SUMMER IS COOL IN THE MOUNTAINS - SEE WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT!

Brand new hot tub is here along with an expanded deck area for you to enjoy it! Please take advantage of our special. This is a new property that I have just purchased. Come on out while this introductory special is in effect. All I ask is that you provide me with some constructive feedback so we can make this property even more wonderful than it already is. If this one is booked, look at my other property on vrbo 609710.

This is an authentic log cabin that has survived the years right in the heart of Mid-town Ruidoso! Don't choose this if you want to be alone in the middle of the woods. Choose this cabin if you want the ultimate in convenience to all the shops, bars and restaurants of Mid-town Ruidoso while being able to go out your back door and play in the river and enjoy the fascinating parade of wildlife going by.

THE CABIN: I have tried to determine when this cabin was built, but have not yet been successful. When you drive up to this cabin, you can imagine how Ruidoso was in the ‘50s and ‘60s when it became known as “The Playground of the Southwest”. If these walls could talk, oh, the stories they could tell. Over the years this cabin has undergone numerous repairs and remodels and today it stands as a reminder of the past while also showing off as a gem of modern technology. The windows have been there for a while and most are stuck from all the coats of paint, but they are reflective of the period.

When you enter the cabin the living room and the kitchen greet you with lovely colors and a décor that is reminiscent of the period during which the cabin was built. There are a few modern touches, like the flat screen TV and the electric fireplace. Maybe one day I will figure out how to integrate a dishwasher in the mix, but until then please enjoy the charm of the 1950s.

The path from this area to the master bedroom is either through the kitchen or the bathroom. The floor plan is really simple. That’s how they built ‘em back then.

The bedroom is comfy and warm. The knotty pine paneling provides a authentic log cabin feel. Just relax in the comfy king bed with the retro quilt and if the temperature is right, open the window and let the sound of the Rio Ruidoso lull you to sleep.

Oh did somebody say AIR CONDITIONING? The main floor of the cabin has complete climate control provided by two window units. One in the master bedroom and one in the living room. They are capable of providing heat as well as air conditioning that will flat freeze you out of there if you want it to!

Next we go back out the front door and to the BUNK HOUSE basement which is under the north end (furthest from the street) of the house. As you enter the basement door you find the bunkhouse. The two twin beds are really comfy and the décor is right off the ranch! This recently remodeled area of the house also contains the washer / dryer. Be careful of your head if you are a tall person. This is a unique and fantastic area which will create lasting memories of adventure and independence for your children. Please understand this is not a place for children that need to be in a bedroom next to yours. This area has its own “front door” and no bathroom. In my personal opinion I think this is a great space for ages 11 and up, but you should plan on the younger children being upstairs on the fold-out.

THE PARKING: Oh this is the secret sauce. 95% of the time parking is not a problem. You can park in the public lot anytime night or day. It is just to the west of the cabin. I will put a parking pass in the form of a postcard in the cabin for you. With that you can park one vehicle in front of 221 Rio which is right next door (east side). You see most times in Ruidoso the public parking lot is not quite full, but during holidays and special events, parking is indeed at a premium, so it’s really nice to have that private parking space.

MID-TOWN: This is where the action is. Restaurants, bars, shops, it is all within a short walk of your front door. No DUI’s while staying here. You can Rock and Roll at Quarters or Country and Western dance at WPS (Win Place or Show). You can close the place down and walk home. If late night is not your thing, you have a choice of five of the best restaurants in Ruidoso within a two block walk. If you don’t like to go to restaurants, you have some of the most amazing clothes shops within two blocks. If you don’t like any of the above, then there’s always wine and desert! Yes within one block there is an amazing cupcake shop and a lovely selection of wine to taste and take home. I can go into more detail later!

THE BACKDOOR: Every coin has two sides and this is no exception. You have all the fun and excitement of Mid-town out your front door, and all the peace and quiet of nature out your back door. Yes, there is a little grey area in the middle, the rest of the tourists that are parking in the public lot can look at you in the yard relaxing – just remember that they are just jealous. We put a nice curtain on the hot tub to afford you some needed privacy! Back to Nature awaits you out the back door. We have a lovely porch with a great view of the river and plenty of comfy furniture to sit on and relax while enjoying the wonderful climate. There is also a gas grill there for your outdoor cooking pleasure. There are some wonderful new steps leading down to a new porch that is just feet from the river. I am trying to get some trout to come hang out there. We’ll see how that goes in future years. We have a great fenced yard for the kids and the dogs to run around in and play and there is a brand new hot tub to soak the soreness out of those muscles after a hard day of hiking, skiing, riding, or shopping.

