About the property

2 Br, 2 Bath, sleeps 4+, with sunrise views over Broad River marsh

Great central location for exploring or birding the SC Lowcountry: easy access to National Wildlife Refuges, ACE Basin, and golf courses; approximately a half-hour from Bluffton, Hilton Head, Beaufort, and Parris Island; 45 minutes from Savannah, just a hop-and-skip from I-95.

Broadview Cottage nestles in a unique community just 5 miles off I-95 (SC exit 28, Coosawhatchie). Palm Key is a quiet, casual gathering of cottages which invites the visitor to enjoy the lovely peace of the woods, pond, and Broad River marshes. Our cottage offers visitors the opportunity to escape into nature, to leave the bustling world behind--while being conveniently located for visits to nearby beaches, golf courses, and shopping in Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Savannah.

Entertainment nearby or on site:

* Take day trips to nearby travel destinations: Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, Hunting Island, Parris Island, the Penn Center, Savannah, and more (you’ll find brochures at the cottage, or, on I-95, stop at the SC Welcome Center or Exit 33’s Frampton Plantation Visitor’s Center for information)

* Golf at Hilton Head and other courses

* Kayak the nearby Broad River or any of the other local lovely salt creeks and black water rivers (by special arrangement, kayaks, paddles, and life vests may be available, depending on height of the tide during your visit)

* Fish in the pond or at the nearby pier

* Wander along the marsh and in Palm Key’s Mystical Park with oyster-shell labyrinth

* Bird along the marsh and nearby marsh islands—this area has around 250 species to be seen, depending on time of year—for example, painted buntings, pine warblers, wood storks, eagles, osprey, egrets, pelicans, and screech owls.

* Bring your camera and enjoy the outdoors

Broadview Cottage was designed to encourage visitors to look out—a wide expanse of windows in each room gives onto marsh views, with live oaks covered in Spanish moss, to the sun rising over the Broad River, to wood storks soaring.

Our wide porch invites you to relax with a book in the swing or chat with friends over drinks. Inside, the open floor plan encourages conversation, relaxation, and visiting.

About April Childress

April and Jody are educators and nature-lovers, pet-lovers, kayakers, travelers, neophyte birders, gardeners, caregivers, and husband and wife. In the mountains where we live full time, we generate our own power with solar panels and live off-the-grid, enjoy bluegrass music, art classes, and living in the woods. Our cat Jasper, whom we found on a rainy, cold day at a boat landing in the Lowcountry, loves traveling and road trips. He often visits Broadview with us.

We first came to Palm Key in 2004 to teach a workshop for Jasper County middle school teachers that was being held on site--and before we left that weekend, we knew we had to come back! We fell in love with the lowcountry, the marsh, and this community, which was founded to offer folks the opportunity to breathe fresh air, explore nature, create, learn, teach, and grow. Palm Key began to be a regular getaway for us, and we began learn about lowcountry marshes, blackwater swamps, and the rich history of the area. We’ve been charmed by the people we’ve met, the little towns we’ve visited, and the connections to the past, back to the early 1700's in some places. The more we learned and saw, the more we wanted to explore and know!

April Childress purchased this cottage in 2012

Why April Childress chose South Carolina

Then, in 2012, we had the opportunity to purchase our cottage and make ourselves and our families a second home here. Its location is delightful--we named the cottage Broadview because it overlooks the marshes of the Broad River, and the view itself is wide and open from our porch. We can sit in the swing with a cup of coffee and just enjoy the view. While the house is modest in size and outward appearance, it lent itself to making a comfortable home for us and our extended family. We've nested in it with family antiques and neat finds from local shops that reflect our interests.

We appreciate the open floor plan and the fact that the house is handicap-able and all on one level. That way we can enjoy it for many years to come. And we can see the marsh from everywhere in the house--we have views of the Broad River from our kitchen, dining area, living area, bedrooms, and porch. Lucy is quite at home here and frequently joins us when we come to stay a while.

We come here intermittently, just to hang out sometimes, or to work as kayak instructors for LifeTides Institute, a non-profit on site that hosts programs for the international educational organization Road Scholar. If you’re interested in learning about them, we teach Kayak the Lowcountry (#12440) and Kayak More of the Lowcountry (#21344), which you can find at roadscholar.org. Palm Key is the perfect place to host a group of folks interested in adventure, nature, and history, and we've met a lot of great people who have returned again and again!

What makes this cottage unique

The neighborhood is quiet, and welcoming, and lovely--folks here are used to seeing visitors and making them feel at home. Pets on leashes are welcomed by all. We enjoy the fact that there's no light pollution, so we see constellations and moonrises over the marsh. This sight alone is rare to city-dwellers!

