Villa Kataraktis is named after the area of Symi in which it is located, not far from the harbour side with only twenty steps from sea level to its entrance. The house overlooks the village and the most picturesque part of the port with its old clock tower and the yachts. It has four bedrooms, two of them upstairs and two in the ground floor apartment. There is a living room, a bathroom and a kitchen on each floor.
The downstairs apartment offers complete privacy with its patio. The living room as well as the kitchen have direct access to this delightful outside area. The Neo-Classical Villa Kataraktis, built in 1880, was completely redecorated in the 1980s. It is one of the most beautiful houses on the island and equally a splendid example of this architecture in the traditional Symian style.
Villa Kataraktis sleeps up to eight guests.
I'm living in Hamburg, Germany. I worked as a financial and economic journalist as well as editor in chief for various German newspapers and magazines.
Villa Kataraktis is situated very close to the lower part of Symi (Gialos) with the port and its various shops. At the same time it crouches at the upper edge of the village in complete quietness. The view from the front of the house is spectacular overlooking both the village with ist harbor and the sea. The land at the back of the house stretches into the hillside of the island. I bought this magnificent property immediately after I fell in love into Symi when I first visited it some 30 years ago.
The villa is simply magnificent: ample, very well decorated, cosy, fully equipped, stunning view on the port. We spent a wonderful time all the family. It is situated near the centre of Symi but a bit higher, which makes it less hot, more ventilated. The owner and his representative in the island were very helpful, taking care, for instance, of luggage to bring them to the ferry.
Symi is not just an island - it’s paradise to all who visit this magical place.
The upper village of Chorio with its colourful houses clustered on the hillside, the remote hidden beaches, the picturesque harbour and the charming humour of the people make Symi a very special experience. The famous Kali Strata with its 380 steps winding up from the harbour to Chorio is a must for every visitor. History is all around at the top of the hill - in the ruins of the old town with its museum of Symiot life, at the reputed tomb of King Nireus and at the site of the Castle built by the Knights of St John.
Harbour life at day and night is great fun. Bars and boutiques line the seaside. And between the traditional fish tavernas and the luxury restaurants there is a wide choice of places to eat for the discerning visitor. Enjoying a cocktail whilst watching the yachts drop anchor in the harbour is pure pleasure and makes one feel part of an exclusive lifestyle - Symi pure.
