About Nina Ward
Hi, My name is Nina and I have lived in Malaga since 1975 when I moved here with my parents from England (Isles of Scilly, Cornwall). I went to a local school here and soon picked up the language. At the moment my partner and I both teach English in Malaga and work as Cambridge examiners at the university here. We live nearby the apartment and are always on hand to help should you need anything while at the same time respecting your privacy. I am happy to show you round when you first arrive and take you shopping to the local supermarket upon arrival if you don't want to rent a car.
Nina Ward purchased this Apartment in 2003
Why Nina Ward chose El Candado
I inherited the property from my mother in 2003 and I have been renting it out for holidays since 2014. It was where I lived with my parents when we first came to Spain and is a real gem. The apartment is a home away from home and is very well-equipped and comfortable. There are lots of books, games and information on the local area. We have UK and Spanish TV as well as high speed wifi internet access.
What makes this Apartment unique
Many hours can be spent whiling away time on the large terrace enjoying the warm weather or having a barbecue. The views are wonderful of the bay and the mountains and you can even see Africa on clear autumn and winter evenings with the Pillars of Hercules at the entrance of the Mediterranean and the Rif mountains in Morocco. The apartment is situated in one of the most desirable residential areas of Malaga (El Candado) in the district of El Palo. It's merely 5 minutes drive to the motorway which links to routes to Granada, Sevilla and Cordoba as well as the wonderful Andalusian villages. I am more than happy to help you plan your itinerary for you trip and can recommend local tapas bars, restaurants and local museums and places of interest. My partner Hugh is a keen cyclist and is happy to recommend mountain routes for the energetic. There also some wonderful hikes around the surrounding countryside.

Lovely views from the balcony across Malaga bay.
We had a lovely stay in Nina's apartment this Easter. It was a perfect time to be in town with the hugely impressive processions and throngs of people. The weather was pretty well perfect too. Nina is an excellent host; she even took us shopping the moment we arrived, and that was quite late in the evening! The advice she provided regarding the best bus routes into town and our trip to Nerja made our short holiday even better. We will definitely be coming to Malaga again before too long.
Sun, sea and wonderful home comforts
My husband, two children aged 17 and 9 and I have just returned from the most wonderful holiday here! From the moment we arrived we felt at home! The terrace is huge and so amazing to sit in and look out over Malaga bay, have a cool drink and a bbq! If the heat gets too much then the air con and fans in the rooms are there to cool you down! There was nothing the flat didn't have - from a brillian kitchen to a very comfortable living room and bedrooms. The whole flat really did feel like home!! (Bar the Scottish weather) We loved walking down the hill and crossing over to Candado beach where you can reserve sun beds and buy drinks and snacks whilst looking out to sea!
All the beaches along from there to Malaga were fabulous! We walked to the city twice stopping off for refreshments or to have a dip in the sea or to have a shot of all the fantastic outdoor gyms!
The fresh fish was plentisome and the sardines cooked on a stick in front of you were cheap and brilliant!
We visited the Nerja Caves and the Alhambra and would definitely recommend both! Easily done as relaxing day trips!
I'm already checking my diary to see when I can return! Thank you so much to Nina for giving us the holiday of a lifetime and such happy memories to think back on during the cold Edinburgh nights that lie ahead!
Our second holiday here will not be our last!
Nina's house is so relaxing and peaceful and as I said in my last review has everything you could possibly need. We relaxed for the first few days by wandering down the hill and along the beach having some drinks and food along the way. We BBQ'd on the spacious terrace enjoying the beautiful views in the distance. We took a trip up to Granada for 2 overnights and visited the Alhambra which is a must. You can easily do this trip in one day. Just get up early and catch the bus from the bottom of the hill into Malaga (only 1.30 euros) and catch the next bus to Granada from the bus station. The journey lasts about 2hours 15 minutes and costs 22 euros. We also took a trip to Ronda which is just beautiful! If you just want relaxation then the beaches are not far from the house. We enjoyed El Morlaco Beach which is about 30 minutes walk away in the Malage direction. The restaurant there is very good and the staff are lovely too! We also went in the opposite direction to La Cala which has another pretty stretch of beach and more great food! So really whether you want to do nothing but relax or do a bit of exploring then Nina's house is hard to beat. We have a lot more of exploring to do so we need to go back !!! Nina will take you to the supermarket if you don't have a car and both she and Hugh are there if you have any questions about the area, restaurants etc. Another plus for us is all the exercise we get walking up and down the hill as we deliberately don't hire a car! Wish we were still there! Thank you once again Nina and Hugh for a wonderful holiday1
Cosy, well equipped apartment in quiet area
We stayed here for 4 weeks in January/February. The apartment was everything that we had hoped for - comfortable, well-equipped, warm on the cold evenings, and good wifi.
