This eco-friendly second floor apartment has all the comforts of home while striving to live in harmony with its gorgeous setting. From the native plants used for landscaping and irrigated with catch-water, to the non-allergenic cleaning practices, low-energy light fixtures, and recycling program, The Nest at Newton Cove is a perfect choice for green and eco-friendly lodging.
From the comforts of your “home away from home”, you have a bird’s eye view of Alaska’s famous Inside Passage and the towering Chilkat Mountains. In the evening you can watch the brightly lit cruise ships sail past as you enjoy the peace and quiet. A morning walk on beach, where you can gather rocks and shells in the sand and enjoy the salty crisp air and beach flowers and grasses, is a great way to start your day. Don't forget to carry your coffee with you!
On any given day you might see seals and sea lions along with several different kinds of birds dipping and diving for their food. We have placed a few reference books in the apartment so you can identify what you see, and Haines has a great library and book store to help you out. Like to fish? Well, throw out your line for one of the five species of salmon and bring one in for dinner while you watch the Orca and Humpback whales cruise by. At the boat harbor in Haines, you can buy fresh caught Dungeness crab for dinner.
Down the road approximately 6 miles is the Chilkoot River and Lake where bear viewing almost guarantees a sighting or two. You can watch the bear at the weir and keep track of the daily salmon count where Alaska Fish and Game track the migration. This is a great spot to throw in your jig and pull out more salmon. Back in The Nest, spend your evenings watching our selection of movies, reading a good book or playing one of the many board games. Enjoy the peaceful sound of the waves and incoming tide hit the rocks on the beach lulling you to sleep.
The Nest is located on Lutak Road: From the center of town at the bank follow the signs to the ferry terminal, approximately 2.4 miles, 2nd house on the left - look up for the flag pole. From the Alaska Marine Ferry Terminal, turn left onto Lutak Road, approximately 1.9 miles, on the right - look up for the flag pole.
We feel very well.
You can look over the inlet watching cruiseships, birds and whales.
The open kitchen and the living room are very cozy.
The appartement was very comfortable.
The apartment was well stocked with dishes, DVDs. The living area looked over the Lynn Canal. Everything was as described in the listing. It was clean and convenient. The owner checked in to make sure everything was all right.
Great amenities, although laundry facilities would be a welcome addition, fabulous location, clean, tidy and well equipped. The owners, John and Suzanne, couldn't have been nicer. Would definitely recommend this rental, although need a car as it's a couple of miles out of town. If more two people need to be aware that the bathroom is an en-suite to the main bedroom.
What a wonderful place to stay! Spacious and clean accommodations. Close to the water, the ferry dock and to town (Haines). A fantastic view of the canal which is great for whale watching. You will see eagles everywhere. John and Suzanne are such friendly people! I can't wait to return!
What wonderful place to stay. We were there until we got on the Ferry for our trip back to the lower states. Beautiful view, we could see the Cruise Ships and Ferry's come into Haines.
We drove farther up the road to the Chilkoot fishing area and saw huge Brown Bears eating the salmon from the river. We also went fishing across the road in the bay and caught several salmon. Suzanne and her husband were wonderful hosts.
Do be prepared to climb steps to the apartment. The internet connection was not the best but I could access it by going down into the driveway. All and all it was a great place to stay and I would recommend it to anyone.
Arrived in Haines via ferry and was met by car rental company at dock. Secured car and drove approx one mile to "The Nest" (2 bedroom loft apt over a stand alone garage adjacent to owners house). Very clean with everything needed to stay a week or more including cookware, etc. Owners were very nice and helpful with town info. Caught salmon across the street. Woke up in the mornings to eagles. Not fancy, but very nice. Quiet. Car rental a must. All reservations made through Randa went very smoothly.
