About Michael Bighaus

My wife and I really love making our property as beautiful as possible. My wife Rute is from Brazil and speaks three languages, English, Spanish and Portuguese. I on the other hand speak English and a little Spanish and a little Portuguese, when I say little I mean very little however, I am learning.

We bought the property about 10 years ago. We planted all the trees even before we built. After having the property cleared we put down hundreds of yards of cinder soil over the entire two acres. All the trees you now see, were planted just as starts only a couple feet tall, now the Royal palms are from 25 feet to 30 feet tall. Most of the fruit trees were planted at the same time and are producing delicious fruit. At least once a year we plant a couple more different kinds of fruit trees. Because my wife is from Brazil, we have even found a few varieties from Brazil, one is called Brazilian cherry. A couple years ago we added several different varieties of Banana's, some are cooking banana's.

We really hope you enjoy our place as much as we do and will make it like your own when you are here.

Why Michael Bighaus chose Puna District

I am a Vietnam Veteran and years ago I came from Vietnam for a break from the war, we called it R&R, at that time, I fell in love with the weather and the beauty of the tropics. I decided that if I ever had the chance to live in Hawaii I would do it. I have been blessed to find a wife who loves the same things as myself, the beauty of the ocean and a warm tropical breeze. We both love long walks and the ocean is not but a perfect evening stroll. All our neighbors are wonderful who never seem to be in a hurry and find it easy to talk story. These are just a few of the reasons why we chose this property.

A Hidden Jewel

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I cannot say enough good about this place. If you like quiet, like birds and frog noises, lots of beautiful landscape, fruit trees galore, like a well organized home with plenty of space to put your things, a nice bed and futon couch, internet and cable that work perfectly, grill and all the toys, washer, dryer and everything is clean. Such a short drive from the Hilo airport. We usually go to the beach and hang out but this place was so nice, we mostly stayed put. Thank you to the owners for their quick response always with any questions and the neighbor nearby who could help if need be, but there was no need. We hope to return.

A piece of paradise

  • 5 of 5

MY wife and I had a very enjoyable stay at the cottage. It was very clean, comfortable, and well equipped. The fruit trees were a very giant plus to someone from Wyoming. Picking your own citrus fruit from the trees and eating them fresh and juicing them was a new experience for us. The location was great for access to tide pools and the lava viewing which was an amazing experience for us. We would recommend the cottage to anyone who enjoys the hawaiian culture and outdoor life. Thank you very much to the owners Mike and Rute.

Small house with a huge garden

  • 4 of 5

In the middle of jungle we enjoyed our stay in this small house. It was little hard to find in the first.

This side of the islad is rainy but a good location to drive around and see things. We went swimming in warm springs close by. Horseback riding we did in northern part of the islad and beaches we visited in Kona side. Volcanos and lava was impressive, but maybe the best experience was swimming with sea turtles just next to the airport. This was really nice stay to our family.

Schöne Ferienwohnung mitten im Grünen

  • 5 of 5

Paradise awaits!

  • 5 of 5

This is our first time staying in a VRBO and now we are hooked!

Mike, one of the property owners, was very quick to respond to our request to stay at their cottage. And they provided some great information on the area to help us pre-plan our trip.

The check-in and check-out procedures were very simple and straight forward.

The cottage is beautifully maintained, with comfortable furniture. You could easily have a small family stay here, but with only one room for everyone, we found it perfect for my hubby and me. We were pleasantly surprised at all of the little touches Mike and Rute thought of to make it a comfortable place to stay. It felt like we were staying with family. We slept so well!

The grounds are lovely. There are plenty of fruit trees, although there wasn't very much that was ripe when we were there. Hawaii has some interesting growing seasons. We were pleased to find that Mike and Rute left us fresh bananas hanging on the back patio. They were delicious!

Every night we were serenaded by tiny frogs. We even caught one hiding on a plant by the front door and were able to take some neat pictures and videos so our kids could see.

The cottage is a relatively short drive from Hilo. I think it took us around 30 minutes, but that's pretty good for getting around on the Big Island. Pahoa and Keaau are only around 10 minutes away, so you have a pretty good selection of restaurants and grocery stores. We loved the Thai restaurant and Pele's cafe in Pahoa! You also have to go to the Wednesday night market in Kalapana. It's one giant party with some very interesting locals. An experience not to be missed.

There are some great places to snorkel in the Puna area, but if the weather doesn't cooperate, the cottage is a great place to just sit and relax. The back patio has comfortable furniture and a hammock to sit and listen to the rain, read a book, or take a nap.

Thank you Mike and Rute for sharing your little piece of paradise. We would love to come back here on our next trip to The Big Island!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kind words. You are most defiantly welcome to come back. September and October are the best times to come if you want lots of star fruit. We were there all of October and Rute filled an entire wheelbarrow with starfruit plus she trimmed a lemon tree and picked 140 large lemons, there were at least that many left on the tree.Glad you enjoyed the bananas, that is one thing we seem to have all year round. There is nothing better then tree ripened bananas. Comfortable cottage in beautiful garden

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect stay for exploring the south and east side of the island, not far from Hilo and the Volcanoes National Park. The cottage is surrounded by lush vegetation, fruits and palm trees & has a large wrap around veranda with plenty of shade from sun and rain. The bed was comfortable, the room spacious and we had all we needed (apart from a small saucepan). Booking was easy and straightforward. ps Would recommend the helicopter tour over the volcanoes and waterfalls.