The owners, Nina and Hugh, live in the next apartment block, and were extremely friendly and helpful, taking us to the supermarket every week for the heavy shopping, as we didn't have the use of a car.
You can walk down to the beach/bus stops in about 15 minutes. The buses are excellent - cheap and regular, especially if you buy a card (tarjeta) and charge it up for 10 or 20 trips (for 20 trips it was about 16 euros). However, if you are not reasonably fit and mobile, you would really need to have a car as the hill is pretty steep.
I don't have any reservations at all about recommending this property. It was excellent value for money.
Had a fabulous 3 night stay at Nina's place, quiet, best beds ever and everything you would need for a short or longer break. Nina & Hugh can't do enough for you and make you feel at home right from the very moment you arrive. Highly recommend choosing to stay here if looking for a quiet location but easy access to everything in the area. Malaga city is easily accessible by bus just at the bottom of the hill. Will definitely stay again if we make it back over.
A Little Bit Of Paradise!
This is a homely accommodation with every single thing you could ever need on holiday whether it's for a week or a month.
The house is in a perfect location where you can feel just like a local. Say hello to Rhonda the dog across the road and say "hola" to everyone else you meet going up and down the hill. (There are 2 routes by foot that we found)
Read the contents of the black folder before you do anything and you can't go wrong.
If all you want is peace and tranquility you've got it in Nina's house. From here the possibilities are endless.
We walked down the shortest, steepest hill every day towards the beach and meandered along past the many restaurants popping in to a few en route. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced. We had delicious local fish, wonderful salads, fresh bread and good wine.
The bus service into Malaga is second to none arriving every 10 minutes, taking only 20 minutes and costing only 1 euro 30!
If you feel like a bit of excercise then take a walk into Malaga which will take about an hour depending on your pace.
Malaga itself is a wonderful combination of old and new. The Port is vibrant and cosmopolitan with cruise ships coming in and out. Why not have a cocktail and watch the world go by. Then take a walk through the park towards the old town. We loved the Roman Ruins and the Moorish Fort and Il Pimpi Restaurant and the shopping. There is so much to see and do in Malaga and it will take more than a few visits to fully appreciate it.
For the first time ever we traveled lightly with only cabin baggage. (It's amazing what you can fit into these small cases when you're not bringing toiletries and lots of shoes!) We bought everything we needed from Carrefore which Nina's friend took us to. (Nina and Hugh were on honeymoon at the time).
There were only 2 of us in the house but I could see that 4 can easily be accommodated and if you pull down the sofa bed there is room for 6.
There is an abundance of crockery and cooking utensils and a BBQ if you've been out and about all day and feel like "dining in" on the terrace. Put your music on and enjoy the view over Malaga bay.
We have been going to different parts of Spain for many years staying in 5 star hotels, private houses and apartments. Although Nina's house is not the grandest ( it's not at all expensive) we had the best sleeps ever! The double bed is so comfy and the room is kept cool by the ceiling fan and the air con in the lounge
This is a great place!
The apartment is situated on a hillside in the exclusive residential area of El Candado on the Eastern fringe of Malaga. It is one km away from the beaches of El Palo and Pedregalejo, well-known in the area for their excellent fish restaurants, beachside bars and lively nightlife. Early risers can still see the fishermen pulling in their nets! This is still very much a Spanish area, with local markets and shops. There are 3 championship-standard golf courses within a 30 minute drive and a 9-hole course 5 mins walk away. The property is within easy reach of the centre of Malaga with its many museums (Picasso, Thyssen, Pompidou, Russian, Car museum and Museum of modern art) as well as the historic old town and excellent restaurants, tapas bars and non-stop night life. The Andalusian jewels of Granada, Cordoba, Sevilla and Ronda are between 2 and 3 hours away and all make interesting day trips, as does Gibraltar. The coast also offers numerous activities for families: Selwo Safari Park, Tivoli World , Crocodile and wolf park, Sealife Centre and waterpark.
