More visitor reviews can be seen via the link "About Ann Brown" below this text. Both our houses are in a quiet road on the edge of Aumes, a village overlooking the Herault valley, each house has its own private pool and garden. Not far from Pezenas, Montagnac and the sea. Aumes is wondeful little village, in the countryside and surrounded by vineyards and woods and so the villa really is great for days out where walking and cycling is easy and safe. Fully equipped to “Home Standard” with one double en-suite bedroom and two bedrooms with two single beds in each and a family bathroom You have your own private pool. Fully equipped kitchen for comfortable living, large covered outside entertainment/dining area with BBQ. Mediterranean garden. Choice of over 20 restaurants and pavement cafés within 20 minutes, 10 min to Pezenas,15km to the picturesque fishing ports of Meze and Bouzigues, famous for their sea-food, and the Mediterranean sea with its blue flag beaches.
For information about the house and more photographs, follow the link at the bottom of this page for the website. We have have made it as complete as possible to give our visitors a better idea of the house, ourselves and the area. We live in the village and will be happy to contribute ideas to help make your holiday as enjoyable as possible, if you wish us to.
You will be about 25 minutes from the Mediterranean with its many 'Blue Flag' beaches. The nearest beaches are around Meze or Marseillan Plage, although the whole coastline is accessible and the beaches sandy. The beach at Rochlongue is ideal for younger children, having a gradual slope into the sea, and being protected by a breakwater, there are rocky pools in which to play and easy access by car. Staying in Aumes will allow you to take advantage of a wonderfully diverse region of France which embraces the real spirit of France.
We have lived in this area since 1981.
Your nearest town,Pezenas, 10 minutes from Aumes and probably the most well known market town in the area where most of the houses date from the 17th century.
The Saturday market is a must, it takes over the town center. Local produce including an impressive organic farmers market.
The whole of the old town, which has officially been classified as part of the French National Heritage is original, and it is as it was when Moliere and his theatrical company used to live here. Throughout the 17th century, to be near the governors of the Languedoc province, the aristocracy built impressive private mansions with inner courtyards and gardens. Called the Little Versailles, Pezenas has a wide range of arts and crafts, restaurants and visits.
Aumes is great, lying between mountains and sea, beaches are only twenty minutes drive away.
You will find plenty to keep the whole family occupied and happy. Most things are available in the shops, entertainment is what you would expect from an area which mixes old and new cultures. It’s all here, you only need to visit the tourist office and you will to find all you need to enjoy your stay. In the house book you will find all sorts of information and ideas and a visitors book to let you know what others have done on their holiday.
From your holiday villa you will be able to travel to Spain and back in one day, maybe visiting the Salvador Dali museum, or even staying overnight in Barcelona and visiting the amazing Gaudi Cathedral.
There are dozens of visits to make. The Camargue with its black bulls, white horses and flamingos are close, you will be able to go on safari in a 4x4 with a guide. The upper Hérault river has one way canoeing. You can visit Carcasonne, a walled town with huge battlements and turrets, a really romantic setting.
Most villages have their own market day, perfect to buy a baguette, some cheese and relax.
Before Aumes we spent 10 years living in Pezenas, where the first 5 years were spent renovating a large farmhouse with three holiday apartments plus our own.
Our son Oliver has always lived here and after studying wine production now works with Vin de Pays D'Oc (an organisation for independent growers). Ann has also completed a full time wine course.
In the UK Ann was a dental nurse and John had a boatyard.
We enjoy our life here, run the houses together and spend our leisure time visiting the area, particularly the coastal regions.
Ann Brown purchased this villa in 2004
Aumes is not far from Pezenas and so we knew it already. It's a village away from hustle and bustle of everyday life and yet within easy reach of all we need. There's a village grocery shop, small post office and town hall. Walks in the country are all around the village and are easy for beginners and little people alike. In the village there are fresh eggs and fruits like apricots and cherries when in season.
Bigger shops are in Montagnac and Pezenas
As a location for holidays or living all year round Aumes is perfect for visiting every part of the region. We are able to have days out in Spain, go into the hills for hiking, or visit the coastal fishing villages for sea-food and sunbathing. The cities of Montpellier and Beziers are within easy reach. This area is renowned for fetes and of festivals. In the summer months there is invariably an evening event with music and food to go to. Looking at our visitors book we cansee that our guests enjoy the region as well!
We've enjoyed our two weeks here in Aumes, the villa Merlot has everything you need.
We've been to the area before but this is the nicest accommodation we've stayed in. John is very helpful, nothing is too much trouble and thank you Ann for the delicious cake.
Thank you for a lovely holiday.
House towels and bed-linen for the number of guests, water, gas and electricity are included for all periods,
We will reserve your holiday for a few days while you make your travel arrangements. Just e-mail and ask.
The property is situated in a quiet village and was as described in the advertisement.. It had everything we needed and we had an enjoyable 2 week stay. It is conveniently situated for touring the Herault district with good road communications. Good supermarket a few miles away at Pezenas. Whilst we did use the pool a few times in our first week when the weather was 35c, after a night of midweek rain it cooled and the pool was a little too cool for some of us. Air conditioning worked well when we needed it in week one. Beds comfortable and good shower with plenty of hot water, although space in bathroom a bit confined There was plenty of space for outdoor eating on the terrace but one minor problem was that the dining table indoors only accommodated 3 people comfortably. Good to have UK tv by satellite; wi-fi a bit variable but ok much of the time. It would have been nice to have had extra set of keys.
