Herrukot, our holiday home built in 2015, is located in a gorgeous isolated location right on the lakeside. The house contains two separate bedrooms, each with very comfortable beds that are 90x200 cm in size, a bathroom with a floor-level shower, underfloor heating throughout the house, living/dining room with a pull-out sofa bed for two, and a completely equipped kitchen including a dishwasher, a ceramic-top stove (4 hobs), and an oven. With a floor area of 66 sq.m, it offers a relaxing vacation. Wi-Fi is available at no cost, as well as bed linen, bath towels, and dish towels. The icing on the cake is the 60-sq.m wooden terrace with its own hot tub and a fantastic view of the lake, mountains, and the Hekla Volcano. The house is somewhat isolated, though because of its ideal location in the Southern Region, it is great for winter stays. The Northern Lights are a completely different experience as there are no lights from nearby houses. Our farmhouse is just 400 m away, you can certainly ride out from our farm. We're happy to help if you have any questions about your vacation. We have plenty vacation planning tips! We put a major focus on ensuring that your individual wishes are fulfilled, and are happy to help plan your excursions!

About Renate Hannemann
Our German/Icelandic family has lived on the Herridarholi farm, some 400 m from the holiday home by the lake. We run a guesthouse there during the summer, and offer riding tours. Our agricultural operation runs year-round, with sheep, horses, and dairy cows.
Renate Hannemann purchased this House in 2015
Why Renate Hannemann chose Southern Region
Since Iceland is worth a visit even outside of the summer, we decided to offer vacations year-round as well. That's why we built a holiday home on the prettiest part of our 400-hectare farm, and so our Herrukot holiday home was born.
What makes this House unique
The isolated lakeside location allows for a relaxing vacation, especially when combined with the central location and the good access road. The house is so spacious and comfortable that even spending a day indoors when the weather isn't good is a fine holiday experience. The hot tub during a snowstorm or under the northern lights is an unforgettable experience!

Great vacation home with a great view.
Great few days spent at this vacation home. Was thoroughly pleased with everything from the cleanliness, amenities provided, to the recommendations on things to do. Would have no second thoughts of booking this place again given the opportunity, worth every penny.
Five of us shared this lovely cabin, and we would not have changed a thing! The location was breathtakingly beautiful and well-placed for day trips to rivers, waterfalls, geysers, national landmarks, and every stop on the Golden Circle. Oh, and the hot tub was heavenly! The hosts were kind and helpful! I look forward to planning a return visit! Thank you!!
Cozy, private location with great access to Golden Circle and Southern Iceland
This property is a cozy, private cabin situated right on a small lake. Between its heated floors and solid construction, we remained quite comfortable regardless of what the weather threw at us. The property has a well equipped kitchen and has a good supply of pantry items left (I believe) by previous guests. The property is well located to serve as a base for exploring the golden circle area and southern Iceland. Despite it central location, it is still remote enough that we were able to see northern lights one night when the clouds cleared. Renate is a thoughtful owner who is clearly committed to her guests having a great experience. I highly recommend this property.
Wonderful stay at Herrukot
My wife, 3 kids (ages 14-22) and I spent a week at Herrukot in late March 2018. It was perfect for our needs - we went driving somewhere every day, clean, warm, cozy at night. While Renate was away during our stay, she was very easy to work with. We had some challenges paying but I think this was a one-time HomeAway issue. The kitchen was equipped with all the basics (including all cookware and utensils, plus some spices and cooking basics) and the grocery store in Selfoss wasn't far away to feed our hungry family at a reasonable cost. While the sights in Iceland are spread out and we chose to drive over 2000km during the week, the location reduced the driving to the south/central sights. The beds were warm and comfortable (though the queen is really two full beds tied together) and our son got the couch. Our family spent little time in Reykjavik (a half day saw most everything we wanted) and we chose the Secret Lagoon over the Blue Lagoon (if you choose the Blue Lagoon, book early - first available reservation was almost 2 weeks out and 100 euro a person; Secret Lagoon wasn't crowded and 20 euro a person). We were happy to see the Northern Lights with the help of My Aurora Forecast app - but for us they were much less spectacular than on youtube. The overnight view of the Northern Lights on the flight over from the airplane was better. For us, the weather was fine (0-10C) but very windy so don't forget to throw in the extra layer of clothes and hats. I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did!
Was a lovely place to stay. Didn’t see the Northern Lights but was still an amazing holiday
This is IT - everything we were hoping for, and more!
We were VERY pleased with this rental! It was cozy and warm (we stayed in mid-January), very comfortable, well-maintained, well-stocked, with beautiful views, privacy, and was a perfect location from which to explore the Southern Region. We were never cold in the house; the heated floors kept the inside quite comfortable and were wonderful to walk on barefoot! We slept very well in the comfortable beds. We enjoyed the use of the hot tub every night...scurrying across the snow-covered deck to dip in and gaze up at the stars! (Who needs to go to the Blue Lagoon, when you've got "your own"!) On one of our nights there, we got to see the Northern Lights! (Hint: Many factors are involved in whether the lights occur...clear skies being only one factor. If you can visit "Aurora Reykjavik," right next to the "Saga House," in Reykjavik, you'll understand all this a lot more. At the very least, get the app "My Aurora Forecast & Alerts" and pay attention to the KP Index which will tell you the probability of seeing the lights. We saw them when the KP Index was 5. Be sure to look behind the house for them, too...we almost missed them, thinking they'd be all over the sky!) Regarding this wonderful rental property, just a few helpful notes for any non-European visitors who, like us, may not have experienced much European travel: 1) when the property states that there's a "coffeemaker," it's a French press; not something that plugs in; 2) If you like a washcloth when showering, bring your own; and 3) to operate the shower, the left side of the horizontal bar controls the water volume i.e. on/off, and the right side controls the water temp i.e. hot/cold. *Bottom Line: if you're looking for comfortable/well-appointed accommodations, privacy, in a beautiful location and away from city life and lights, with convenience to touring the Southern Region, at a great value, for an unforgettable experience, this place is IT!
Herrukot, our newly-built and comfortable holiday home is situated right on the shores of a large lake. It boasts views of the lake, the constantly-changing landscape and the Þjórsa River, and also has horses! The Northern Lights in winter are simply unforgettable! The location in the central Southern Region means that plenty of great day trips are possible, for example to Geysir, Gullfoss, Thingvellir National Park, the Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull Volcanoes, Reykjavik, the Vestmannaeyjar Islands, glaciers, cliffs with flocks of birds, and the highlands of Landmannalaugar and Thorsmörk. Reykjavik is an hour's drive away, and contains numerous museums, galleries, churches, shopping centres, and whale-watching options. We offer short and long rides (even for beginners) through the constantly-changing landscape, over mountains, and along the rivers and lakes. We make sure our guests get an individual treatment! Our farmhouse is 500 m away and we are happy to help with any questions. We'd be happy to give you a view of the Icelandic farm life. We have 300 sheep, 120 Iceland ponies, 70 cows and steers, as well as cats, rabbits, and a dog. Very family-friendly!
