About Michael Bighaus

My wife and I really love making our property as beautiful as possible. My wife Rute is from Brazil and speaks three languages, English, Spanish and Portuguese. I on the other hand speak English and a little Spanish and a little Portuguese, when I say little I mean very little however, I am learning.

We bought the property about 10 years ago. We planted all the trees even before we built. After having the property cleared we put down hundreds of yards of cinder soil over the entire two acres. All the trees you now see, were planted just as starts only a couple feet tall, now the Royal palms are from 25 feet to 30 feet tall. Most of the fruit trees were planted at the same time and are producing delicious fruit. At least once a year we plant a couple more different kinds of fruit trees. Because my wife is from Brazil, we have even found a few varieties from Brazil, one is called Brazilian cherry. A couple years ago we added several different varieties of Banana's, some are cooking banana's.

We really hope you enjoy our place as much as we do and will make it like your own when you are here.

Why Michael Bighaus chose Puna District

I am a Vietnam Veteran and years ago I came from Vietnam for a break from the war, we called it R&R, at that time, I fell in love with the weather and the beauty of the tropics. I decided that if I ever had the chance to live in Hawaii I would do it. I have been blessed to find a wife who loves the same things as myself, the beauty of the ocean and a warm tropical breeze. We both love long walks and the ocean is not but a perfect evening stroll. All our neighbors are wonderful who never seem to be in a hurry and find it easy to talk story. These are just a few of the reasons why we chose this property.

Schöne Ferienwohnung mitten im Grünen

  • 5 of 5

Paradise awaits!

  • 5 of 5

This is our first time staying in a VRBO and now we are hooked!

Mike, one of the property owners, was very quick to respond to our request to stay at their cottage. And they provided some great information on the area to help us pre-plan our trip.

The check-in and check-out procedures were very simple and straight forward.

The cottage is beautifully maintained, with comfortable furniture. You could easily have a small family stay here, but with only one room for everyone, we found it perfect for my hubby and me. We were pleasantly surprised at all of the little touches Mike and Rute thought of to make it a comfortable place to stay. It felt like we were staying with family. We slept so well!

The grounds are lovely. There are plenty of fruit trees, although there wasn't very much that was ripe when we were there. Hawaii has some interesting growing seasons. We were pleased to find that Mike and Rute left us fresh bananas hanging on the back patio. They were delicious!

Every night we were serenaded by tiny frogs. We even caught one hiding on a plant by the front door and were able to take some neat pictures and videos so our kids could see.

The cottage is a relatively short drive from Hilo. I think it took us around 30 minutes, but that's pretty good for getting around on the Big Island. Pahoa and Keaau are only around 10 minutes away, so you have a pretty good selection of restaurants and grocery stores. We loved the Thai restaurant and Pele's cafe in Pahoa! You also have to go to the Wednesday night market in Kalapana. It's one giant party with some very interesting locals. An experience not to be missed.

There are some great places to snorkel in the Puna area, but if the weather doesn't cooperate, the cottage is a great place to just sit and relax. The back patio has comfortable furniture and a hammock to sit and listen to the rain, read a book, or take a nap.

Thank you Mike and Rute for sharing your little piece of paradise. We would love to come back here on our next trip to The Big Island!

Comfortable cottage in beautiful garden

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect stay for exploring the south and east side of the island, not far from Hilo and the Volcanoes National Park. The cottage is surrounded by lush vegetation, fruits and palm trees & has a large wrap around veranda with plenty of shade from sun and rain. The bed was comfortable, the room spacious and we had all we needed (apart from a small saucepan). Booking was easy and straightforward. ps Would recommend the helicopter tour over the volcanoes and waterfalls.

This is a beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

We could not have been more pleased with our stay. The property is quiet and secluded, but easy to get to. We enjoyed feeling like we had a home to return to each day and not a touristy hotel. We would definitely recommend this property and should we return to The Big Island will stay here again.

Gem of a property south of Hilo

  • 5 of 5

During our 13 day vacation ; we stayed at various locations in big island and by far this was the best place among all of them. The lush green setting brought back memories of our child hood in India. This gem of a place is set in a tropical rain forest like setting with a huge 2 acre lot with all kind of beautiful trees.

On top of it this place has Air Conditioning which many rentals lack over here in big island. We enjoyed the coconut, raw bananas and lemons from their trees. The home was decorated with a Hawaiian theme and well stocked will almost anything you need for a family stay.

The property owner has done a great job of maintaining a beautiful home and well manicured yard; we will definitely will be back for a longer stay next time.

A piece of Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Royal Palm Acres for 5 days in May and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

The property description is precise and exactly as shown in the pictures. It is very well maintained and has all the conveniences of home while being secluded and private. A perfect sanctuary in paradise! We enjoyed the bananas, oranges and limes fresh from the trees. There are many flower trees and plants. My wife and I spent 15 days in different vacation rentals on 3 of the islands and this was by far the best. Mike was easy to work with and communication was very good. I highly recommend staying at Royal Palm Acres. It couldn't have been better! Thanks Mike and Rute.
