We were happy to stay in this authentic, attractive home in the center of Monschau--at a good price!
Wanting to visit Monschau for several days, we were lucky to find this property. We got a lot for the price--a home with three floors of authentic and charming rooms: first floor has two toilets (one with tub), a shower room, a dining area, and a kitchen. It was a pleasure to cook and eat with a view in the heart of Monschau. Up the spiral staircase for the elegant sitting room and den, with a sweet garden off of it (apertifs, anyone?). Up one more flight for the three bedrooms. Quiet at night. Kitchen is well-equipped. We did not have much luck getting WIFI to work. Bathrooms are fine, but it is the house itself and the area which are truly lovely. And Manfred, who runs the property, was kind and flexible and responded in a timely manner to any questions or requests we had. He even got in our car to guide us to parking, so helpful in this small maze of a city. It was a perfect fall getaway, and we were happy to have had the experience of feeling like locals by staying in this charming house.
Not so nice
Our stay in Monschau was great but the place we rented was disappointing. The wifi didn't work (so leave laptop and Netflix at home) and the communication with the owner was next to nothing. The towels (kitchen and bath) were smelly, old and covered in stains. Yuck! We normally use such towels for our pets!! When we requested fresh towels it took the owner a whole day to provide us with three more dirty towels...
Also lacking was basic information like nearest doctor, vet or an explanation about the German waste recycling system. Do these owners really want to rent out their property?
We can not accept the evaluation. The Wifi works perfectly. Perhaps the smartphone of the ladies has problems. It was a rainy day and the ladies called on only for new towels. We thought it was for the wet dog, because the ladies weren´t in the house. All important information is in German and English in a large portfolio in the dining room. The women have apparently not read. Oh yes, that the wet dog has polluted house and garden, the ladies have unfortunately not mentioned. Cleaning took an extra two hours! These ladies no more. Please look our other evaluations !!
Ostern in Monschau / Spring Break in Moschau
We had a fantastic week at Oberer Muhlenberg 4, Monschau. The house, town and surrounding area were all great.
The house provided well for the 6 (4 adults and 2 children) of us who stayed and we had plenty of room to spare. The third floor garden terrace was particularly special with its views over the beautiful town and castle.
Manfred was a very helpful and gracious host, he kindly showed us around town and made great recommendations on what to see and where to eat. Zum Haller served excellent food and Peter, the owner, helped teach our boys German, in return we taught him how to make a Perfect Manhattan!
Monschau is an interesting town with great walks around the town and along the Rur valley as well as many other activities and museums. The Eifel is a beautiful area and especially nice for hiking.
Burg Sicht is a lovely, comfortable and memorable place to stay and one we would highly recommend to anyone.
Lovely house/town; good for young children
This house was the perfect place to experience Monschau. Situated right in the heart of the old town, you can walk everywhere. The sun garden was wonderful, as we could sit in the yard and look at the church steeple and castle while our children took their naps. The house may seem intimidating to those with young children since there are 4 floors, but there are doors or baby gates on every level. Plus, the garden was so beneficial for them to let some energy out.
I definitely recommend this house, and Manfred was a perfect host. We plan to visit again very soon!
Lovely house, beautiful town, well worth a visit
Lovely house with accommodation over 4 floors. The owner was very helpful prior to the visit and very welcoming upon arrival. The town is beautiful and definitely worth spending the time wandering around. Things to know before visiting... parking is about 2 minute walk away and you have to pay 3Euros a day (ticket for duration of stay can purchased from tourist information, which the owner will help you with). Most German cafes/restaurants/shops will not take card payments, nor will the cheap supermarkets. The ATM machines charge about 5 euros for cash withdrawal, so take plenty of cash with you! Watch out for the speed traps!!
