Lindsay Phillips purchased this apartment in 2005
I chose Vence because I found it to be so charming pretty and unspoilt and the apartment because of the ambiance and lovely open view of mountains and sea, and it is full of luminous light. As Henri Matisse wrote to poet Louis Aragon “When I realized I would see that light every morning, I could not believe my good fortune,” We are only 200 metres into the heart of Vence 'Old City' and only 25 minutes from Nice and 20 minutes to the airport. It is a bonus to be surrounded by the history, art galleries and atmosphere, not to mention the wonderful fresh produce and local markets. Fresh natural spring water since Roman times and there is nothing nicer than walking into the medieval city to choose your fresh hot bagette and croissants each morning and eating them on the balcony! And because you don't need to get the car out, it is much more relaxing and you don't have to worry about driving after dinner!
The apartment has a welcoming ambiance, the benefit of sun all afternoon and the great location: You are in the centre of historic Vence life, 200 metres from the medieval walled 'city' and can experience Vence as it is - a charming, bustling and authentic little French town with a lovely astmosphere which has managed to remain unspoilt.
We recently spent two weeks in this lovely apartment and could have happily stayed longer. What a wonderful surprise - the pictures do not do it justice. It is full of character, clean, bright, beautifully decorated and far more spacious than we imagined. We felt as though we were living in a very roomy apartment. Perhaps the most outstanding feature is the view from the balcony - we were mesmerized by it. It was endlessly interesting and the perfect place for an evening glass of wine and dinner. The other great thing about this apartment is it's proximity to the walled village and the town square. We walked to and from the village market numerous times every day. We did not rent a car and we were happy do our explorations by foot or by the very reasonable bus system. Lindsay was extremely helpful and patiently answered our many queries. We loved it - this is a special place you will want to return to!
We are from Germany and stayed 13 days in this charming apartment. The good comments from other people are really true; there is nothing to add. W`ll come back again soon.
But something is to remark. The traffic at the coast (Monaco, Nice and Cannes is extremly high. Unfortunately we became at the Airport a very great, new and long car, because the ordered middle-class was out. So it was difficult to drive and to find a parking place. I think middle class cars are here more practical.
A bright, comfortable and beautifully decorated apartment, very close to the medieval centre of Vence. Lots going on in Vence - daily markets, super little shops selling local produce, many good restaurants and, of course, the beautiful chapel designed by Matisse. We joined the "fete of the fountains" where each fountain is decorated with flowers and musicians parade, playing traditional music. At every fountain the parade stops to drink the water. The local people made us feel very welcome and the afternoon finished with drinks and canapés in the 'Place des Jardins' (the main square by tourist office). Vence is super, a REAL French town, not just a tourist spot. We will hopefully return soon!
We are a couple based in Ithaca, in New York State's Finger Lakes region. We’ve just returned to the U.S. from five weeks in Italy and France.
While in Vence, we walked between 7 and 10 miles most days, first by exploring Vence and its environs thoroughly, then by hiking to such nearby destinations as Saint Paul de Vence. We also took advantage of the excellent regional bus network.
When “at home,” we spent much of our time on the balcony, which affords marvelous views of the surrounding cityscape and mountains, as well as an essentially anonymous window on the activity below, at street level.
We found the apartment completely accommodating and enjoyable. It afforded a perfect opportunity to get a week-long sense of a small, lively, diverse, and down-to-earth Provencal community. Plus, there are so many readily-accessible cultural gems, such as the Matisse Chapel in Vence and the Maecht Foundation and the Folon Chapel in Saint Paul de Vence; so many hikes with stunning views; and so many options for indoor and outdoor dining and for picnics at peaceful stopping points when hiking.
The apartment immediately made us feel truly at home. The flat’s décor reflects the highly refined tastes and interests of the owner. The apartment readily converts from fully open to the balcony on a sunny afternoon or a starry evening, to fully shuttered for peace, quiet, and privacy. We felt thrilled by the flat and its views the moment we arrived on 6 Oct, and very heavy-hearted when our itinerary forced us to leave on 13 Oct.
Our host has always been communicative, from our initial request for a reservation through a message we received this morning asking for confirmation that our security deposit has been returned by VRBO/Home Away (it has). We’ve never dealt with a property owner so informed about the region and so proactive and thorough in providing maps, information, and practical tips in advance of a stay.
For this couple intensely interested in modern art, architecture, history, cuisine, wine, the outdoors, and photography, this proved an ideal base for exploration, cultural enrichment, and rejuvenation prior to four rugged final days of traveling home to Central New York State.
For anyone with similar interests, we highly recommend this apartment and its extraordinary owner.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our week in this comfortable, bright, inviting apartment. Other people have already said everything, so we would just like to reiterate all their good comments. It was a wonderful base for our extensive explorations of the region in our rental car, and we were relieved to be able to find parking upon coming "home," either in the handy little pay lot across the street or in the blue zone spaces. Everything worked well in the apartment, and we had everything we needed. We loved eating our morning croissants and baguettes on the balcony and enjoying the view at cocktail hour or any other time that we were there. Lindsay did a great job with directions and information, and there were no unpleasant surprises awaiting us when we arrived at the clean, lovely apartment. We also enjoyed the town of Vence and would not hesitate to enjoy a stay at this apartment in the future.
We have just returned home after spending another 2 weeks' holiday, once again in Lindsay's beautiful apartment in our favourtie town of Vence.
The welcoming & spacious apartment just makes us feel like we're coming home - this has been our third visit. It is wonderfully comfortable, tastefully decorated and everything you could possibly want has been catered for. There are many "nooks & crannies" and heaps of storage space: everything has been thought of including a stack of information and brochures, bus timetables etc. that make it so easy to find your way around and plan wonderful adventures.
Once again 'The Balcony' was where we spent many wonderful hours in the beautiful light, morning, noon & night looking out over the surrounding scenery and eating delicious, simple meals.
We never tire of walking through the Old Village numerous times daily enjoying the markets, art studios, the many patisseries, the variety of interesting shops, studying the menus of the abundant
restaurants and generally soaking up the ambience of the culture and history of this truly enticing part of the world.
One of our favourite walks is down through the woods to St.Paul de Vence and after spending a couple of hours there lapping up the delights, taking the walk back to the apartment. It is a beautiful walk and well worth taking.
We use the bus service to Nice and then further on to other interesting places eg Monaco, Eze, Menton,Cannes and Marseille to name a few. The fares are extremely reasonable and the buses very regular. A great way to get from place to place, if like us you are too scared to drive.
There are too many things to go on about - it would take too long but if you want to visit the South of France and enjoy a wonderfully relaxing holiday in a beautiful part of the world why not take your break in Vence and Lindsay's apartment!
The beautifully preserved medieval hillside town of Vence (alt.320m) dates back to Roman times.
