my name is Ilana, I've lived in Jerusalem all my life ,got married and raise my children in this powerful beautiful city. We live in Ein karen , Jerusalem , and we love to travel and enjoy the beauty of Israel.
Ilana ben shoshan purchased this apartment in 2012
we got this property because we love the surrounding and the beautiful sites around. we imagine if we were tourists in Israel we would love to stay in this apartment.
The apartment it self is well designed and gives a warm feeling as if you are at home, we really wanted to give it a personal touch. :)
First off, I was on a family trip, with my wife and three children (5,11, & 13) We toured the country north to south, but Jerusalem was our first stop, and we stayed five days.
Ilana and Michael are wonderful hosts. They were caring and attentive. If you need anything, they are there. In fact, they will be there before you need anything, just to check. There was a minor issue with the rental fee, and it was settled without a hitch.
The apartment itself was just the right size for all of us, though if our five year old was older we might need one more spot. But for us it was perfect. The bathroom is small, but for us it worked well. The water was always hot and the pressure was good. The bathroom has a small washer/dryer that worked well. The kitchen was perfect.
The location is marvelous. On the corner of G. Washington and Keren Hayesod, just around the block from the YMCA and King David, just down the block from the Great Synagogue, and maybe a ten minute walk from Ben Yehuda. In the other direction, Independence Park and the adjacent Old Train Station are close and absolutely wonderful for anyone and especially if you have kids. The German Colony is another few minutes. One night we walked to the Old City for the Light Show. That took about 20 minutes or so on foot, passing the Begin Museum and Cinematique and then up the hill to Jaffa Gate. That was a wonderful walk. There is a cafe and small market basically right down stairs.
Highly recommended. We will return on our next trip. Shalom!
My husband, younger son and I stayed here while visiting my older son who was located nearby. Michael and Ilana are amazing hosts. They have provided everything that you need for a very comfortable stay and are incredibly easy and pleasant to work with. My son invited a bunch of friends over for Shabbat lunch and dinner so Michael brought us a larger table and extra chairs. What really made this exceptional was that he even brought us a large white tablecloth to use for the meals - such a thoughtful gesture. The location is amazing and everything you need is there.
We stayed 11 nights and had everything we needed - comfortable bed with nice linens and large (not flat) pillows, plenty of large fluffy white towels, appliances and electronics that worked consistently, air conditioning in both the bed room and living room. Actually the weather was so pleasant, we were happy opening the windows to let in fresh air at times. We were given the wifi code and instruction manuals for the coffee machine and the clothes washer dryer at check in and the apartment was clean and sweet smelling. We had no difficulty communicating prior to arrival. If I had a question, I just used the "contact owner" on the HomeAway site over and over and although it wasn't their personal e-mail, Ilana and Michael responded promptly every time. When we finally arrived in Israel, we purchased a chip for an unlocked cell phone and were able to exchange phone numbers with Ilana and Michael which made it very easy to reach them during our stay.
I'll have to admit it was an easy walk to the Jaffa Gate but after a long day of site seeing, the walk back was always tough - it's just enough of an incline to make us senior Texas flatlanders complain. Thank goodness for an elevator that always worked.
Both the small grocery in the building and larger one a block or so away were a blessing. I had everything I needed for the light cooking I did in the kitchen with stovetop and microwave, but if you're intent on roasting something substantial you should ask ahead for some ovenware. There was one broiler pan bottom tray, but nothing else for the oven. Also a hot pad or oven mitt to protect you from burns would be wise. I'm sure Ilana and Michael would have no problems adding those items if needed.
Since rental car companies are walking distance to the apartment, my husband was able to turn in our rental car to the Mamilla Mall garage and walk back to the apartment. Then when we were ready to leave it was easy to walk to the rental car office, complete the paperwork, walk to the Mamilla Mall garage and drive off with a rental car to pick me up at the apartment with suitcases to continue our travels.
If I had no complaints, then why not 5 stars? The apartment was a bit isolating - I wish there had been some patio table, garden seating, or balcony. Opening the windows helped but you felt a bit closed in. I'd highly recommend the apartment. I doubt you can find a better one without paying in a much higher bracket.
