We are long distance motorcyclists and hikers. We came to Silver City to visit friends and fell in love with the community.
Being outdoor enthusiasts and loving historic buildings, we found ourselves in Silver City... home of 'Four Gentle Seasons'. We now enjoy those seasons to great benefit since moving here permanently in 2012.
After living in Boulder Colorado for 30 years, we are working to preserve several historic properties here in Silver and we truly happy to have discovered such an amazing community.
Wendy Phillips purchased this house in 2012
We are historical renovators and this property was due for a spa treatment so it could go on to its next 100 years. The history, iconicism and it's size drew us to the property. Located on a hill overlooking a good portion of Silver City it has, beyond a doubt, one of the premier views of town while still being a part of downtown. Boston Hill open space trailhead is at the base of our property...walk out the door to hike for hours overlooking the town of Silver City.
The 1906 Carter house has a long and storied past. One of it's commonalities is the love of it's owners. We thank the many that came before us for using good judgement in their stewardship of this property.
Being a part of the Cultural and Historic districts, walking distance to downtown and Western New Mexico University, and being at the trailhead of the Boston Hill trail system was just all too good to pass up.
This is a welcoming property. In town but still right at the entrance to hiking and close to avenues that lead out of town to great biking, hiking and auto or motorcycle touring.
We are very flexible with the use of the property and can negotiate your needs for use. It is best used for family gatherings on the main level. The apartments on the street level and top level are great for individuals or small groups of 1-5 people.
Our goal is to offer a comfortable, pleasurable experience that will leave you with fond memories and bring you back to our community again and again.
We had a family reunion in Silver City, and the Carter House was the perfect venue.
Our mom/grandma turned 90 this year and we wanted to surprise her with a family reunion in the city of her birth. We held out zero hope to find a place which could accommodate all 22 of us (and 3 little dogs). Boy, were we wrong. The Carter House fit the bill beautifully.
This charming Victorian has a unique configuration: main level with multiple bedrooms with ensuites; a large yoga studio/bunk house on the garden level with rooms around the other side for additional accommodations. (There was even an attic level apartment that could have been accessed if we had even more people!) The main level had air conditioning units in each of the bedrooms and plenty of linens. The bathrooms included shampoo/conditioner/soap and a hair dryer. Although we did not need them, the washer and dryer on each floor would have been so welcomed if we could have stayed longer.
The common space was so comfortable and beautifully appointed. We had large kitchens on each floor with every homey convenience (Kitchen Aid mixers, multiple coffee makers, pots and pans, cutlery, plates, etc galore). But the piece-de-resistance was the extraordinary wrap-around covered porch. The wide porch had 3 lovely tables with enough seating for all of us. Our mom spent hours sitting there with all of us-- chit chatting, watching the few cars drive by, listening to the rain, enjoying the peace. A perfect reunion setting.
Wendy is such a kind and considerate hostess. What a gem.
The Carter House is just lovely. No need to bring anything but your clothes and a smile.
Carter House is an expansive property with many rooms and flexibility for different sleeping arrangements. We had a family reunion with 11 in our party, and another group of 5 were there at the same time. The wrap-around porch which you can see in the photo is an especially nice place to get together for meals and conversation. The decor on the main floor (on the same level as the porch) is stylish, while the other accommodations are more rustic. Next time we stay at Carter House, we'll opt for the main floor as our primary living space, and add extra rooms as needed.
There are 2 full kitchens, an apartment with a small kitchen, and three outdoor grills. Among the various bedrooms, there is one very large open room with a king bed and a number of foam cushions that can be used as pads for sleeping bags, or folded into low "chairs" for casual or youth group events.
We stayed for 6 nights, and found plenty of enjoyable things to do both in town and within a couple of hours' drive. We had a star party one night arranged by a local astronomer, and went birding in the Gila National Forest with an Audubon chapter guide. On our own, we went to Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, The Catwalk National Recreation Area, and historic Hillsboro, a charming village founded in 1877 when gold was discovered in the mountains. The museum at nearby Western New Mexico University houses an outstanding collection of prehistoric pottery. We ate at Diane's and Tre Rosat Cafe, both of which were excellent. We missed out on having dinner at 1zero6 - make your reservations early.
Wendy, the owner, is very responsive and lives 4 blocks from Carter House so she is able to quickly take care of anything you need. We enjoyed our stay very much, and recommend both Carter House and Silver City for an adventurous getaway.
Large, clean and beautiful in a centrally located part of town - loved the am hikes up Boston Hill - wonderful porches and a commercial kitchen!
The Carter House had everything that we needed for a perfect month in Silver City. Wendy & Dave were excellent accommodating hosts, taking care of every possible need.
The location was great - easy walking distance into the downtown area, and right across the street from the Boston Hill Trailhead. Sitting on the large front deck provided us with wonderful views over the city.
The house itself was large, clean & comfortable. Big family/living areas with cozy chairs & couches. A sizable commercial kitchen with a large number of dishes, utensils, gadgets, and appliances. (We are used to minimalist kitchens with our rentals.)
Wendy, Dave and the Carter House receive our highest recommendation.
The Carter House was charming! Everything was as Wendy said it would be. Plenty of room to gather, eat and sleep! The beds were comfortable with beautiful linens and blankets. The children absolutely loved planing in the exercise room and running through out the house. The men loved the large screen TV's for football and there was plenty of space in the kitchen to cook our Thanksgiving feast! It was also well equipped with everything we needed. The location couldn't be better as we just walked to downtown Silver City for shopping and the lighted Christmas parade and of course Jalisco Cafe, (the best New Mexican food ever!) We also took a family hike, the trail head being just a few feet away from the house. The children loved it! Wendy was very helpful when we had questions. She immediately answered all of them. We enjoyed our stay and would love to comeback again!
We spent our girls trip at this exceptional home in Silver City. The accommodations for the seven of us were perfect! We all had our own lovely spaces in which to sleep, we had a spacious, warm communal area where we cooked, laughed, played games, talked, laughed, told stories, laughed: and the location could not have been more convenient to all that Silver City has to offer (and that is a lot!). We all can't wait to come back to our home in Silver City!
Located approximately 90 miles North of the Mexico/US border and 60 miles East of the Arizona border, Silver City is at 6000 ft. in altitude. A high desert area with wonderful outdoor activities and a strong sense of the arts, our community excels in it's friendliness. Come and join us!