It makes us happy to share our cottage. We've furnished it in an authentic way--it's not 'beachy-themed,' or 'vacation-property' feeling. It's got enough reading lights to see by, and really comfortable chairs that are a dream to sit in and pretty to look at. You can put your feet up and stay a while!

And we'd like to share it with you! We’ve hosted bridge-players, birders, families who are celebrating weddings, anniversaries, or graduation at Parris Island, honeymooners, caregivers, kayakers, veterans, all sorts of folks with all sorts of interests.

Here’s hoping that you can find what you’re looking for in your visit with us at Broadview Cottage, whether it be peace and quiet or a jumping-off place for lots of exploration.

Located at the headwaters of the Broad River, Knowles Island (formerly Deloss) is the largest island of the area's chain of salt marsh islands. Cottages offer visitors the opportunity to escape into nature, to leave the bustling world behind.

The roads in our community are quiet, draped in Spanish moss, and mostly used by folks walking dogs or riding their bikes. You can take your fishing pole down to the pond and spend an afternoon, or walk bedside the marsh with your binoculars or spotting scope. Look for tiny land crabs in the leaf litter or fiddler crabs in the pluff mud. If you brought your camera, go explore the nature trail, or check out the reflections in the pond. Look for egrets and wood storks over the marsh.

When you are ready to go places, it’s easy. Just hop in the car and go. Our glass-topped coffee-table is our concierge, full of information and brochures about local events and cool, interesting places to go.

* Golf at Hilton Head and other courses.

* Kayak the nearby Broad River or any of the other local lovely salt creeks and black water rivers (by special arrangement, kayaks, paddles, and life vests are available)

* Bird along the marsh and nearby marsh islands—this area has around 250 species to be seen, depending on time of year—Painted Buntings, the endangered Wood Stork, Eagles, Osprey, Egrets, Owls, and more.

* Fish at the nearby pier, on the trestle road about a mile and a half away. Or take our cast-net out and try for shrimp. Or get together a few chicken necks and try for local blue crabs!

* Walk on site--there are nature trails and road around the freshwater pond, and a short drive or bike ride away, there’s the “trestle road,” a former railroad bed (now just gravel) that juts out across the marsh and ends at the Broad River.

* Fish on site at our pond.

* Wander along the marsh and in Palm Key’s Mystical Park with oyster-shell labyrinth.

* Stargaze on the dark nights (there is no light pollution at Palm Key).

* Enjoy assorted games for ages ranging from 4-94: Backgammon, Battleship, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, Clue, Scattergories, Scrabble, Sequence, Clue, Cranium, and more.

* Read from the owners’ library of fiction and non-fiction—some best-sellers, some mysteries, some adventures, some golf, some classics, some reference, some natural history, some Southern and SC.

* Keep up with your favorite teams and shows on our satellite TV.

* Sit on the porch swing and thinking of nothing but how rested and relaxed you feel!

Broadview Cottage’s location gives you a great opportunity to explore the lowcountry widely or close-up. Visit local attractions and small towns during the day, but come back to our retreat in the evenings. Palm Key was founded for folks who wanted a retreat, who want time to reflect, to create, to relax, remember, and enjoy what’s good about life.

Come see for yourself!

Wonderful place to stay especially with your furry friend! Hosts are also so helpful!!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I had a quick but great stay at the cottage. We had 2 little boys and a puppy so trying to find an accommodating place for our family and furry family was very important ,and April's cottage was the answer. She also gave us great information on places to visit and the best beaches to have our little pup joins us for our beach days! Would definitely visit again and hopefully for a longer period.

All you could ask for and then some

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful stay at Broadview. By far the most welcoming rental we've utilized. Took us a second to find it as the numbers on the cottage were different from what we had but April's directions were spot on. A wonderfully appointed 'home' is what this is. Very welcoming living space with nice sized bedrooms as well as bathrooms. It's literally two master suites. April checked in via email to make sure everything was going well, which was very thoughtful. The cottage was spotless and the AC was awesome as it was uppers 90's all week. It was a great place for us to retreat to each evening after spending each day in various tourist locations. As you may have read in other posts, the wifi is a bit slow but functional if you're patient lol. I could go on and on but I would run out of space. We were sad to leave and will definitely look for this cottage on future trips to the low country.

Over the top

  • 5 of 5

WE thoroughly enjoyed our stay in July- howbeit HOT. (The air worked great!) April went above and beyond to stay in touch quickly. The cottage was stocked with everything including some food and beverage, new fishing poles- doggie stuff. The layout was great for 2 baths and beds. It was very quiet. We would definitely return!
