About Mary Bassingthwaighte

Above you can see Kira, my youngest now 22 years old, sitting on the porch stairs of our original cabin. We were so lucky to come across this gem back in the early 90s. During one of our many family visits up into the Glacier National Park area, we were driving down the North Fork Road and saw a small 'for Sale' sign next to the road. We couldn't believe that someone would be selling a plot of land so close to this pristine land! We whipped our car around so fast and met with a wonderful couple who had raised their family on that property for many many years. It was simple decision. For the next twenty years, my children, Kira, Ian and Tris spent many glorious days hiking, fishing, rafting, climbing, and playing in the snow (Glacier snow + three kiddos = ridiculously impressive snow forts). Our addition onto the original cabin was meant to be a place where they could all return with their families one day. Eventually the idea came about to share the property with other people who would love the quiet and splendor that this wonderful valley offers.

Mary Bassingthwaighte purchased this cabin in 1994

Why Mary Bassingthwaighte chose Polebridge

Numa Peak has the advantage of privacy and quiet but also with close proximity to both Glacier National Park and the township of Polebridge. The convenience to food, music and diverse company often from all over the world with the ability to return quickly home to a quiet haven is just too good to be true. It is difficult to describe the beauty, the smell...just the feel of being in the middle of nature at its best

What makes this cabin unique

The Numa Peak property continues to surprise us all year long with its extreme range of beauty. The summers are warm and dry filled with beautiful plants, grasses, and roaming wildlife. The winters are fierce and majestic, with pine trees becoming snow ghosts and a few lonesome footprints in the snow, a grand feeling of seclusion sets in. It doesn't matter what time of year, this place becomes an escape for our family, a place to unwind and remind ourselves of how simple and beautiful life can truly be. It would be selfish to keep this gem hidden from others so we invite you to stay and experience it all for yourself, be it adventure or a eve for stargazing.

Numa Peak has four cabins and all are handcrafted by local builders with many of the logs coming from the property itself. Ptarmigan is one of three located on the north side of the property. Please note that we are literally off the grid and power is provided by 2 large solar panels, an inverter and battery system with backup generator, and propane. We are trying to be as sustainable as possible, using the sun, wood from the Numa Peak property, energy efficient equipment, and providing jobs to the North Fork locals!

Beautiful home, quiet and picturesque

  • 5 of 5

Wonderfully modern home in a rustic atmosphere. Fantastic updated bathroom, beautiful tub, hot showers. Fantastic view. We had a wonderful week relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet. The Polebridge mercantile had fantastic bakery products as promised. About 20-25 min from Apgar village in Glacier National Park. Definitely buy groceries in Columbia Falls prior to heading to the house. We grilled several nights with the propane grill on the deck. No microwave, but it didn’t matter for us. We were able to use the satellite internet to call home on WhatsApp to talk to our son. I was a super nervous momma being away from our son for the week, but I was given the main house landline number to give to my in laws in case of emergencies. Good to note that I wasn’t able to find the pay phone I saw other posts talk about, the mercantile didn’t have one, so the nearest might be Columbia Falls or Glacier? We didn’t end up needing it because the internet worked for us. It was spotty and only worked in the kitchen, but our calls were short and just for check in so it didn’t matter. Overall a fantastic stay and a fantistic home. We will definitely be back!

Beautiful cabin with great views

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 stayed at Mary's cabin for four nights during our stay at Glacier. We thoroughly enjoyed the cabin - had everything we needed. The cabin is a bit remote - but we like it that way. It was a great place to come home to after a long day exploring and hiking in Glacier. Just know you are off the grid - sketchy internet, no hair dryers and hot water for 4 consecutive showers was an issue - but we staged our showers so it worked out fine. We enjoyed cooking our meals, bbq-ing on the grill and eating on the deck to enjoy the beautiful surrounding mountains. Thanks for a wonderful stay!

Like Glamping on steroids!

  • 5 of 5

What a way to introduce my wife (not a big camper) and kids to this fabulous area. I came back after 20 years and it was their first time to Polebridge and Glacier. Finding such awesome accommodations in this "of the grid" area made for an awesome trip. I purposely downplayed the cabin to my wife and told her its a "small place in woods, no cell service, just solar power, etc." to lead her to think we would be at least kind of roughing it. What a pleasant surprise for her, she was in awe of the beautiful cabin, kitchen, bedrooms and views. So convenient to Bowman and Kintla lakes. Great price for such an awesome and unique place IMHO. Already making plans for next year.

Glacier National Park cabin near Polebridge

  • 5 of 5

Numa Peak's Ptarmigan cabin is a beautifully appointed, extremely comfortable two-bedroom residence near the northwest corner of Glacier National Park. (There are two other cabins that flank Ptarmigan.) As advertised, the view of the Northern Rockies is indeed stunning. The proprietors were extremely cordial, and a full kitchen is available for those inclined to prepare their own meals. Numa Peak is only a mile or so distant from the tiny burg of Polebridge, which provides access to the most remote part of the park (Bowman and Kintla lakes, a short, gorgeous hike to Hidden Meadow), and it's only a half-hour from the West Glacier entrance and the Going-to-the-Sun Road. For those like us who prefer not to cook on vacation, the Polebridge Mercantile features fabulous baked goods (both sweet and savory) for morning or afternoon, and the Northern Lights Saloon & Cafe -- next door to the Mercantile -- is a fine choice for evening meals and drinks. Another nearby option for dining and imbibing is Home Ranch Bottoms (about 4 miles south on the North Fork Road from Numa Peak), which is known for its tasty barbecue and huck ice cream and shakes. The North Fork Road is technically unpaved for most of the drive to Numa Peak, but if you take the park's paved Camas Road to the North Fork Road and turn right, it's only 15 miles to the cabin, and the road was in extraordinarily good shape, both smoothly graded and nearly dust-free. (If you take the North Fork from Columbia Falls, however, you'll have a more traditionally dusty and rocky drive until you reach the Camas Road intersection.) In short, highly recommended.

Our stay was wonderful. The view is great and the cabin was clean, comfortable and well done. The cabin's location near two of the Park's lakes Bowman and Kintla was perfect for our plans to paddle. We saw wildlife and enjoyed walking around the grounds. Very peaceful, quiet. The cabin had everything - hot shower, nice kitchen, outside grill, and great beds. So glad we chose this rental rather than stay in one of the towns or the Park Lodges which were busy with people. Mary's onsite manager Sam was a great host and source of information. I very much want to return and stay again!

Living large off the grid!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic stay. This is a beautiful cabin in an ideal location. A short drive or long walk to the famous Polebrige Mercantile for fresh baked goods every morning. Stunning views of the park in a very well appointed cabin. Everything was very high end. Sam the caretaker is great! Very diligent about making sure we were settled in and comfortable. The cabin was so clean and well maintained it looked like it was brand new. This is where we take our friends from out of state when we want to give them the most unique and high quality Montana experience we can.

Numa Peak is nestled in a small strip of private land between the Whitefish National Forest and Glacier National Park. It is considered the most remote valley remaining in the continental USA. It is home to an abundance of wildlife including Grizzly and Black Bears, Mountain lions, Moose, Elk, Wolves, Deer, and Big Horn Sheep. All the activities available in Glacier National Park are just a step away. In addition to the hiking, backpacking, fly fishing, wildlife, canoeing, rafting, biking, photography, etc... Numa Peak is in close proximity to golf, tennis, horseback riding and more. As Numa Peak is 35 miles up the North Fork Road from major civilization, when the sun disappears, so does the light! The result is a superb panorama of stars you may have never seen. Stargazing is a must!
