About Paul and Philippa Ward
We were both born, and grew up, in Leicester, England. We met in 1976, when Paul was working as a graphic designer and Philippa worked, in the same office, as a secretary. We moved to Leeds, West Yorkshire, later that same year because Paul was offered a new job. Philippa decided to train as a nurse and qualified in 1980. We lived in various parts of Yorkshire for 30 years. Had our two girls, Charlotte and Nicola, who are now married. Then we decided to have a change of direction, sold our house in the UK, bought Le Manoir des Granges in 2010 and moved here to enjoy a different lifestyle. We now have two grandsons, Alfie born in 2017 and Finnley born in 2018.
Paul and Philippa Ward purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Paul and Philippa Ward chose Peyzac-le-Moustier
We came to the Dordogne with our daughters, Charlotte and Nicola, for some wonderful camping holidays and fell in love with the region. From that very first holiday we said that we would love to come and live here. We never expected to be able to realise our dream! We especially loved the Vezere Valley and when we saw Le Manoir des Granges for sale on a website we arranged a viewing. It was the last of 4 properties; there was no competition! The location is amazing with view across to Roque Saint Christophe. A village with a lovely restaurant and a boulangerie in walking distance. Only 10 minutes drive to Montignac for the supermarket and market. We love walking, cycling and birdwatching - we can do all of these in our free time!

Thank you for your lovely review. The location of the property is perfect for visiting all the main sites of interest, and beautiful villages, as most of them are within 30minutes. Having a bakery and restaurant in the local village in a great bonus, a 5 minute walk to get your croissant and bread for breakfast. The Lascaux caves, Grotte de Font de Gaume and Grotte de Rouffignac are all 15 minutes drive. Walks starting from our property are suitable for all ages and abilities, long or short, easy or difficult, and all of them have beautiful scenery.
We hope you will return.
A little patch of heaven
A cosy little gite with its own sun terrace with a barbecue and views of the well maintained swimming pool and of the Roque St Christophe. The gite is well equipped and the gifts of local wine and home made walnut cake were thoughtful and well received.
Paul and Philippa are great hosts, always available to provide help and advice on destinations and best routes.
Thank you for a lovely holiday.
Absolutely as described on Internet
Perfect Gite for two in a beautiful part of France. Close to interesting towns and villages. The hosts are lovely and do all they can to make your stay perfect. Be cheeky and ask for a piece of their scrummy walnut cake. We thoroughly enjoyed our break!
Great location and excellent accommodation.
We spent two great weeks in the Haybarn. It is a very spacious gite with a large private patio which is very well equipped with table, chairs and sun loungers. We had good access to the swimming pool which is a real bonus in the sunny weather. La Rocque St Christophe is directly opposite the property and it was a beautiful sight from our bedroom window and patio. Paul and Phillipa are wonderful hosts who are very happy to advise you on places to visit, walks in the area and good restaurants. They offered to book a table at the local restaurant on our first night and the meal was superb.
The Haybarn location is perfect as there
are so many places to visit within 10 minutes to an hours drive away and many good restaurants too. It was great to be able to visit the local Boulangerie for our daily pastries and bread which was only a 5 minute walk away. We can highly recommend this as a wonderful place to stay.
Even better than I'd hoped
I've recently returned from 2 very happy weeks at the Haybarn gite which more than met my expectations.
I chose it because of where it is, in the Vezere valley, close to Lascaux and with an astounding view of La Roque Saint Christophe across the river. I found so many interesting places to visit; castles, caves, gardens, restaurants....and all within a drive of no more than 40 minutes. This part of Dordogne really is amazing.
But I also enjoyed a few days "at home" on my private terrace overlooking the pool. Inside, the gite was as comfortable as it looks in the photos. There was everything I needed to prepare meals though, because it was summer, I mostly ate salads. I very much appreciated Philippa's gift of vegetables from the garden and homebaked gateau de noix.
Philippa and Paul were so helpful, carrying my luggage to and from the car, always available if I needed anything, but not at all intrusive. The welcome gift of a bowl of walnuts and a bottle of wine was much appreciated.
Thank you, Philippa and Paul, I had a wonderful time in your lovely gite.
Perfect in all ways!
Paul and Phillips's place is beautiful and they are lovely hosts. The natural beauty of the place is unsurpassed and th accommodation was perfect from the bottle of wine and locally grown nuts offered upon arrival, to the spotless gite, the wonderful pool, the cuckoo calling from nearby woods to all the wonderful sites and attractions. Very peaceful and replenishing place. I especially appreciate that the hosts kindly gave me an unexpected ride to the train when a family member became ill. Couldn't have been a better experience!
Les Granges is situated in Le Moustier near to Montignac and the beautiful village of St Leon sur Vezere. Close to Lascaux caves, the towns of Sarlat, Beynac, Domme and Perigueux. Directly opposite is La Roque St Christophe, the site of a small Bastide town dating back 55,000 years and inhabited up to the 16th century. This kilometre long cave carved into the rock thousands of years ago, is lit up at night and makes a spectacular view from the property. There are many historic sites dating back to Prehistoric times, caves, grottos, cave paintings, all situated in the most beautiful countryside. This area has been made famous by Jean Auel's Earth's Children books. The sixth and latest one, Land of Painted Caves, was published in 2011. Many of our customers come to stay to see the area linked to these books.
The Perigord is noted also for its gastronomy, foie gras, truffles, confit de canard, wild mushrooms and walnuts! We are surrounded by pretty villages, all with markets at least once a week, giving our renters the opportunity to experiment with the local produce. As well as walking, cycling, canoeing and golf there is a Budhist centre and a Hammam very close so you can either be active or relax!
Other Activities: Canoing, paintballing (30mins), Microlite tuition
Golf: There are four 18 hole courses and three 9 hole courses in the Perigord region. Most are between 35minutes and one hours drive from our property, others are slightly further but well worth the drive!
This is an excellent website which gives you all the information you need. http://www.golf-dordogne-perigord.com/golfs.html
There is also information about a free golf pass which gives you discount on all the courses in the region.
Ski: No Skiing.
