This picturesque, rural , air-conditioned property, consisting of a romantic 200 -year- old trullo and its integral but independent, modern villa is private without being isolated. The new pool is completely hidden from the lane and neighbours can barely be seen as the house is set amongst olive trees, yet the town of Ceglie is visible from the edge of the land.Whenever you visit, there is garden produce: figs, almonds, cherries, beans, peas or mediterranean vegetables. Barbeque peacefully at the shady, garden table; lounge in the sunshine on the big veranda or sunbathe at the poolside. Sun or shade is accessible all day long. The trullo, has its own separate facilities, a large double bed, cane furniture, hanging space, linen, games, television, wifi and books. The villa has two comfortable rooms and a bathroom: one is a king-size bedroom with drawers and wardrobe; the other a living room with generous dining furniture, fitted kitchen, sofa-bed and character fireplace. There is a portable music centre with CDs. and books. It is possible to rent either the trullo, or the villa or the whole property
Higher rates are charged for a larger group of renters ie 6-8
This quaint Italian home is particularly suitable for people who like the countryside and who would like to see the real Puglia. It is comfortable and homely, being our much-loved second home and not just an empty rental property. The neighbours and the couple who maintain the house are generous and hospitable. They are genuinely interested in our guests and want to make their stay memorable but if you wish they will keep their distance. There are many places of interest within easy reach besides those already mentioned: noteably the caves at Castellano Grotte; Matera, the cave- town setting for the Passion of Christ and the whole of Salento with its picturesque resorts and beaches, together with the many fortified medieval sea-side towns like Otranto and Gallipoli. Bari and Brindisi are the big ports for Croatia and Greece. Sicily is near enough to visit for a short stay. Nearer to home, in Ceglie town itself, the Banana Club is a pretty swimming pool with restaurant, cafe showers and toilets. There are also caves nearby. The town has tennis courts and there is a good variety of quality eateries spanning the complete price range.
I grew up in Cheshire and have lived in Shropshire with my husband Alan all our married lives. We have always enjoyed travelling and getting to know the local people. We were teachers in a former life but now we like gardening, music, theatre, cinema and I still act as Tour Manager for an American company taking High school students to France. I play tennis and attend a book club. Most of our time on the patio is spent reading!
Jo Fullwood purchased this house in 2004
We first came to Puglia after an American friend told us about it. We rented a trullo just outside Ceglie and I fell in love with it. This resulted, some time later, in my arranging a short, property-seeking break in the area, with my lump sum in mind!. I had little imagination for crumbling ruins in the middle of fields and this house was habitable immediately even though it was basic back then. On returning home, I tried to find financial means with which to buy it and if it had not been for my adventurous 90 year old father giving me the money, I would never have secured it. My parents travelled at 91 to see what their money had been spent on! Consequently the house is of great sentimental value to me. We have had many holidays there and we have made wonderful friends. The Puglian people have been so generous with their time and help, their produce and hospitality that it is almost embarrassing. We love the simple life they lead, the family values, the lack of ageism and their genuine interest in us. We love the fact that there is little commercialism and no nearby hotel complexes or gawdy attractions. The little town comes alive at night with music festivals, traditional toy festival, celebration of the saints, dancing and the town band. There is usually something interesting happening on the little square and the range of restaurants is varied. We are a car ride away form several good beaches and lovely places to visit but the house is beautifully relaxing and a joy to spend the days in.
The house has a welcoming feel to it and I knew immediately that it was the house for me. I love the huge, private garden full of Mediterranean flowers and produce; the three cones of the trullo are so quaint and picturesque; the verandah is a wonderful extra dimension affording us the luxury of sun, shade, shelter from the odd shower, and barbeques! Trulli do not exist in any other region and the Itrian valley, just down the road, is full of them. Apart from local attractions like Ostuni and Alberobello , places like Bari, Brindisi, Naples, Matera, Gallipoli are all accessible from Ceglie, by train even if you don't want to drive. It is possible to get to Sicily, Croatia and Greece on ships from nearby ports. Hopefully, the new pool will make the property even more attractive, in that we will all be able to stay cool on those blisteringly hot summer days, as well as getting some exercise in readiness for all that gorgeous Italian food.
