Syros is a wonderful blend of Greek and neoclassical architecture and tradition. Syros is the capital of the Cyclades named after the circle the Cycladic islands make around the sacred island of Delos. Delos is a day's ferry ride away and is well worth a visit, along with the neighboring islands of Mykonos. Santorini and Rhodes are also reached by ferry from Syros and are well worth a visit during your trip.

Syros is rapidly becoming popular with tourists who appreciate its true Greek nature and diverse geography. Syros can be rocky and dry, similar to nearby Mykonos, which makes the sparkling blue aegean pop even more. Depending on the season, the hillsides can also be green with herbs, purple with flowering wild thyme, or yellow with flowering helichrysum. It is a favorite with wildcrafters and bees!

Villa Abela is where the American College of Healthcare Science study abroad Holistic Nutrition and Holistic Wellness Lifestyle classes are offered each year. Distillation of essential oils and aromatherapy is also offered and taught by renowned experts Dorene Petersen and Robert Seidel. Visit the College website for more information.

About Dorene Petersen

I first came to Syros in 2001 and instantly fell in love. We settled on Syros as it offers the best of both worlds - the classic beach feeling and community along with all the amenities of a decent sized Island and town. Abela villa is centrally located on the south coast and surrounded to the north and south with the most places to see and do nearby. If you are considering Mykonos or Tinos, consider Syros instead. Syros lets you capture a little bit of serenity now in the midst of our busy lives!!! Our vacation rental home is ideal for getaways, family vacations, and retreats. The villa is immaculate and completely furnished for your stay in the Greek Islands. All amenities are provided - bedding, linens, towels, dishes, cookware, and more so you can plan to stay for a while. We hope you will relax, enjoy your time here and find your own serenity!

Why Dorene Petersen chose Siros Ermoupoli

I stumbled upon this property and instantly fell in love. Miles of marble terraces and a short stroll to a beautiful swimming beach. Abela bay is tucked away so most tourists pass on by not realizing that this gem is tucked down a village lane. Its quiet but there's a lovely taverna right on the beach. We'll quite often be at the beach all day!

What makes this villa unique

We offer personal service to help you get the most from your stay. All linens, tableware, etc are provided along with plenty of extras such as books, kites, balls, frisbees and more! Plus we have free WiFi. Hey, we all want to get away at the beach, but most of us need to stay a little bit connected!!! We LOVE the air conditioning in the bedrooms and the OTE TV that gives us over 80 channels many in English! Our local manager, a Finnish native who has lived on Syros many years, speaks Finnish, English, and Greek and will assist you with anything you need during your stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed at Villa Abela with our two teenage daughters, their two friends and our ten year old son. It is an amazing house with many different terraces and places to sit out side, the best being a balcony with sofa and chairs and a view to the sea below. The main living space is a huge open plan sitting room/kitchen/dining room with a beautiful picture window looking out through the treetops to the sea.

The rooms suited us fine but we could have done with another bathroom as there were seven of us sharing the only one that there is. Beds were comfortable and all rooms were air conditioned.

The kitchen is fantastically well equipped and is a pleasure to work in. We even had a dinner party for sixteen local friends on the large terrace and had no problem finding enough plates, cutlery etc. There is a fantastic built in stone barbecue, which we used to cook kebabs from the wonderful butcher in Ermoupolis, the local town.

The beach at Abela is a two minute walk away and, though small, it is one of the nicest beaches on the island with beautiful still water and decent snorkling.

We have been coming to Syros for many, many years and this was certainly a real find as a place to stay on our favourite island.

The Villa and the Apartment Studios are a rejuvenating and relaxing place to stay while you explore Syros and surroundings islands. They are typical Greek dwellings, charming but rather quirky. I discovered Syros in 2000 and was charmed by her clear blue waters, aromatic air laden with the heavenly aroma of immortelle and other wild herbs, the great local food, and the charming, friendly people. Let me know if you have any questions.

Great villa with loads of space

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Villa Abela. It's huge, yet homely with plenty of space for our family of five. The managers Arja & George were incredibly helpful & sorted out the minor problems we had immediately. The beach is small but charming and the restaurant extremely good (if a little unvarying in its menu). It is definitely worth hiring a car to visit other beaches in the area - we particularly liked Kini and Galissas. One of the things we really loved about this holiday is that although the beaches were busy, they were never over-crowded, which is pretty hard to find in August. If you're looking for great night-life, this isn't the place for you, but if you just want to kick-back, unwind, and relax - it's perfect.

Peaceful Bliss

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely fell in love with this place. It's quiet so if you're interested in the "Night Life" it's not for you. But if you want to go somewhere and totally relax it's wonderful. We enjoyed the restaurant down at the beach and the convience of it was great. You can also take the short walk up the hill to the other beach where we would eat at Fuego where we found some friendly service. The beach is a little stoney but not enough to cause any problems. The villa was well stocked with towels and everything you need in the kitchen if you want to cook. There are so many nooks outside to escape to find a quiet place to read a book. Someday I know I will look forward to going back!!!!

Stunning! Cannot wait to go back!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved Villa abela! We planned a month stay and planned to visit some other islands and use the Villa as our base, but once we got there and relaxed we never made to it any other islands!

