The Metro is just a 15 minute walk/5 minute bus ride. The Montgomery County Ride On bus picks up one block away and drops off right in front of the house. Although, the location is extremely convenient the house is set back away from the noise and commotion of the street. It is quiet, restful, and private.
There is a very nice laundry mat two blocks away and a natural grocery (food co-op) 3 blocks away. There are several restaurants, as well as, other retail stores, a hardware store, churches, libraries, etc. in downtown Takoma Park less than a mile away. Silver Spring is just 3 miles away with a Whole Foods, AFI theater, Filmore concert venue, and dozens of restaurants and shops.
Michael and I have lived in the D.C. area since 2002. He is employed by a non-profit organization and I work from home mostly as a volunteer. I have been a volunteer at the National Cathedral and have been a member of P.E.O. since 1994. We grew up Mississippi and have two adult children, two cats, and a dog. We enjoy our family, travel, music, and outdoor activities. We are friendly and will do whatever we can to ensure you have an enjoyable stay.
Ellen Pearson purchased this apartment in 2013
We chose Takoma Park for it's unique flavor and proximity to Washington D.C. This house is also unique. It has lots of charm and space and the double lot gives us privacy and more room for gardening.
We love the neighborhood. Takoma Park is funky and friendly. There is a real community feel. It's like living in a small town in the middle of a big city.
Living in this part of the county means we can get easily to the major airports and trains without a car if need be and we are only about 2 or 3 miles to the Beltway and I-95.
The main reason we bought this house was the convenient location to downtown D.C. to allow for an easy commute to work. My husband can ride his bike to work or take the Metro.
Equally we were attracted to the details of the property. The house is adorable with many lovely, unique features. It was build in 1936 and has beautiful wooden floors, large windows, and great views year round.
I love to sit on the front porch in the evening and watch people go by with their children and pets. Dining on the rear deck with friends and neighbors is great fun. Lilting music and the smell of dinner cooking on the neighbor's grill mixes in the summer evening adding a comforting layer to the ambiance. Fireflies dance in the dusk.
The beautiful new kitchen is fantastic with enough room to entertain or even turn up the stereo and dance. Handcrafted windows and cabinetry add old country charm.
The apartment was as advertised, clean and stocked with the 'normal stuff' I would expect at a hotel such as an iron, hair dryer, soap, shampoo, etc. Convenient 30 minute drive to all the Washington DC tourist attractions. The owner was very nice and kept us informed on check-in check-out process (this was our first VRBO rental). Nice quite downtown with good local restaurants if you want to get away from DC.
The neighborhood was nice with good food and coffee shops within walking distance. There was a great trail for running near by. The owners were so helpful and nice. The property was clean and well taken care of and had everything we needed and was advertised. Would definitely stay here again!
This apartment is nice, very clean, and has everything you might need -- it is very thoughtfully arranged. It is comfortable and in a great location. The owners are friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay!
Two of us spent four nights at this basement one bedroom apartment. It was comfortable and well equipped. The trundle/daybed in the living room was fine for sleeping but as the only place to sit to read or watch tv it was less than ideal. Metal folding chairs were provided as well as a couple of wooden counter height chairs but again not much use as comfortable seating.
The kitchen had everything we needed and was neat and clean.
The place was way too far from the metro station to walk there, especially as the area is a bit hilly. Ellen did mention that a bus runs in that direction but we had a car so just drove to DC to sightsee.
A couple of items that could be easily remedied: we were never able to get the tv to work for television so watched Netflix via the Roku device. Perhaps it was user error but better instructions might help. Mildew in the shower could be easily taken care of with some Tilex or bleach. And the last criticism was the biggest- the shower was terrible! The mixing valve only produced cold water or scalding water at a drizzle- definitely in need of attention!!!
Ellen was a good hostess - very pleasant, informative and available.
I really enjoyed my four-day stay. The apartment is so cozy and clean! It has everything you need to feel like it's your own apartment. The owners are super friendly and helpful. Takoma Park Is a cute little town as well. The place was very easy to find. The separate entrance really makes it feel like your own apartment.
The bed is super comfortable, movies and shows are plentiful on the large screen TV. I will definitely come back the next time I am in town in May.
I highly recommend staying here!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Property #555589 in Takoma Park, Maryland! The cute one-bedroom apartment had everything we needed for a comfortable stay in the DC area. Ellen is a wonderful host who kindly stocked the place with essentials for anyone arriving late, including instant coffee, tea, and toothpaste! These little additions made for a warm welcome. She also shared valuable information about places to go in the DC area, including restaurants and hiking trails. Fun!
The apartment is nicely decorated and a pleasant place to hang out. The heating and air conditioning options were excellent. The kitchen is well-stocked with the necessary dishes, glasses, and pots-n-pans, and utensils. The queen-size bed has a comfortable mattress and the bedroom is nicely furnished. Two closets(!) allowed us to store all our stuff while we made trips to University of Maryland via the UMD shuttle (2 blocks away) and downtown DC via the Takoma Park Metro (1 mile/20 min walk). There are two bus stops nearby, which would have shortened our walk to the Metro, but then we'd miss walking through Takoma Park! I especially enjoyed walks up to the Spring Mill Bakery and Food Co-op (5 min walk). Takoma Park is a kick - with public art and artisan gift shops in addition to *free* little public libraries, a hardware store, CVS, bank, and excellent restaurants.
Internet, cable TV, and Netflix were included so we could watch our favorite programs in the evening after dining in one of the excellent restaurants or preparing a meal with organic produce purchased at the weekly Takoma Park Farmers' Market. We loved running on Sligo Creek trail, just two blocks from the residence.
I would definitely come back to this VRBO. I give this location 5 stars!
Beautiful Takoma Park with it's azaleas, folk festival in September
Fall street festival in October
year round farmer's market Sundays on Laurel Avenue
Fourth of July Parade is a great place for a family vacation. Sligo Creek Park is three blocks away with playgrounds, hike and bike trails, tennis, basketball, and golf course offers many opportunities to get out and about.
Add the close proximity to Washington D.C. with it's museums, monuments, arts and culture, and professional and collegiate events and you'll understand why this green oasis is a great place to stay.
The University of Maryland College Park campus is about three miles away, Washington Adventist Hospital and University campus is about three blocks away, and Montgomery College's Takoma Park campus is about one and a half miles from here.
If you want to tour the Eastern Seaboard Marc trains, Amtrak, and VRE connections can be made at nearby Union Station via Washington Metro Red Line which is about 3/4 of a mile away.
