About Cathy Thicke

We bought our house in 1989, and began doing Bed and Breakfast in Tofino in 1990, as one of only 5 homes to do so. In 1998 we converted the main floor of the large house into a private vacation rental suite, allowing guests to share our experience of living 'on the beach'. My husband works at the hospital in Tofino, as a physician, and I serve on the District of Tofino Council, Tonquin Trail Committee, and the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust.

Cathy Thicke purchased this house in 1989

Why Cathy Thicke chose Tofino

We chose this property for its 1.3 acre south and west facing beachfront, and its proximity to town and the local hospital! It is a very unique property, with two beaches, hiking trail, great kayaking, 'supping' opportunities, whale watching, breath-taking sunsets, and the best low tide viewing on the Tofino coastline. You can even surf on Tonquin Beach in the winter! The sunsets here are sublime!

What makes this house unique

Beach walking and the new Tonquin Trail through old growth rainforest and sandy beaches, SUP-ing, kayaking, fishing from beach ( June to September ), whale watching from the beach in front, surfing, storm-watching, trampoline on property, and wonderful food- Tofino has many Canadian culinary delights ! ( Sobo, Tacofino and Shelter are our favourites!)

Great spot!

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful spot, very private, but easy walking distance to Tofino and very close to Tonquin Park and the walking trails that lead to the beaches on the other side of town. The accommodation was very well appointed and perfect for three couples. We enjoyed meeting our hosts😃and our stay in Tofino.

Fantastic location! Couldn’t be more perfect for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

Property has essentially a private beach. I was at the property for 10 days with my family. They absolutely loved the location. The water is cold, so just plan to rent wetsuits, but the ocean and beaches are the best I have seen. Fishing with Tonquin Charters was also fantastic. Dining in Tofino I would consider OK. Very upscale with not many options for lesser food. This makes it hard with kids. The condo however covered this by offering a full kitchen and BBQ grill. So happy we stayed on this property. It totally made our vacation. The owner was also very helpful. Her living on the property was unusual for us being from the states, but it was no problem at all.

I would highly recommend this property and would love to vacation again someday to Tofino

An excellent choice for our 10 days in Tofino (only wish it was longer). Spacious living space, comfy beds, well furnished kitchen and views to knock your socks off ! Cathy and Steven are gracious hosts and very knowledgeable of the area. We truly felt relaxed and at home.

The highlight of an incredible trip.

  • 5 of 5

I'm not sure where to start.

- The house: clean, comfortable, spacious and beautiful

- The private beach: breathtaking and soul replenishing

- The host: Cathy is warm, friendly, knowledgeable of the area and is an all around lovely and generous host.

Tofino was 4 nights of a 10 night vacation for my family and I. And it was all we could talk about for the remainder of our trip, and more than likely for many years to come. The town is small, quiet and peaceful (at least during this time of year). The weather was beautiful and the people that we encountered both local and tourist alike were friendly. The hiking is phenomenal. The restaurants are good with a few hidden gems. Ask Cathy for recommendations. Trust me she know her stuff.

I could go on and on about all of the incredible experiences that we had while visiting in Tofino but this isn't a travel blog. But I would like say that my family and I do travel quite a bit, and this trip is one that will always hold a very special place in my heart and I owe much of the credit to Cathy, her home and her incredible insight into the community.

Cathy, I can't thank you enough for the role that you played in making this trip as special as it was for us. I hope to see you again soon. Aloha and a hui hou.

Tofino is a beautiful small town on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is known as the Surf Capital of Canada, with the average age of 36! Tofino is in the midst of the Clayoquot Biosphere Reserve, a world -reknowned UNESCO designation. There are less than 600 Biosphere Reserves in the world and 16 are located in Canada. The Tonquin Trail is at the top of the driveway, 2 kilometer trail, with spectacular views over the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere, and the wreck of the Tonquin ( 45 min. round trip). At low tides, Tonquin Beach is the best beach in the area for tidal pool viewing. Whales, eagles, and fish abound and may be seen from the sundeck or beach in the spring and summer. Tofino is the best place to learn to surf in Canada ! There are many stores providing lessons, with Surf Sister generally thought to be the best. Sobo restaurant, only 1 km. away offers very healthy food at affordable prices ( child friendly menu), and the best margaritas in Canada!