We stayed 11 nights and were glad we had found a safe haven there. Communication prior to our visit was no problem, I just kept using the "contact the owner" through HomeAway and I always got a prompt reply. Once we had an Israeli cell phone, we exchanged numbers with Michael and Ilana and found easy contact. Wifi code was provided at check-in as well as instruction manuals for the espresso machine and clothes washer/dryer. The food markets being so close were a blessing. and the walk to Jaffa gate was not difficult. Now, walking home when you've exhausted yourself during the day is a different story for some flat landers like us from Texas. We were certainly grateful that the elevator was there.
Towels were thick and fluffy, bed linens nice with 4 soft bed pillows. Air conditioning with separate units for bedroom and living room kept the apartment comfortable, but the weather was not particularly hot yet (remember we're from Texas) so opening the windows to bring in a nice breeze was delightful. TV provided us with some English channels and actually everything we needed worked consistently.
I should add that if you are determined to seriously cook for yourself, you might want to ask Michael and Ilana for ovenware and a hot pad so you won't get burned. There was one oven tray, but that's all for the oven. I really only needed stove top and microwave, but if you plan to roast something substantial, you might want to ask for some additional cookware.
The pictures on this site represent the apartment well. It was clean and sweet smelling on arrival. I'd certainly recommend this apartment. So why not 5 stars? Guess we wish there had been a patio/garden/rooftop or balcony where we could sit outside. It was a little isolating, but quiet in a noisy city can be a blessing too.
After spending 7 days in Jerusalem, my family of 4 has raved about this particular VRBO! We loved the location and space. My mother is disabled and this apartment was perfect for her. An elevator was available to gain easy access from the street.
We were thankful for dishes, pots, pans and kitchen items, especially because of Passover and Sabbath. A little grocery store was located just around the corner from the apartment, which helped with breakfast and dinner items. The apartment was furnished well and sheets, pillows, blankets and towels were adequately provided.
We believed a couple of items were missing. Namely, the access codes to Wi-Fi, how to run the TV, and how the hot water heater switches worked. We had to call Ilana and Michael to receive such information.
We also believed it was hard to get in contact with Ilana and Michael leading up to the trip. We were only provided with telephone numbers and not an email address for contact. We hope in the future, they will provide personal email for fast and easy communication with them.
We so loved staying in their apartment and would go back and stay again! We loved their hospitality and cleanliness of their apartment!
We've just come back from Jerusalem after a week's stay. We liked the apartment of Ilana and Michel VERY MUCH. It is very cleverly planned and was big enough for us (we were 5 with a small child).
We travel a lot and have different experience with apartments, sometimes in most posh places there isn't an extra bed-side lamp or no shelf in the bathroom and the knives are blunt and fryng-pans scratched…
Here there was everything we could possibly think of. Whenever you feel like putting a book on the table - there it is - a small table or a shelf. Need more light? Just switch it on. The living-room is so light, that it is even possible to read without extra bed-side lamps there. And many windows provide lot's of daylight. The big bed is comfortable and there are enough blankets, sheets and pillows for different tastes.
We never felt lack of space for any of us. There were enough chairs, and an armchair - our favourite one. At the same time the furniture doesn't take much room and the flat still seems spacious – even with place to run and play for the kid.
The kitchen is perfectly equipped, even towels, washing liquids and basic food was there for us. It was especially kind since we arrived on the Sabbath night. There are enough plates, pots and cutlery – all clean, nice and new.
Dear Ilana and Michael, you are doing your best and you are wonderful hosts! Thank you!
There is also a small but adequate supermarket downstairs, and another (also not very big, but allegedly the best in the area) in a 5 - minute walk. It took us 15 minutes without a rush to Jaffa Gate. We found the location perfect and the area safe.
The apartment is located in the center of Jerusalem. you can enjoy everything the city offers by walking distance. you can see the beauty of the old city, the wall, historical sites and colorful markets. also you can enjoy the night life, bars and restaurants, and art galleries- all in walking distance!
