakes and cookies like a crazy person. I have degrees in Journalism and Philosophy and believe that life is a never-ending education in self development and community service.
Cristi Landes purchased this cottage in 2009
My Petite Retreat is a home filled with positive energy and light. It has only been filled with happiness and healing during my ownership. I purchased it at a time in my life when I needed a refuge. It enveloped me and helped me blossom into the resilient person I am today. I immediately fell in love with my home's charm, character, history, sense of family and it's general positive vibe. I hope you find the same!
When I walked into my home the first time, I was viewing it as a rental. I told the agent, I didn't want to rent it, but I wanted to buy it to make it my own. It needed much TLC, but I could see the potential in the beautiful woodwork, the charming layout and the bright airy flow of the windows. I dreamed of reading my books on the front porch while looking at Storm King Mountain through my billowing summer curtains. The charming garden, and the history behind their tending, has always captured my heart and those of people walking by. I'm proud of my home and I'm always open to share it with others.
Cristi is amazing. Such a sweetheart. She took so much personal time answering all my many questions. Ideal location in the lovely small town of Cold Springs. Highly recommend.
Thank you for your warm welcome in your cool cottage! And I do mean cool -- the air conditioning was a pleasure, and the owner left us some cut flowers and a special gift for my son. The kitchen is lovely and clean, and the bedrooms upstairs were charming with very comfortable beds. The location is ideal, especially for those like us who don't have a car. It's just a few blocks from the train station and one block from Main Street, which is chock full of charming antique shops for happy hunting, cute places to eat and the Hudson River on the other side of the tracks. Cristi gave us many suggestions as to eateries and activities. Nature walks abound, and we thoroughly enjoyed the West Point Foundry Preserve, which is within walking distance of the little house. Thanks so much for a lovely stay!
We traveled by train with two active boys almost 5 and 8 and walked a lot around Cold Spring. The house was adorable with everything we needed. As stated, no dining area which was not a problem for us during our weekend as there are a lot of dining options in the next block. The garden is quite small and looking at the street, not a place where young kids can play ball or run around. But we spent most of our time outdoor coming back to the house for sleeping, breakfasts and showering, that was really what we needed. The owner is very nice and gave us a lot of advices on what to do in Cold Spring without a car, we tried most of her suggestions during our weekend. We had a good time!
We had a great three day weekend in Cold spring. The Fourth of July festivities are pure Americana. The Petite Retreat is a great place to stay. It is very quiet (apart from the birds that sing at 5 AM!). The beds are comfortable. There is AC in both bedrooms and the living room, but we didn't need them as the house cooled off overnight. The grill was wonderful to have. You are within walking distance of everything in Cold Spring - the train station, the playground, Foodtown, all the restaurants, hiking, the trolley to Boscobel. The only negative was that there is no indoor table for people to eat at. I knew this in advance, so it wasn't a problem. And, there is a table outside in the garden where you can eat. It was very nice to eat in the garden.
My wife, three year old and myself stayed here for New Year's Eve and for two nights after that. The experience was wonderful and Cristi was accommodating in advance and after our trip. The kitchen is well stocked and the beds are excellent. As other reviewers have pointed out, you can walk everywhere--try the carrot cake at Hudson Hil's. I look forward to coming back. Thanks, Cristi, for letting us stay in your great place!
So, I can't really improve on the previous reviews re; location: this place is perfect. 2 blox from the main street with shops/restaurants etc and a dedicated parking spot right in front. It doesn't get much better. In terms of space, it was perfect for two people. It would have been a bit cramped but really not bad for four people; there are two bedrooms but only one bath, and it is 'petite' after all. That said, if you're there with friends, you'll have a great time. When we arrived, the place was clean, well appointed; really, really nice.
I wouldn't put too much stock in the "stocked kitchen so you can eat in" bit. Unless you're gonna fix something really simple and eat it sitting on the couch, it's not gonna work. Just go to Main street and eat at a restaurant. Food'll be better and you're on vacation anyway, right? :-)
The bed in the master is a queen, but the mattress is prolly past end-of-life. Big depression in the middle made sleeping on my side uncomfortable
My biggest complaint is that the house gets hot, and there's really no way around it. When my GF and I got there at about 9PM after a warm-but-not-hot day, it was undeniably hot inside. There are two window AC units; one in the master and one in the living room. They are small and loud, and we had to run them pretty much the whole time to remain comfortable. Fortunately it was just us, so there was no one in the 2nd bedroom; the 2nd BR has no AC at all, and it would not have been pleasant for them at all.
So to sum it up, this is an awesome place and we had a great time. I very likely *would* stay here again. That said, for $220/night, you kinda expect a lot, and a broken-down mattress and the constant roar of overtaxed AC units was a little disappointing.
Whether it be nature you crave by the river or in the mountains, a shopping and culinary retreat or some night life and carefree fun, Cold Spring has everything to offer for the perfect social or reclusive retreat. There are historic sites, modern museums a train stop away, desirable hiking trails and a very active live music scene. Escape to the village where small town vibes are alive and well.
