About Sandra

My name is Sandra and I have lived in Kona since 1970. I came from California in search of a clean beach to lay on while deciding what major to take in college. Well, as it turned out, I stayed - and have loved living here ever since. I have traveled the world and must say 'there is no place like home'. When my children grew up and moved out I discovered that this home was too big for just me, so I made a vacation retreat of the downstairs portion, which includes the pool and yard and I'm so very happy to share this precious, peaceful place with visitors and share my knowledge of the Island as requested. I look forward to meeting you.

Sandra purchased this house in 1990

Why Sandra chose Kona Coast

This particular area of Kona is perfect as far as climate and location. I have lived in many different areas of the Island, and this location is, by far, the BEST.

It's at 900 ft. elevation, which allows the great views and the temperate climate. Coastal living can be very hot in Hawaii, while we are enjoying soft trade winds to keep the temperatures perfect. I also love this location because there are approximately 12 world class golf courses within a short drive, and the harbor is just 3 miles away, the launching place for many water activities. We are on one full acre of lush flora and fauna, with no neighbors below us, which gives us all the privacy you could ask for.

What makes this house unique

If you choose to stay home one day and forego the many close, exciting, fun activities that the Big Island has to offer, this is what a typical day may look like. . . Wake up to the lovely sounds of many song birds, lounge around the private pool and soak up the warming rays of the sun while awaiting your turn for an incredible, nurturing, relaxing massage by one of Kona's most experienced and well trained medical Massage Therapists (me : )). Leisurely prepare some breakfast in the outdoor kitchen while enjoying melodious Hawaiian music piped out to the pool area as the palms gently sway and the wind chimes sing to entertain you. IF you feel like going for a little walk, take hold of the fruit pickers and roam around the acre; in season you may find avocados, mangos, papaya, banana, zapote, pineapple and much more / help yourself.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We came to Kona to look for property to buy and wish we could afford this one. It is IDEAL. Up at 900 feet elevation which makes it cooler and more comfortable than by the ocean and allows beautiful flowers and fruit to grow. Loved it loved it loved it.

Owner's Response: Aloha Shah, Thank you for your kind words; please come again. I hear from so many people that this place is even better than the pictures, but I'm not a photographer and it's difficult to capture "comfort" and "exquisite" in pictures. I'm happy your family had a good Kona experience and I was able to accommodate you. Much Aloha and Mahalo Sandra

Perfect Private Setting

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect spot for our family spring break vacation. Our son is six and had a blast in the pool doing cannon balls off the diving board as well as swimming in the hot tub. We were able to relax each day and BBQ, prepare great meals in the outdoor kitchen. We had total privacy and Sandy and Ken were great to chat with and there for anything we needed. This place is truly a slice of heaven. We can't wait to come back here some day. The house location is awesome too. It was 10 degrees cooler than Kailua so that was a treat. The location was very convenient to explore the whole island!

Beautiful views with the most lovely garden, pool and spa

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time. We climbed the hill in our rental car and the heat of Kailua-Kona lessened, becoming gentle breezes and just right temperature.

A private steep drive around the back leads to the oasis, making it even more our own. Sandra greeted us and kindly answered a lot of questions. Thank you Sandra. The notebook she made is very useful containing common sense info and island favourite activities and restaurants.

The main living room/main bedroom combo worked well. The adventures of the island are many and so the main room became our outdoor/indoor reading, resting, hang out space after a busy day.

We used the pool and spa every day! And the outdoor kitchen was really fun for whomever cooked, enjoying the comfort of mild weather.

The living space works so well we didn't want to leave.

We will be back. There are many adventures left to do on our list.

The location is great for driving anywhere! -towards Waimea; much to see that is like nothing else, or driving to the coffee farms or Captain Cook or the Paleaku peace garden on your way to Volcano Village.

My husband really enjoyed golf on top of the hill, 7 minutes from the house.

I liked that Kailua-Kona was close, just down Palani, easy to keep our fresh food stocked and plenty of restaurants. There is shopping and great Kona coffee.

We went on hikes and were glad we wore sneakers not flip flops.

And then we'd come home and crash.

The living space is separate, like a big condo or apartment with a magnificent view. A separate tasteful entrance and deck with a hammock so great for a rest or reading. It is also nice to have good info or answers to questions a quick call away. Sandra and Ken are there, but we didn't notice. Our space was our space.

We could have chosen a house near the ocean, but that is for people who like a more desert feel, like Kihei on Maui. Hot. To each their own. We like the amazing foliage up higher and the temp and the endless view and sunsets.

This is a family vacation with older kids/teenagers or a getaway kind of house. It is serene and in a real neighbourhood. There is morning and evening commuting traffic sounds, but it just made me feel like we weren't isolated in a jungle. Easily accessible to all parts of the island to explore and then come home to a paradise. So nice! So perfect! So restful! Thank you Sandra and Ken!

Secluded Relaxation

  • 5 of 5

This site is perfect for those who want a relaxing, quiet, secluded stay with a great view of the ocean. Sandra does a great job making you feel at home but giving you total privacy. Hard to believe how free we felt to relax here. We spent time reading in several spots, in the sun, on the lanai in the shade, inside and outside. Then we would swim or sit in the hot tub. Then we would stare at the view. Then we would sleep and then eat. Then repeat all of those activities. It's close enough to go into town to the grocery store for making your own meals in the nice, outdoor kitchen as well as go to restaurants as we did, once a day. It's also well located for field trips out to various sites. We thought it was perfect for us -- we were here to chill out -- and that's what we did!

A Perfect Mix of Proximity and Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My family, including 9 and 12yo kids, was here in February, 2017. This property is truly a perfect, easy mix of proximity to Big Island activities/needs (e.g., beaches, whale watching, snorkeling, grocery stores, etc.) and retreat (e.g., family time in the pool, making dinner (the outdoor kitchen was a really pleasant surprise, as it allowed everyone to be together while the cooks prepared meals), playing board or yard games, gecko spotting in the spacious yard, etc.). The property is close to amazing beaches (10-30 minutes by car, depending on location), but as amazing and fun as the beaches are, they can be busy, crowded and hot -- Sandra's property provides the perfect reprieve! Some of you may be wondering what it is like to stay at a property where the owners also reside. Let me assure you the arrangement is not a problem (and, really, is a great benefit). Sandra did an outstanding job of providing the various items and amenities needed to spend a day at the beach (e.g., boogie boards, cooler, frozen ice packs, beach chairs, beach toys for the kids), to prepare a meal (e.g., pots/pans/glasses/utensils), and have fun in the pool (e.g., floaties, dive toys, etc.). However, if, on the rare occasion, we had a question, Sandra was available and accommodating. The kids loved the pool and hot tub, and it was great having onsite laundry (in fact, we forgot our suits in the dryer on the day we flew out--oops--and Sandra texted us to let us know that she found them and would mail them to us). The access to fresh avocados was awesome, too. Very close to the airport too, which allowed us to squeeze in a bit of pool time the morning of our last day. Highly recommend!

Public tennis courts, many world class golf courses, great shopping and many ocean sports available close to home.

Kona is known for its world-class marlin fishing. We are almost directly above Honokohau Harbor which has a fun restaurant for lunch and is also where the fishing charters and many other ocean activities (sunset sails, manta ray snorkleing and diving cruises, zodiak tours, whale watching etc.) are based. There are some wonderful white sand beaches and tide pool areas within a 10 or 15 minute drive. Costco is also just about a 5 minute drive and is a great place to stock up for your vacation and it is usually the most economical place to buy gas.
