About the property

4 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 2 shower rooms (1 with wheelchair access), sleeps 9

Set in the orchards of a fifteenth century manor house, the 'Laiterie' boasts fine views along the wooded valley of the River Touques in the beautiful Pays d'Auge area of Normandy. This architect-designed conversion of a former dairy incorporates traditional features and building materials in light and spacious rooms. The 'Laiterie' has a large garden of its own and a split-level terrace designed to catch the sun from early morning to late evening. It is an ideal place to relax and is also perfectly located to enjoy the beaches of the Côte Fleurie (Deauville, Trouville, Honfleur, etc.) and the attractive countryside and villages of the Pays d'Auge. Just a couple of miles from the market town of Pont L'Evêque, the property is also within easy reach of the historical cities of Caen and Rouen.

Babies and toddlers: We can provide (free of charge) 2 baby cots and 2 high chairs. All bedrooms are spacious enough to accommodate one baby cot. Babies and toddlers (if sleeping in a cot) do not count towards the maximum of 10 people in the house.

Home assistance and nursing services: A home assistance service provider operates in our area: it offers assistance in daily self-care tasks, such as eating, bathing, toileting, dressing, getting in and out of bed, etc. We can enquire about the cost of the service (about £25/hour) and book it for you should you wish.

Home nursing care can also be arranged for you. The cost is variable according to the medical care provided by the nurse (the cost should be reimbursed by the NHS when using a doctor’s prescription).

House cleaning services are available at a cost of €25 per hour.

Guestbook comments from the owner

“French perfection ..we found something very special: La Laiterie, a beautifully converted, half-timbered dairy in the grounds of the Manoir de Petagny. (…) We were sorry to leave this enchanting place and recommend it to those seeking a holiday off the beaten track in France” (Sydney Morning Herald, July 15/16, 2006).

“The downstairs room equipped for the disabled has been well thought out and is really excellent in all respects. It is the ‘best’ room we have found for a person using a wheelchair in ten years.” (May 2006)

“This house has been designed with a flare for taste and style and is one of the best we’ve stayed in over the years.” (Aug. 2006).

“We were amazed with the cleanliness and facilities of the house and its surroundings; the views are beautiful” (Sept. 2006)

“What a wonderful house, fantastic facilities with breathtaking views! La Laiterie has to be one of the best properties we’ve stayed at – for comfort, location, and gentle hospitality of the owners” (Jan.2007)

A magnificent property in an idyllic setting!

  • 5 of 5

We were very sorry to leave this wonderful property! It is located in several acres of private fenced garden surrounded by extensive views of fields, complete with a herd of Charolais cows who entertained us by walking down to a stream to drink and cool off several times a day! The property is definitely the best we have ever booked, and is beautifully appointed. The downstairs bedroom with ensuite wet room was perfect for my needs, and the rest of the family praised the upstairs facilities. It was wonderful to be able to choose where to sit and eat, inside or out, according to the heat of the day! The canopies and large outside table umbrella assisted us with that. Grandson Michael (3) was delighted with the paddling pool, trampoline and slide and also thoroughly enjoyed running around the large garden. The kitchen is well-appointed and equipped with all the crockery and cooking utensils you could possible need. A nearby Intermarche meant we could re-stock the fridge with food and liquid refreshment on a regular basis! We recommend this holiday property unreservedly.

Wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

We (two couples with 3 kids 16,16 and 18) stayed at the Laiterie for 4 days in may. The place is absolutely stunning. Beautifully renovated with lots of character and very comfortable and clean. Everything you need is available, including a vast dvd collection. Every evening we watched a movie, while enjoying the fire in the fireplace. The views from the house and the garden are amazing. In may the many apple trees are blossoming which made it even more beautiful. We loved the cows in the meadow next to the house, who came to see us every time we went into the garden. It is very rural, but the Intermarché and Pont l'Eveque are very close and there are a lot of interesting places in the area (Honfleur, Bayeux, Caen, Arromanche). It is the perfect place to spend a few days away from it all.

Accessible combination of traditional and modern features in a beautiful setting.

  • 5 of 5

My wife especially appreciated the many features that made it possible for a person with limited mobility to enjoy this stay. The combination of traditional and modern architecture is perfect. We were both very comfortable and greatly enjoyed our cow "neighbors" and the wildlife sightings. This is an excellent country stay in a very convenient location for a Normandy visit.

Very high quality accommodation, just right distance from nearby town. Good sized cozy social areas

  • 5 of 5

The house is lovely, and converted with such a high attention to detail. We all enjoyed the large social area round the blazing open fire and the view from the dining room - a very clever addition to the old building. The large lawn is perfect for recreation, and the south side terrace for relaxing and al fresco dining.

The quadruple bedroom was just wonderful, with a little pinch of Narnia about it, and I suspect people with younger families think the same, and all the doubles are spacious and attractively designed. The owners were a great help with local contacts for shops and really couldn't have done more to make our stay effortless and welcoming. A very well run holiday home, if only they could all be half as good as this one. Thank you.

Car: necessary

The Laiterie lies in a large orchard with open views across the fields and the Touques valley. The bustling and attractive market town of Pont L'Evêque with all necessary services (supermarket, bakeries, butchers, pharmacies, banks, cafés and restaurants) is only 5 minutes away.

The house is located only 16 minutes from the beach, chic shops and racecourse of Deauville and 19 minutes from the historic fishing port of Honfleur with its many seafood restaurants and art galleries. Lisieux, with its famous Basilica is only 15 minutes away.

Day trips can easily be made to the Normandy Landing Beaches, Bayeux, Caen, Rouen and the Suisse Normande.

Sporting activities that can be undertaken nearby (within 10 minutes driving) include: walking and cycling, swimming, tennis, fishing, horse riding, forest adventures (aerial ropeways for children and adults), test drive 4x4, sports cars & quads on nearby circuits, golf.

Other activities include of course spending time at the beach (or at the nearby lake in Pont l’Eveque), visiting the Cerza zoological zoo (some 1000 animals are spread over a 60 hectare park – certainly worth a visit!), visiting Honfleur (a must!), the landing beaches, Bayeux, Rouen and Caen with their museums (notably the Musée des Beaux Arts in Le Havre, the musée du Débarquement in Caen) or the closer museums in Honfleur (the butterfly museum is always a success with the little ones as is the Erik Satie museum for all ages). There are many chateaux that can be visited in the area, whether you are looking to retrace the steps of William the Conqueror (his birth home is in Falaise where the remnants of his castle are well worth a visit) or try one of the thematic museums (dolls and miniature furniture in the chateau de Vendeuvre, hot air balloons in the Chateau de Balleroy, the paleospace in Villers-sur-mer for the little ones to discover fossils,…).

The Laiterie is an ideal location for walking the many ancient paths and bridleways criss-crossing the valleys, hills and woods of the Pays d'Auge. It is also an ideal place for golf: Saint Julien/Calonne has its own golf course, one of the two Golf Barriere (the other one being in Deauville, at about 15km away) which are considered amongst the most beautiful in France. Both the golf course in our own village and that in Deauville offer an 18 hole (total length of 6 035 meter, PAR 72) and a 9 hole (total length 2 275 meters, PAR 33). Each course features a range of technical challenges to help you improve your play. The golf course in Deauville offers fast greens and difficult roughs (on the 18 hole) and a wooded course featuring real competition holes (on the 9 hole). Both courses are set on beautiful grounds, the golf course in Deauville on the slopes of Mount Canisy, overlooking the plains of the Pays d'Auge and the golf course in St Julien spreading over 90 hectares of listed grounds.
