About Bruce Haase

Dutch-American living in Amsterdam for the past 25 years. I have always traveled a lot for my work and holidays and have seen some great and some pretty bad accommodation. The small attention to detail is often the most important. I enjoy meeting people from different cultures and different backgrounds. As I have always worked internatioally, I speak a few languages, including: English, Dutch, French, Spanish, Afrikaans, and some German.

Bruce Haase purchased this apartment in 1991

Why Bruce Haase chose Amsterdam City

We live on the ground floor and first floor of the building, and have slowly renovated it since buying it more than 20 years ago. The thing I like most about the building is the view. It has the charm of looking out on an Amsterdam canal with a quaint little marina on the other side of the canal, but what's quite unusual is that there's and a small park beyond that.which means that, at least in the summer, we don't see any other buidlings, just trees. This makes it very light and quiet. It feels like the best of both works. Because of course being in the Jordaan, there are literally hundreds of restaurants, cafes and galleries within a few minutes walk.

What makes this apartment unique

The property was built in the 1870's and renovated in the 1930's. The stained glass windows and sliding stained glass doors are all original. But while it maintains the charm of a traditional Amsterdam building, it also has all the modern amenities including double glazing, central heating, a modern kitchen and nice bathrooms. Tastefully furnished. The other thing, important to me at least, is trying to make the buidling as eco-friendly as possible. With a solar water heater, photo voltaic panels, and renovations that always take into account the planetary impact.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This comfortable apartment is in a quiet location and is an easy walk through one of the world's truly unique and great city neighborhoods into Amsterdam center. The gracious hosts make a stay in their apartment that much more enjoyable. Well equipped, plenty of space, good location, a fantastic value. Thanks Bruce and Eelco!

My wife, two daughters (13 and 10), and I spent a week in one of the Marnixkade Canalview Apartments in the fall of 2005. It was an absolute delight -- tastefully furnished, perfectly located in a quiet neighborhood within easy walking distance to the sights of Amsterdam, reasonably priced. But what made our stay special was the non-intrusive attentiveness of our host, who assisted us in many ways. Our stay was a perfect blend of the social connection one finds at bed-and-breakfasts and the privacy offered by big hotels. When we return to Amsterdam, we'll surely stay here. We VERY highly recommend it!

The best choice

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Mondriaan for 2 nights and it was the best decision we made during our whole trip. All the instructions for arrival were well communicated and the host responded to all our questions super fast. The apartment is lovely and homely. It had everything we needed. 5 stars for the cleanliness and attention to details. We would definitely like to return next year.

fabulous gem and great location

  • 5 of 5

Perfect place for our brief city visit.

Very well appointed apartment, equipped with everything we needed. Nicely furnished &very comfortable. Quiet and private. Ideal location.

As many have commented, the stairs are extremely steep - especially if you have very large suitcases (we were traveling through Amsterdam on our way back to the US after a 2 week vacation in Europe, so we had very large cases!). That didn't deter us in the least, but it could be a deal breaker for some.

It really was lovely to stay in an authentic canal property away from the crowds. Easy access to the central areas and we loved to walk through the charming streets where we stumbled upon great restaurants and bars.

My only niggle is having to pay separate cleaning fees and an 'early' check out fee (for an 8am check out) - that seems ridiculous and exorbitant to me and I really do begrudge paying it. I feel that many property owners charge cleaning and other fees separately in order to make their per night price seem such a great deal. I really think they should just include all these extras in the upfront rental cost....that way comparing properties is far more exact and fair.

Would stay again if ever we returned as it was such a perfect location

Loved our stay at Mondriaan apartment!

