LABENNE is an ideal location for a family beach & activity holiday; it offers many amenities and the local beach is sandy and close to the house so that it takes only a few minutes to return home for lunch, or even to collect a new book. Bathing is supervised by lifeguards during the main season and there is also an inland Aqua Park with huge water slides and fresh-water pools with lots of fun activities for adults and children alike. The resort offers a range of other activities such as,tennis, tree-top exploration, clock golf, horse riding, cycling, trekking & roller blading, as well as surfing, beach sports and swimming in the breakers.
Local amenities include a choice of many French & Spanish restaurants, pizzerias (take away), bars and bistro cafes as well as beach BBQ’s and disco dancing for the young at heart.
There is a huge hypermarket in Labenne Ville (2km) and many shops within easy walking distance for fresh bread and vegetables, general provisions, wine (!) etc
Accommodation: For further details, including floor plan and additional photos, please visit the chalet owner's website - www.labenne.co.uk.
Atlantic Beach: The Aquitaine coastline is a 100 mile stretch of soft golden sand from Bordeaux to the Spanish border and there are championship-standard surfing beaches at the neighbouring resorts of Hossegor and Seignosse. When the tide is turning, the breakers at Labenne are magnificent (for those who are confident in water). The beach is watched over by lifeguards throughout the summer and a green flag indicates that it is safe even for the tiniest tots to play safely in the shallows (as long as they are supervised by an adult). The beach is cleaned every day of high season.
Walking and Cycling : For the more leisurely inclined, there are many forest footpaths around Labenne, whilst for those who seek a slightly faster pace bicycles may be hired locally. The riverside nature walk and cycle path from Labenne to Cap Breton is a delightful and safe route for all ages. This same woodland pathway has also been extended to the South and sightings of heron and kingfishers are common on the cycle ride to the nearby resort of Tarnos.
There is also a prestigious tennis club in Labenne where courts may be hired by the hour and, on the outskirts of the town, a riding stable offers lessons or 'hacks' depending on your standard. Finally the local game - pelotte is well worth watching especially at Grand Chistera standard.
The holiday flat is great for a family with children, as it offers enough sleeping possibilities for everyone, especially sleeping in the loft is exciting for children. The flat is within a short distance of the ocean. We enjoyed eating breakfast or supper on the terrace. We enjoyed our stay!
We enjoyed our stay in Labenne. Even though the weather wasn't perfect we still had a fabulous week. Near great areas to visit such as San Sebastián Spain, Biarritz, Espelette and of course Hossegor. Waves in Labenne were too big for our daughters to swim this week.
The cottage is clean and well equipped. The backyard is very well kept. Perfect for a family of 5. The only downfall is the uncomfortable sofas for our rainy days and movie nights.
The owner Stewart is very helpful and pleasant.
All in all great week,
The Martins (Canada)
We had a fantastic time in Labenne and loved the area. Lots of beach and regular cycle trips to Capbreton. My husband is a keen gardener and couldn’t stop himself from using the clippers to trim the hedge where some spikes had grown out of the top. When I told the owner and begged his pardon for my husband’s over-enthusiasm he sent me an extra 10€ with the return of my key deposit!
We dined out in local cafe/restaurants most evenings and must have tried at least five different places all within easy walking distance; we received excellent service at all of them and enjoyed good food at very reasonable prices. The accommodation in the house suited us down to the ground (it’s ideal for two adults and two children) and we loved sitting with a glass of wine on the patio in the late evenings after dinner. All in all we had a most enjoyable and relaxing time.
We all had an amazing time. Exploring the local area, bike riding, beach, trip to the Pyrenees and the Olympics in the evenings watching Team GB.
Labenne was such a lovely place and the children really enjoyed themselves - both spent hours body boarding in the sea!
Place was well equipped and great communication from Stuart the owner.
We only give this 4 stars, as for a family of five with some large hairy teenagers it was a bit of a squeeze - otherwise it would have been a 5*
We particularly liked having a gas cooker/chimney built in to the patio which meant we could sit and cook outside in the evening and not fill the house up with cooking smells and extra heat.
The location of the house is perfect. Turn left a few metres and you have the boulangerie and paper shop, turn right and a five minute stroll brings you to the beach, where there a couple of civilised cafés and showers/facilities. Just enough development to give you what you need but far from being 'over touristy'.
Be warned the surf can be very big - so this isn't a beach where toddlers can splash around in the waves. If you like bodyboarding though you're in the right place.
If you have older kids the climbing park is amazing. A real challenge - we were there 6 hours and didn't finish it all by any means. I could barely walk the next day. The water park is fairly modest but still good.
We didn't take bikes but wished we had.
A day trip to San Sebastian in Spain was fun for a change of scenery. 45 mins each way in the car.
Excellent communications and instructions etc from Stuart the owner. All in all a great holiday and we can recommend it highly.
Labenne is a lovely place to have a holiday and this house was very nice with everything you need and walking distance to a great beach. Really good value for money and a nice little garden to relax in. Highly recommend.
Labenne is easily accessible by air, land & sea and is quite close to the airport at Biarritz. AIR - Ryanair and Easyjet fly to Biarritz (often at bargain basement prices) and the airport is only 40 minutes away by (hire) car or taxi. Also the major airines have scheduled flights to Bordeaux and Bilbao - each is about 2 hours away by car. CAR - the drive through France from the Channel ports takes a full day and so, depending on ferry times, you may chose to break the journey with an overnight stop. The Loire valley makes a rewarding stopover since it is approximately halfway and offers an opportunity to visit the magnificent chateau/castles along the river. TRAIN - Bayonne, which is within taxi range, is on the main rail route for fast trains (TGV) and the overnight sleeper service from Paris to Spain. SEA - the ports of Blbao and Santander are used by Brittany Ferries and are only a 2 and 3 hour drive (respectively) from Labenne
Golf: There are literally dozens of first class golf courses within a 45 min drive of Labenne. The nearest championship course is at Hossegor only 10min drive to the north. It is a par 71 links course established in 1930 and includes many challenging features. Slightly further north is Seignosse which frequently figures in the top 25 Courses in Europe. It threads its way through pine forests and cork groves over steeply undulating terrain and daunting water hazards.
The 'Golf Pass Biarritz' covers 5 major courses in the area: Le Phare in Biarritz itself, Seignosse & Moliets (within 30 mins drive up the coast) and Arcangues & Bassussarry a similar distance in the other direction (within 30 mins drive southwards). All are championship courses with many challenging features and interesting contoured greens (often multi-level). The European Challenge tour is an annual visitor to Moliets which is ranked amongst the top ten courses in France
There are two excellent nine hole courses within easy reach: one at Port d'Albret (30mins) which circumnavigates an inland lake and features many taxing long holes - and also has a 'fun' driving range (using 'floating range balls) directly across and into the water; the other at Ilbarritz with a huge range area and an exciting nine hole course with half the holes situated on the cliff side with magnificant views of the Atlantic and the other half (down a steep buggy track) at sea level and featuring many water hazards.
