History of 'The Hudson Valley': It is one of the most historic places in the USA. The area is famous for being the first wine-producing region in the country, while bountiful farms have been here for centuries. The scenery is so remarkable it inspired the first arts movement in the U.S, the Hudson River School. These 1800's artists/naturalists-on-canvas would not be surprised to learn that 20th century residents were crusaders in saving the Hudson Valley landscape at Storm King Mountain where the Mountain where the country's environmental movement was born.
Ramble over forts from the Revolutionary War, and see where Washington lived for most of it. The area was so strategic for defense, America's first military academy, West Point, was established here in1802. 100 years later, Great Estates were built by the Vanderbilts, Roosevelts and Rockefellers.
Excursions: LOCALLY; Enjoy day trips to amazing places like West Point Military Academy, Boscobel, Shawangunk Wine Trail, Mohonk Mountain Preserve, the village of Millbrook, the village of Woodstock, the village of Rhinebeck, Thomas Cole National Historic Site, Olana- home of the famed Hudson River Art movement, the Rockefeller and Vanderbilt estates, the Culinary Institute of America and….
IF you want to explore further into New York City, take a 90 minute train ride along the Hudson, into Grand Central Station or drive in, see a Broadway play, visit the many famous Art, and History Museums, or shop to your heart's desire.
Have dinner or snack at the Grand Central station, (which feels like is a small city within NYC.) and then take the train home.
It's all here..
My husband and I are both artists who lived and worked in the creative fields in Manhattan for thirty years.
We grew up in Rhode Island where the ocean is never far away so; when we stumbled upon Milton and the Hudson Valley; we were mesmerized by the river views, the country landscape, and surrounding homes. We dropped everything and moved here.
The best part is that we did not have to give up all that New York City has to offer as it is a 1 1/2 drive or train ride on Metro North or Amtrak.
Because it is like nothing we have ever seen!
Be it in winter, spring, summer or Fall-- magnificent sunrises; the colors the moon casts over the river…and anticipating what beauty the next day brings: birds,(especially now that the 'eagles' are back) wildlife, boats and barges along the river: Even rain brings the most unusual rainbows!
five high school classmates decided to stay in this lovely home on the Hudson River. there was plenty of room in the house for privacy, for conversations, and enough bathrooms for 5 women of us. the deck is the greatest place to be in the morning with a hot cup of coffee and the side porch was a lovely place to journal and discuss the day ahead. Since we like to day trip, the house was central to so many places to visit. You could go up one side of the Hudson and down the other side in two days just stopping at quaint little towns. the house was very clean and had you needed to cook and have a great time. when we couldn't find something or needed a little help the owner was just a text message away! And we appreciated that since we had a couple questions. Rent this house and you will not be disappointed and you will have so much fun in the Hudson River Valley.
Perfect getaway home for the weekend. Beautiful home and beautiful views. Extremely accommodating and helpful hosts. We had a great time
First off .. Mary Ellen is the ultimate landlord. You can't ask for a better person to help make the rental easy. Thank you. My son got married at Buttermilk Falls and we need more room for guest. My sister in law stayed and loved the house. The house was in spectacular shape and clean. You are a quick walk to Buttermilk Falls Spa and Henry's Restaurant. Also in town of Marlboro is a great spot the Raccoon Saloon. You can at a vineyard in 15 mins as well.
This is on our list.. we will be back for another week/weekend soon.
Thanks for everything ... Tim & Trish
You never know what you are actually going to get when you see the pictures and read the reviews so you hope for the best. Well, we got the best when we pulled up. It was exactly as we were told, the information that Mary Ellen provided was how it really worked; the house was IMMACULATE (my husband said not even dust in the corners! cleanest we have ever seen), the rooms were all well appointed (side tables, area rugs to cover the exquisite wood floors, lamps, bureaus), the fridge contained coffee and starters, condiments were plenty. The internet was excellent, the tv had basic cable, the washer/dryer included laundry soap, the bathrooms had toiletries with a nod towards earth-friendly.
I look for places to stay that are homey but don't feel like you are in someone's home with all of their stuff. This was it.
We came up to hike and relax. Mary Ellen has a ton of brochures for the area which was super helpful. We had dinner at Buttermilk Inn the first night and it was excellent. We rented a motorboat and went around the Hudson and got lunch. We did the Walkover Bridge loop. So much to do and then come back to serenity.
Would highly recommend this house and this owner.
With booking one day prior to arriving- we didn't expect much... Just a much needed getaway for the weekend!
But Mary's place was our wish come true. As soon as you walk in you feel at home. Perfect fully equipped kitchen, amazing porches with memorizing views of the Hudson.
Would recommend for any occasion- either a couple, family or friends- this is the place you wanna go.
We will definitely be coming back again!!!
We enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home with a great view over the Hudson. Comfortable beds, great kitchen, awesome porch and deck! House was clean, Mary Ellen was very responsive and in touch with us to be sure we had what we needed (which we did). We would recommend this property and would stay here again if in the area. A few activities we found most interesting in the area: Buddhist Monastery (Carmel), Eleanor Roosevelt's house at Val-Kill (Hyde Park), and the Hudson Walkway. We'd been to the FDR estate and CIA previously so didn't include those on this list, but recommend those as well (both in Hyde Park).
The Hudson River House and its surroundings, will inspire you to explore, be creative, unwind, simply relax, enjoy, and observe nature from your view of the River. Be it Eagles soaring over its ice in winter, to ferry boats, tug boats, sail boars, a replica pirate ship and hot air balloons passing. Wake up to spectacular summer sunrises, end each day with a different sunset and a clear moon reflected in the river. walk to Buttermilk falls, dine at Henry's restaurant there. Many farm to table restaurants, Wineries, vineyards, orchards.