It is so peaceful tucked away off the main strip - the beach hardly ever gets busy unlike other beaches on the Island - it is a secret spot for the "locals"! Stunning clear water and calm - perfect for the kids! We would head down there in the morning, get a spot under one of the permanent palapa umbrellas and end up staying all day!

The Villa is well appointed with four comfortable guest rooms - two upstairs and two down and a large bathroom on the bottom floor. The marble floors and AC in the bedrooms keep it wonderfully cool. The living room looks down to abela bay and has a lovely fireplace. That flows into the dining room and kitchen. All doors flow out into huge marble patios, covered in bougainvillea and leading to secret gardens with olive trees, citrus, and herbs. Its quite magical!

We loved cooking at the Villa and eating out on one of the many marble patios - don't miss the fantastic wood fired pizza oven in the main patio - sit out and look at the view and eating fresh pizza - there's nothing better! There is also a wonderful authentic Greek Taverna right on the beach so we could wander out for dinner when we couldn't be bothered cooking at the Villa.

Although you can catch the bus that goes around the island, a car is ideal to explore around syros - there are so many fascinating things to see and do on Syros. Don't miss St Stefanos - the church in the cave - either hike down or take a boat from Kini. And don't miss the markets in Ermoupolis - fantastic nougat!!! We can't wait to go back!!!

Abela Villa-we MISS YOU!

  • 5 of 5

Being Greek myself, I just had to travel back to Greece and experience my heritage, the wonderful people and that beautiful warm sea. Abela Villa was the perfect place!!! It has a wonderful courtyard and swimming pool, a very short stroll to the beach every day for a swim in the warm sea, the beautiful grounds with flowers in bloom and the island of Syros is amazing, away from the large tourist ships yet just a ferry ride away to many other wonderful Greek islands. I can't wait to go back!!!

Amazing experience!

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed at the Villa twice and I have to admit that it was a life-changing experience. After the craziness of Athens, it was a much needed escape. We pretty much had the beach to ourselves and there's a little restaurant, on the beach, for nights that you don't want to cook in.

The house is gorgeous. I wish that I could attach my own photos to this review. I didn't want to leave and thought about tossing my passport into the ocean!

I recommend that you rent a car so that you can explore the island. There are lovely stores downtown, a historical museum, the church and village at Anos Syros (old Syros), and fabulous restaurants. There's a great little restaurant, right on the water, that has amazing arugula/"rocket" salads. I don't remember the name of it but it has tables right on the water. They also make these great coffee drinks called frappes.

When you want to venture off of the island, it's very easy to catch a ferry downtown. But there is so much to see on Syros that you don't need to go anywhere else.

Syros is located in the Cyclades, in the Greek Aegean sea. Its famous neighbors include Mykonos and Delos, but is rapidly becoming popular with tourists who appreciate its neoclassical architecture, its true Greek nature and diverse geography. Syros is rocky and dry, similar to nearby Mykonos, which makes the sparkling blue Aegean pop even more. Depending on the season, the hillsides can also be green with herbs, purple with flowering wild thyme, or yellow with flowering helichrysum. It is a favorite with wildcrafters and bees! It is possible to make a day trip to Delos a UNESCO world heritage site and an open-air museum brimming with 5,000 years of history. Mykonos is also a quick ferry trip and you can return to the comfort of Villa Abela the same day.

Local Delicacies

Syros is famous for their traditional recipes with an emphasis on fish, seafood and local herbs. Specifically, in Syros, there are some unique recipes coming from different parts of Greece, since the island was inhabited by groups of people coming from numerous different islands in the 19th century.

Fennel Pie "marathopita" is one of my favorites.

Depending on when you are vacationing on Syros there are many festivals:

On June 14, the custom of “Kleidonas” takes place in Chroussa with the burning of the wreath of flowers that is handmade every year on May 1st to celebrate spring.

The Guitar Festival of Ermoupoli is held every summer, in July, and attracts guitarists from all over the world. It usually takes place in July and includes solo concerts, guitar teaching, a guitar competition for new musicians and the final concert of the festival’s guitar orchestra. For more information:

Many religious feasts are organized in different parts of the island in honor of Catholic and Orthodox saints. Feasts include eating, drinking and dancing, and they are far too many to mention. However, the feast of Virgin Mary on August 15 in Vari is amazing. The view of little boats decorated with flowers entering the bay is impressive, while visitors enjoy local dishes and local wine and listen to folk Greek music. Dancing often lasts all night long! Similar events are organized on the same date in Kini, where on August 14 takes place the custom of Fotarides with fires being lit along the beach, drinking, eating and dancing.

Vikeleia are aquatics that last three days and are organized in honor of Demetrios Vikelas, the man who proposed the revival of the Olympic Games in modern history whose birthplace was Syros. He also was the first ever president of the Olympic Committee.

Avgoustiatika Feggaria (which means “The moons of August”) is a series of nocturnal events organized in Ano Syros. Musicians of the island’s famous traditional music, “rebetiko”, are gathered in Ano Syros and play this unique sort of music in little taverns called “koutoukia” and around the streets of the village.

And last but not least, the museums and galleries of Syros organize various events each year on which visitors may be informed from the Municipality of Syros.