We certainly hope that you will choose our little RETRO ON THE RIVER when you plan your vacation to Ruidoso. We have done what we can to make it a wonderful experience for you.

Thanks again. We hope to see you soon.

About Reed Helmly

I LOVE THE MOUNTAINS. They are a little hard to get to from Austin, Texas. Having a cabin in the mountains is a great way to get away! It is my pleasure to share this cute little gem with you.

Reed Helmly purchased this cabin in 2014

Why Reed Helmly chose Ruidoso

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION - It may not be big, but it offers a real authentic experience with all the conveniences of being in town steps away from your front door.

What makes this cabin unique

This cabin has survived the years. It has been updated quite a bit since it was built, but the décor reflects the charm of a simpler time in our history.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My family loved saying at this cabin! Check-in staff was friendly and made it easy. The cabin was very clean, cozy and comfortable. The landing by the creek behind the property is a nice place to sit and read. We had plenty of towels and it was also nice to be able to do laundry. Being walking distance to the downtown strip was convenient. We would love to stay here again!

Great cabin

  • 5 of 5

We decided to make a quick weekend trip to Ruidoso. We are so glad that we found Retro on the River. The owner was great to work with and helped us with the reservation very quickly. We knew what to expect but the cabin was in the perfect location. We were able to walk in midtown because we were basically in midtown. The aminities were great. Everything was provided for cooking. One trip to the grocery store and we were all set. We grilled all afternoon and enjoyed the beautiful cool pines. If this cabin is available...I recommend you stay there. You won't be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Thanks Carla for adding to our reviews. It's so important for our future guests to have these little unbiased glimpses into the experiences of like minded people who are looking for a place to stay. It is indeed unique. It's right in midtown, yet when you are hanging out on the deck, it feels like nature is drawing you in as you watch / listen to the river. I'm so glad that you got the experience. I'm a bit jealous that you are so close and can get there so easy. Thank you for taking wonderful care of RETRO. I hope you have many happy returns. -Reed

A Sweet Retreat in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in this cabin several times. There are multiple reasons for this. First is Location, right in the middle of Midtown. Walking distance to restaurants, all kinds of shopping, plus a couple of night-life options. Second reason we keep coming back is even though it is close to all the action, it is in such a quiet location overlooking the river. Extremely relaxing, great place to recharge. Cabin has a wonderful deck right out the door of the bedroom. We have spent many hours there, enjoying the sound of the river and just chilling. Third reason is the cabin is ALWAYS clean and neat when we arrive. Property is pet friendly, with a fenced yard that provides a great place for your four-legged friend to expend some energy.

Great location, great amenities

Great retro cabin convenient to stores

  • 5 of 5

Property was both secluded and handy to the shopping area and restaurants. My sons ages 21, 17, and 15 had room to spread out and enjoyed the freedom of being able to go walk the Main Street whenever they wanted.

Everything was clean and the 1950s retro decor added so much to the experience. My kids enjoyed watching the John Wayne and Alfred Hitchcock DVDs in addition to having Netflix.

Navigating the steps to the river wasn’t a problem even with a bad knee. The environment was beautiful and peaceful with the sound of the flowing river. The hot tub was relaxing and secluded enough that we weren’t uncomfortable using it.

There’s plenty of information about what to do in the area, and the owner is super helpful and available to answer any questions.

We would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone who wants to combine both the peacefulness of the mountain air and the convenience of shopping.

Perfect spot in Ruidoso!

  • 5 of 5

The charm of this cabin was not unnoticed by our family of 7! It was the perfect amount of room for my husband and I with our children aged 16, 13, 9, 3, and 7mos! It had space for he baby to crawl, tons of room for the kids to play, separate area/room for our teens, and a hot tub! On top of all that, we were directly behind th Main Street of adorable shops, restaurants, and bars and directly in front of a little stream that was perfect for us to watch and relax and our kids to play in! Did I mention the wildlife?! We saw a mama elk and her 3 babies walk right by the dock down by the stream! Such a wonderful weekend away! We can’t wait to stay again!

So relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Quaint & cozy; close to everything but with lots of privacy. Excellent customer service from Reed & Company. Loved the back deck and hot tub. Master bed very comfortable. Path to the river somewhat tricky as most handrails have fallen down or very shaky. Retro kitchen awesome!

Very relaxing trip, thanks Reed.
