Porta Romana marks the southernmost border of the historic center of Florence and also of its lively district of “Oltrarno”. Once, the city of Florence was completely surrounded by defensive walls, and the most important entrance was through the majestic stone archways of Porta Romana, from which departed the Roman “Via Cassia”, the road that led to Siena and Rome.
The district of “Oltrarno” (literally “beyond the Arno”) is the part of the historic center of Florence that lays south of the Arno river. Among the inhabitants of Florence it is considered, and often referred to, as the “true Florence”, due to the fact that this district was left untouched by the controversial heavy demolition and reconstruction works that took place in the years 1865-1895. This profoundly reshaped the historic center, not without later criticism. Also, while the rest of the Old Town changed dramatically its social, business and craftsmanship composition (especially after the end of World War II) this almost didn't happen in the district of Oltrarno. Therefore, a walk through those narrow streets and alleys between Porta Romana, Palazzo Pitti, Santo Spirito and the Old Bridge, will give the visitor an unconventional and more genuine perception of the true historic identity of Florence.
Today's Porta Romana is a pleasant low-density part of the city, with lots of green space and many typical small shops, at the southern border of the Historic City Centre. Our apartment is located in a secondary street a few steps away from Piazzale di Porta Romana. Within walking distance you can find the entrance to Boboli Gardens, and a bit farther on, Palazzo Pitti, Santo Spirito, the Ponte Vecchio and the rest of the Old Town.
Nearby are two parks, the Boboli Gardens and the former Royal Stables - now an art school. From Porta Romana begins what is probably the most stunning walk of Florence, following the path that goes up through the wide and shady bends of the tree-lined Viale Machiavelli and Viale Galileo to reach the church of San Miniato al Monte and Piazzale Michelangelo.
A supermarket can be found in Via Romana, about 300 meters away. In addition to that, each day at Porta Romana a street market is held where you can buy fresh fruits and vegetables. At the beginning of Via Senese you can find an excellent butcher shop, a fish shop, a wine shop, an excellent pastry shop and a hairdresser.
As for the public means of transport, at Porta Romana you can find a taxi park, a bus stop that serves local transport and also regional public transport to reach various locations in the Chianti region and also Siena. Other local bus stops are located in Viale del Poggio Imperiale and Piazza della Calza.
The apartment is about 70 square meters, so divided:
2. Double bedroom
3. Living room (can be used as a second double bedroom)
4. Wardrobe / Storage room
6. Kitchen with dining area + balcony overlooking the Bellosguardo hill.
The apartment is very bright, and is located on the 3rd floor (with no elevator). We have internet available (wifi - broadband access (20 Megabit) and DTTV.
Regarding the laundry facilities, in our apartment you will find a washing machine, a drying rack, an ironing board and an electric iron. For more complex tasks, there are two professional dry-cleaners in the range of 200 meters from the condo (one in Via Senese and one in Piazzale di Porta Romana).
Our kitchen is fully appointed, with all the necessary glassware, cutlery and flatware, gas stove, electric oven, fridge with freezer, microwave oven, coffeemaker and dishwasher.

I stayed in the apartment for the month of June - from my first to last interaction with Tommaso it was fabulous - he was exceptionally responsive and helpful to all my questions. The apartment was just what I was looking for
The apartment itself exceeded my expectations - it is very large, very light and so easy to live in. There was a large storage room that had shelves & hanging space. The rooms are all a great size, and sitting out on the balcony watching the sunset was just a lovely way to end the day. Through out my stay I had a few questions these were immediately attended too.
The apartment is a little walk to the ponte vecchio which means it is much quieter and less busy which I just loved - yet you are still close to everything. There are also buses if you don't feel like the walk (but not necessary), & the bus to the station takes about 10mins.
It is on the 3rd floor so there are stairs - I had a lot of luggage (but Mrs Maria - the manager kindly helped me up with them) - it was worth the stairs though as you have such a lovely outlook on both sides of the apartment.
The sofa bed is very big also if you need to use it
Overall I would definitely recommend this apartment & would look to stay there again if I went back to Florence.
Thank you Tommaso for making my stay so easy & enjoyable
This is a fabulous apartment that made for a great home base while in Florence! I stayed here for a month from mid-April to mid-May in Spring 2016 while on research leave. It is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of center city, yet close enough to walk anywhere in the city. I did not rent a car and managed to make it around the city just fine from the apartment. The apartment gives great access to groceries, restaurants, local shops and markets; and the nearby taxi stand is a bonus. Tommaso was a gracious and communicative host; he responded quickly (almost immediately!) via email to any needs or concerns, and his wonderful property manager (Mrs. Maria) and her team are right across the street. The weekly cleaning and linen change service was spectacular and a great amenity for my long term stay. Additionally, the added touches such as the welcome basket and bottle of wine waiting upon arrival made the apartment feel like home. The apartment is clean, uncluttered, has great lighting, a stocked kitchen for cooks, and a nice library for the casual reader. The building is very quiet overall. This was my first visit to Florence, and the apartment was the optimal location for my time in the area. I would return and stay here again without hesitation.
The apartment is lovely and airy as well
As rather quiet. It's nice to get away from the mobs of tourists. It's near a terrific gelato store and close to several great little
The owner is a pleasure to deal with and the housekeeper is marvelous.
I would stay there again without any hesitation
Maria was a great hostess.
The condo was so convenient to everything we wanted to see and do in Florence and the surrounding area. Many sites were within walking distance, close to bus stops and fantastic restaurants we available within a couple minutes walk. Our welcome with flowers, wine and fruit was warm and touching. The condo was clean and well equipped. We loved our little balcony and the size and accommodations was perfecto! We had my husband and I, our adult son and his friend from college stay with us. Never felt crowded as the layout was very nice of the condo. All emails with the owner was directly answered and detailed. Check in was a bit difficult as we did not have European service on our phone and to reach the property manager was a bit difficult. Once we checked it, everything worked supremely. If we ever travel to Florence again, we would definitely check for availability at this condo!
The property is wonderfully located and equipped with a balcony that's a Suntrap in the afternoon. You are only 15-20 mins from the historic centre . A bottle of wine and a large fruit bowl were there as a welcome. The arrangements with the property manager went without a hitch even though we arrived very late. I will definitely use this site again. The area around the apartment has a selection of bars and cafes but I would recommend the Trattoria Boboli very highly, excellent food, helpful staff and reasonable prices.
