I grew up in this house alongside my 4 siblings, graduating in 1965. I was in the top ten of my high school class! [There were 9 in that class....]. I graduated from James Madison University in 1969 and taught middle school in the Eastern Shore's Accomack County for 35 years. A teacher buddy, Shirley Parks, and I gathered together popular Tangier recipes and compiled two "Tangier Island Girl" recipe books which are sold all over the island.
Patsy Young purchased this house in 2004
My father served as a bomber gunner in WWII and was shot down over Holland. He spent two years as a prisoner of war, and returned home to Tangier Island. He married my mother 3 years later. He then had an island carpenter build this house for their home around 1950.
The house is just North the beautiful beach on the south end of the island. It overlooks the western side of the Chesapeake Bay and the southern end of the airport. One can find places on the island to crab or fish. The house is diagonally opposite from the town center and thus is a little quieter than most locations.
We enjoyed a wonderful, long weekend getaway with our family of 4 and my Mother-in-law. The house was well kept and very spacious and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and there are plenty of DVD's and books to enjoy. The swing out front is fun to sit and relax in. It is located close to the beach which was convenient. As it is on the opposite side of town from where the cruise boat comes in, reserving and renting a golf cart is an enjoyable must and the only way to get around. We also enjoyed a wonderful interactive crab boat tour by Denny Crockett that we would recommend. The people of Tangier Island are very friendly with a wonderful way of life and history to share. The owner of the home, Patsy Young was very friendly and very attentive to our needs and questions and we would definitely recommend this home for your vacation.