  • 5 of 5

We just came back from our vacation in Amsterdam, where we spent 8 night in the Mondriaan apartment. We really enjoyed the apartment!!! We were a family of four (kids ages 9 and 11) and the 1 bedroom was plenty big for us. We found everything just as described, in perfect working order- kitchen had all the appliances we needed, washer/dryer was great, wi/fi was accessible. The binder with all the helpful information for the apartment, and the surrounding area was such a great idea! The apartment itself is on a quiet street overlooking a canal. And the view was amazing!! The location is perfect; you can walk to most of the other parts of the city and it is a short bus ride from Central Station and on several other tram lines. Also it is right in the center of the Jordaan neighborhood, which is filled with so many great restaurants. We loved the Ethiopian and Tapas restaurants nearby. Two grocery stores are also 8 min away. There is a gym at the end of the street that is available for use as guests (and my husband used it for swimming!). Finally, we really appreciated all the excellent communication and help we got from Bruce and the rest of the crew. Our questions were always promptly answered and very helpful. A pleasure to be in touch with! We will definitely stay here again next time we are in town.

Wonderful location & wonderful apartment

  • 4 of 5

Our family just came back from Amstedam & we stayed at the Mondriaan apartment #2. There were 4 adults & my husband & I stayed on the main apartment & my son & his girlfriend stayed in the upstairs bedroom. The main apartment was overlooking the canal & had a living room/dining room combination. The kitchen was small but had modern appliances. The bedroom was small but the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small as well especially since the washer/dryer was inside the bathroom. The bathroom needs better lighting. The apartment had wifi so it made it easier for all of us to stay connected with family & friends in the U.S. One thing that we informed the property manager was that the instructions for the washer didn't inform us how long the washer runs. I put the setting for cotton & it took 3 hours for the wash to run. No big deal, but we were just wondering how long our clothes were going to be washed.

The apartment was also centrally located to the bus/tram stop, restaurants, cafes, bars, & supermarkets. We got our cleaning deposit back on the morning before we left after Kosimo (spelling?) inspected the apartment. Our interactions with everybody was very friendly & easy. We would definitely recommend this property.

Great choice in Jordaan away from the crowds.

  • 5 of 5

Very pleased we found the Mondriaan apartment in Jordaan for many reasons.

Situated in this (relatively) quieter neighborhood away from the chaos of the downtown hordes this was our retreat when we'd had enough for the day. No need for vehicle - easy and pleasant walk into the city.

Delighted to find how clean and well equipped it was - maid still cleaning when we arrived. We dropped our bags and went shopping at nearby supermarket with some regrets (don't make the same mistake!) - as when we returned we found the apartment stocked with everything from the staples such as juice, bread, butter, eggs, cheese, ham to a table setting with fruits, a basket of assorted goodies, beer and wine and a vase with fresh roses!

Extremely generous, very welcoming and much appreciated.

Bruce on vacation himself but niece Ise was delightful and answered all of our questions. Thanks Ise!

The apartment is well equipped and WiFi pretty fast. I agree with prior reviews - stairs steep (as is the norm here) and not for disabled. We are a couple of late 50 yr olds - no problem. The one bedroom apartment is perfect size for 2 and maybe two kids but a squeeze for 4 adults noting the one small bathroom off the bedroom.

Was impressed with all the Eco/power saving features, the washer and dryer, all the appliances you could possibly need, though never did get the hang of the Innowave oven even with online 84 page instruction manual!

We look forward to booking here on our next trip back this way and can definitely recommend it to others.

Excellent Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We arrived earlier in the day when the apartment was still being prepped for our arrival. Bruce was great and let us put our luggage in the apartment while we left and explored the city. The apartment that we stayed in on the 4th level is exactly as the pictures show. Very comfortable and we felt at home immediately. We didn't see Bruce much except at the beginning of our stay and at the end and he was great at answering our questions and telling us about the city and what we could do. The guide binder that he and his wife put together was excellent as it told us everything that we had questions about. We would go exploring from about 10am and get back at 10-11pm after a full day and it was always great to be there. Kitchen was clean and great and there were some basics stocked for us. Bathroom was very clean too. I wouldn't hesitate to book this apartment again as we would definitely return to Amsterdam for another vacation!
