A sunny villa with a unique atmosphere indeed
I can join most of the comments written by others. The house is well worth a longer visit. Without repeating the other reviews I shall only indicate what pleased us most/least.
1. The kitchen and dining area (5 stars)
We were only 4 people, but even so we were delighted about the huge number of pots and pans, plates, glasses, cutlery and so on. Also gear one wouldn't expect is available, like a yoghurt maker, a good mixer, a milk steamer (for cappuccino)... This also gave us the opportunity to invite some family from Switzerland for a good meal without having to wash up after every serving. We cherished the big dining table! If you rent this house, I'd suggest you bring salt and other herbs you frequently use; also bring some tablets or powder for the dishwasher. The coffeemakers require coarsely ground coffee and paper filters.
2. The structure of the house and its location (5 stars)
It's an old house with solidly built walls. We arrived in the middle of a heat wave and managed to cope without air conditioning. It being a big house, we could easily find a place that remained cooler (the balcony for breakfast, the garden table for dinner...).
The rooms are tastefully decorated, the wooden floor is beautiful (we left our shoes downstairs). It's a house that needs to be treated with care.
We had opted for a big house in order to be able to invite our daughter and her friend from Switzerland for the weekend. There is accomodation for 7/8 people. The renting price includes 2 persons. Every next person pays 10 euro per night + 10 euro for linens. The house and kitchen are well suited to make a really nice reunion possible.
The location is super: a small supermarket, a butcher's and a baker's shop, the tourist office, a nice restaurant, the bus station, the starting point of walking trails are all a few steps away. We also loved the chime of the church bells.
Wifi was a problem (the reason why I give 4 stars). To start with the signal in Sankt Märgen is not always very strong. And after a couple of days we failed to login altogether. We were helped by the tourist office, who gave us a pass word to be used there. It did mean, however, that all of us had to run to the tourist office every time we needed specific information or wanted to contact family and friends.
4. The local contactperson
Mrs Bachmann was really helpful, showed us around the house, gave clear information, and could easily be reached.
We actually stayed for two weeks in this house in summer 2011. It's an excellent place to spend the holidays. The house is well decorated. The location is excellent, with a car you can reach Freiburg in 30 minutes and you have lots of nice towns around. It's a good place to stay to discover the black forest. There's also a nice cafe, supermarket and bakery around the corner. Walk around and you will discover few nice surprises :)
Wonderful holiday house in a lovely village
We stayed here for a week in June 2013 and had a wonderful holiday. We were a group of 4 adults and 3 young children and the house was spacious, clean and full of character. The children particularly loved playing with the lovely wooden toys in the lounge/library area. Sometimes holiday homes are small and therefore you want to spend most of the time exploring - the house is so spacious and has such a great atmosphere that even the kids were content just exploring the house. The weather was beautiful so the adults had many relaxing evenings eating dinner and watching the sunset (& occasional thunderstorm) on the balcony. The house is very well equiped - especially the kitchen. St Margen is a lovely village with plenty of amenities and a great play area for children in the woods. We felt that there is so much to do in the black forest (especially for children) that we will have to come back and visit again in the future - really we should have stayed for at least 2 weeks as there was so much to do near by we didn't even get to see the northern black forest! We particularly enjoyed the toboggan (Rodelbahn) at Todnau and swimming in Lake Titisee. The Badeparadis near Neustadt was also very good (waterslides, relaxing swimming pool). I would recommend the holiday home to groups of friends and families with children of any age.
A beautiful holiday
St Margen is a beautiful location with great walks at your doorstep. The village itself is very pretty. Ideal for a relaxing walking holiday. Freiburg is also great and a short drive away.
The accomodation itself is very spacious, clean and bright - just as shown in the pictures.