Our delightful Trullo is just fifty minutes from the airport at Brindisi. Next time, should we be fortunate enough to come again I would take a taxi to the Trullo and hire a car in Ceglie Messapica the absolutely stunning, medieval town, almost unblemished by time and technology which is no more than 2Km away. A combination of delightful, traditional accommodation which has been tastefully modernised to incorporate an impressive canopy which provides shade in the middle of the summer, air conditioning in two of the rooms and the recent addition of a beautiful pool. There is everything you need within the property including two kitchens, two bathrooms, two bedrooms but sufficient accommodation for up to eight people, we were seven and very comfortable. It is the location that takes your breath away, in the heart of its own grove of Olive trees and other delights with views across to Ceglie and all the privacy in the world without the sense of isolation. Finding it late at night was a challenge, but the only challenge, everything else was very straightforward including setting the security system and locking up as we joined the locals in the evening following their (and after a day or two our) long afternoon siesta. That took a day or two to get used to, but the heat of the day demanded that you take things easy. Ceglie really is a gem with loads of places to eat cheaply and well. A litre of the local good wine costs as little as 3 and a much as 5 euros! And despite the poor exchange rate everywhere was incredibly affordable. During our visit we were able to look forward to a series of festivals and celebrations. The friendliness of the locals made you feel very welcome at all times and the restaurants' were grateful for your business. Its not often you feel you want to stay at a holiday home for ever, but I certainly did. Its a home which is what the owners want it to be and my family are just very grateful that they are willing to share this little piece of paradise in the heart of Italy.
Overall we had a lovely stay at the house. The trullo part of the house is so special. The pool was really nice and the kitchen has everything you need. We also used the barbecue outside. As we were 7 we used the bedsofa which was very hard to sleep in for two adults and as we wanted aircondition we put it in the second kitchen with very little space.
The town Ceglie nearby is really nice in the evening. As the house is a bit far out you need a car to go in. We also visited Alberobello and Ostuni which is near by and really beautiful.
We went to the sea nearby and there are nice beaches. Also possible to visit Matera from the house if you don't mind 1 1/2 h drive.
We think the house is a good location for trips in Puglia.
We stayed at Trullo di Giovanna for one week and enjoyed every moment of it, starting from the booking back in January and the kindness of Jo (the owner) explaining in details about the property and surroundings. We were greeted by Antonietta and her husband on arrival, which offered support and suggestions for a great stay. The new addition of the private pool proved fantastic: we used it a lot to relax after a long day visiting towns (Alberobello, Cisternino, Locorotondo, Ostuni and further away Polignano, Lecce and Otranto!) or even spent at nearby beaches. There is plenty of restaurants to chose from and we even used the BBQ on the patio for an evening of fun with the family: fresh fish and local mozzarella are the best buy ... and so cheap! We will definitely be back and I could not recommend more this property, it is really as having a second home away from home.
We have just enjoyed a wonderful week at this idyllic property. Everything about our stay was excellent, from the service we received from the owner to the warm welcome from the caretakers on our arrival. Jo, the owner, answered our initial enquiry very promptly and provided comprehensive information about the property and surrounding amenities.
The trullo is obviously a much loved place. It is well equipped, spotlessly clean and has everything that is needed for a great holiday. The recent addition of a pool is a major plus and it gave us great pleasure to sit by the pool in the late afternoon watching the swallows and swifts swooping down to collect water.
The property is secluded but not isolated, being just a few minutes from the delightful town of Ceglie. There are many excellent places to eat - we had very good meals at Osteria di Giuseppe, Osteria il Capitolo and Pizzeria da Mimma. In all of these the food was very good and reasonably priced.
We will return and heartily recommend this holiday accommodation to anyone wanting a tranquil, beautiful place to stay in Puglia.
We were a group of 6 friends and we enjoyed the place ,the surrounding villages.
The local area is characterised by the stony red earth and olive groves, typical of Puglia. The property benefits from refreshing breezes, situated as it is on a low hill. Within a few miles, you find the undulating hills of vines or wheat fields populated with clusters of trulli houses. The Itria valley with attractions like the Trulli town of Alberobello; the round gabled town of Locorotondo or elegant Martina Franca, is only twenty minutes away by car. Ostuni, the lively, famed 'White City' is 11km away and Lecce, the Florence of the South, is an hour away, whereas there are several different types of beaches within easy reach. Ceglie itself is a quiet little town slightly off the tourist route and very unpretentious, yet it comes to life at night with festivals and illuminations. It has an historic centre with narrow, cobbled streets and a good variety of places to eat.
