Surf House is perfect for a romantic getaway or family vacation! Perched above the Caribbean you will have a bird’s eye view of all of the happenings down on the beach. Watch the surfers play and the sail boats fly by. The tropical setting is lush with fruit trees and local flowers. There are two bedrooms each with a private bath and shower. The view from the Great Room of the house is all glass and provides a dramatic setting to prepare meals, hang out or watch the clouds float by.
Couples love the cozy cottage feeling that is provided by being off of the beaten path when you are at the Surf House. There is a sense of privacy as you ascend the 100 steps to reach the house. Call us now to book our secret get away in Little Apple Bay Tortola.
Jon Schutt grew up in the Virgin Islands after his father took a job flying sea planes for Antilles Airboats in the 1970s. A love for the Caribbean Sea has led to a life of sailing, snorkeling and surfing. With his wife Nancy they continue to travel and pass on the many passions found in the Caribbean and beyond to their two children.
Jon Schutt purchased this cottage in 2008
Tortola and Little Apple Bay touch the heart like no other place. When we are relaxing at the Surf House, reading books, watching the surfers, feeling the Caribbean breeze, we feel more alive than ever. This cottage is magical. Everyone who makes it to the top of the 100 stairs says the same thing ' how did you find this place?'
This Cottage has views that can not be matched. All of the glass windows at the Great Room are the entertainment for us. Watching nature unfold perched above the Caribbean in a private west Indian style cottage is something we always dreamed about and feel blessed to be part of each time we go to the Surf House.
Loved the house, loved Apple Bay. The 100 steps were very manageable. Steep twisting driveway was challenging and made for some good stories. Tortola is amazing. People are extremely friendly. We like to think we found some of the out of the way spots. Smuggler's Cove, Nigel's Boom Boom Shack, Nature Boy, the Bat Cave, banana smoothies at Sage Mountain, Virgin Queen in Road Town, Quito's Bananakeet, Da Coal Pot, Bomba, Josiah Bay (have to visit Naomi) and many more all worth visiting. Also enjoyed day trips to The Baths and Jost. Would definitely stay at Surf House again.
everything you need . comfortable beds , big kitchen- drop dead view . close to restaurants and surf beach . me and my husband went with 2 teenagers it worked out perfectly .. loved it . can't waite to go back .
We just spent 5 wonderful days perched up on the mountain overlooking Little Apple Bay and Long Bay. The house is very lovely with a very special, unique feeling. Tremendous views overlooking the water, and wonderfully landscaped with flowers blooming everywhere. The breeze blew constantly and the house was wonderfully cool. Well apportioned kitchen and plenty of water jugs to obtain drinking water while out touring the island. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and were deeply saddened when we had to leave. The stairs and drive way are not for the faint hearted but add to the charm of the experience.
The property manager Rebecca was wonderful and so accommodating while we were there. After we left, I discovered that I left behind a pair of earrings. Rebecca searched until she found them and just mailed them to me!!!!!!!!!!!! She cheerfully went above and beyond the call of duty.
We look forward to another visit to the Surfhouse!

Surf House was a great place from which to explore Tortola, especially the west end. The view of the coast and islands, * stunning *, well worth the steps up and the breeze, lovely. The house is great for a couple or family, especially one with teenagers, as the second bedroom, though attached, is accessed via an outside door. There is a bed/sofa in the living room for smaller kids. Many thanks to property manager Rebecca for her friendly and able assistance while we were there! We would love to go back some time!
We were disappointed in our lodging at Surfhouse in Tortola. This was our first adventure to the Virgin Islands. Our week in St. John was so easy to get around without renting a car. However, in Tortola, the taxis refused to drive up the awful driveway to Surfhouse. We felt captured. Even if we had rented a car, I would have had anxiety in making the 180 degree turns on the driveway. I wondered about drinking the cistern water, the wifi did not work, no games, no informational hospitality about the island, restaurants, etc, poor lighting on the steps, and no television. Ants were in the house.
The house was clean, the view was beautiful and we could hear the surf everynight. AC was not needed. The manager found a friend to transport us, and also transported us herself. I loved the simplicity.
My husband and I spend 9 days at the Surf House for our honeymoon. I honestly don't think we could have picked a better spot. The house was clean, comfortable, and had everything we needed. The views were unbelievable and the pictures will never do it justice. I spent so much time just staring off at the views of Jost Van Dyke and the surfers below. The sounds of the ocean and the constant breezes were so relaxing. The location was great, though 4wd is necessary. (You'll want to rent a 4wd anyway to explore this beautiful island!) We loved being high up on the hill, surrounded by fragrant flowers and trees. It was very private, though not in the middle of nowhere. We felt really safe there. Rebecca, the property manager who lives next door, was very helpful, leading us to the house and answering all of our questions. We also really enjoyed the visits from the friendly neighborhood dogs, Lexi and Rabbit, who both liked to nap on the deck. The bed was comfortable and we loved the sunken rock shower. The stairs were tough the first time but it got easier every trip. We couldn't have asked for anything more. We would return to the Surf House in a heartbeat!
Imagine You on Tortola. Escape, Rejuvenate, Relax…Create memories of love and laughter. Throw a few things in your bag, grab your shades and sunscreen, you will be deep in the Islands in no time. Feel the soft Caribbean trade winds as the palms sway and the calypso plays. Hang out at Bomba Shack after playing in the hot sun all day. Swim off of a white sand beach in crystal clear turquoise water.
Rent a Jeep and see all of the beaches on the North Shore from Josiah's Bay to Smugglers Cove. Dance the night away at a beach side bar. Surf at Apple or Cane Garden Bay.