Had a fantastic week in villa merlot. It was clean and tidy, and lots of space to relax outside. We really enjoyed sitting in the decking area at night with a glass of local wine. Our son loved playing/swimming in the pool untill late, while we could sunbath and keep an eye on him. John was great with directions to local shops on where to get the best fish and wine from. If we had any problems or needed advice john was always there more than happy to help.
The villa is in the perfect location to visit Meze and Pezenas, to see the local history and little market stalls.
We are looking forward to returning as soon as possible and would highly recommend for others to stay.
This is the best designed and appointed property we have rented.
Several different seating areas make it easy to find a quiet corner inside or out, shade or sunshine.
Lovely to have good design, quality towels, table linen etc and decent cleaning materials, not to mention sharp kitchen knives. Thank you, Ann and John, you have really thought about your clients here.
We had a wonderful holiday. The villa has everything you need, plenty of space inside and out. Loved the different seating areas and pool. Perhaps a parasol may be useful for added shade. But it didn't detract from our enjoyment. John and Ann were extremely helpful, particularly when our hire car broke down. The village and surrounding areas are ideal if you want to relax and experience French culture. Would definitely recommend this villa.
Merlot is exactly as described by the owners. When we arrived it was clean and well maintained and there was nothing about it which gave us any reason for disappointment. On the contrary, we were delighted by our choice. The pool is excellent and better maintained than some that we have seen. Ann and John made us feel welcome and were happy to advise us but were never intrusive. Aumes is a lovely village, peaceful and friendly with a small shop and play areas. Nearby Pezenas is a beautiful small town and we enjoyed shopping and eating there. There are many places to visit and we went to Montpellier, Sette, Meze, Cap d' Agde and Carcasonne - all very different but each worth visiting. We enjoyed the quality of food at all the restaurants that we visited.
This was the fifth villa that we have rented for a summer holiday and we are all agreed that it was the best. We are a family of four with two teenage children.
Thanks Ann and John for a superb holiday.
I take no pleasure in writing this review-
Our holiday was spoilt by inaccurate property descriptions and poor property management.
My husband had a frank and honest conversation with the owner about things but there was no recognition of the waste of time and money we had invested in our holiday and the feeling of being let down.
Listed below are the points I would like to highlight-with the exception of no Broadband access all the others could have been 'tolerated'as we were on our holiday but collectively they spoilt everything:-
No Broadband-this was a deal breaker as two of us work from home via the internet and had reports and data to finish and submit. A dongle given to us in the second week had been 'purchased 'for us in the second week as the broadband had stopped working on the 12/6/2013.! We noted that the account was not password protected and the dongle listed May activity.
I had to prove -using my laptop that the dongle didn't work when I complained I had no access as John Brown did not believe me. We tried to use it for the rest of the week so we used the monies on the dongle but it was a no go situation. When I explained that the house was advertised as having broadband Mr Brown became angry and asked me how he should fix it ?
Leaking pool-had hosepipe in it for 3 days and visits daily to refill the pool until we asked the owner to give us some privacy-the leak had been been there before we arrived.
'G' clamp holding posts for pool gates
Oven mounting non existent just some wood not in line with the oven below and above
Guest bathroom leaking basin with bowl underneath
Ensuite bedroom plugs only work with the lights on.
The ceiling above the covered eating area fell down narrowly missing one of the party
Lack of privacy
Surrounds and moulding around the doors unfinished and not painted
No home book although we were promised it on 15/6/2013-never handed over.
Swimming pool all one depth of approx. 5 ft -this should have been clear in the advert as children and timid swimmers will feel unsafe-apparently most French pools are all one depth according to the owner -this is the first one I have seen in 40 years!
We asked for some reimbursement as we felt there were areas that were misrepresented but the request was ignored along with the other issues.
This house was completed in May 2012 and is clearly not finished.
All the above are photographed and documented
On holiday you will want to relax round the pool and for some days you may want to go further afield. This is no problem at all, you will be in one of the most beautiful areas of France, and your holiday home is only a few kilometers from the sea. You can go walking in the National Parks, follow the trail of the Cathares (you should read The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail before you come ISBN 0-552-12138-X ) and investigate one of Europe’s greatest mysteries ( and maybe find the treasure!). You can look out for the Via Domita (the Roman road running from Rome to Spain which is still visible in parts), or visit the Mediterranean ports of Meze, Bouzigues, Sete, etc and enjoy sea-food caught the same day and looking out over the fishing boats.
This part of the Languedoc is truly wonderfull, and retains much of the magic of other times.
Ther are hundreds of sites and activities, amongst them are: The Grottos, Aqualand, St. Guilhem le Desert, canoeing, sea swimming, beaches, etc etc.
Other Activities: Searching out antique bargains, house hunting, trips to Spain, eating out.
Golf: We have a number of golf courses within easy reach, the nearest one being St. Thomas about 30 minutes away. Golfers have stayed with us and tell us that they found it very friendly, with a good restaurant.
