About Charlotte Wreaves

My husband and I are very fond of hill walking with our three dogs and first became interested in buying a property in the area to go hill walking along the beautiful coastal paths. The area was such a departure from our day to day lives in London yet only two and a half hours away (on a good run) making it possible to use the house for short breaks. Since buying the property in 2005 we have had 4 children and moved to rural Herefordshire. Our hill walking has had to take a bit of a back seat although even our 3 year old twins have walked to Golden Cap a few times and over to Eype too on the promise of lunch at the excellent cafe and our home life is now far more remote than the Guardhouse but now we enjoy the property for the beaches which the children adore, even on windy days in February!

Charlotte Wreaves purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Charlotte Wreaves chose Dorset

The Guardhouse appealled to us straight away because of it's history and it's unbelieveable setting. Finding an old character property close to the sea is much harder than you might think and beleive me we have been up and down the coast looking for them. The Guardhouse is also much larger inside than it looks and is a very comfortable home from home with lots of room for all the family.

What makes this cottage unique

The views from the front bedrooms, particularly the double bedroom up the cliff and across to the sea are wonderful and on warmer nights having the window ajar and being rocked to sleep by the sound of the waves is lovely.

The Guardhouse was lovely - very serene, tasteful nautical furnishings, unspoilt traditional style but spacious and uncluttered. Glorious to sit on either of the patios (front or back) looking over the rooftops of fishermen's cottages and listening to the breaking waves. Wonderful views over the hill opposite and the sea (from bedrooms only). Seatown is a delightful hamlet with a relaxed shingle beach, not crowded, a few beach fires, dogs ambling around and fishermen The only shame of Seatown is the sprawling mobile home parks which are just out of view. Doesn't spoil the immediate vicinity of the pub, the house and the beach but it's hard to understand how so such a big development could have been allowed. One discrete site would be fine but they cover three fields between Seatown and Chideock and are very visible from the anywhere on the hill opposite. I guess they bring revenue but much more effort could have been made to blend them with the local environment. Apart from that, a delightful place.

Owner's Response: I am glad that you enjoyed the house and the views. As you say it is a shame that there is a static mobile home park in Seatown, however, it is very quite and low key with no entertainment or leisure facilities and as such we have found that it doesn't impede our enjoyment of the cottage and the area. When we were looking for a coastal holiday home 12 years ago we searched from the Suffolk coast to the west Devon coast. Unfortunately, with very few exceptions, such as millionaires row in West Wittering there is hardly any of our beautiful coastline not covered with static caravans or dated seafront developments. We hope to welcome you back one day. Charlotte

Excellant accomodation. Set in an ideal location.

  • 5 of 5

After searching for a property for a family 'get together' for 7 adults, we were recommended this ideal property by a neighbour.

It's well furnished with everything you could possibly need and plenty of room.

the lounge was used for reminiscing around the log fire, whilst the dining room being transformed into a card room.

lucky enough to enjoy a rain free stay with coffee on the patio with the sound of the sea in the background. Perfect.

Fantastic home from home holidaywith amazing views

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was incredibly well equipped, very clean and well maintained. The location was perfect..sea...good pub with good food (and gin fizz). ..plenty of walks on your doorstep... The stair gates were invaluable and well positioned. The beach was apparently 'dog free' but everyone had dogs so our dog had a fantastic holiday too walking over the hills.

Freshly baked apple cake form Morcombelake worth a trip and the walk to the National Trust cafe Downhouse farm was definitely worth the walk.

Totally relaxing break - hope to stay again soon....

Home from home

  • 5 of 5

As a family The Guardhouse is perfect for us. We love the proximity to the beach, the pub next door and the stunning walks. Set between Bridport and Lyme Regis there is plenty for us to see and do. The cottage itself is always well presented and booking is straightforward. These key principles keep us coming back every year making it a real home from home.

A well equipped and welcoming dog-friendly house

  • 5 of 5

The house was very clean and as described in the info.

It was easy to keep the dogs in the kitchen after walks by using the stair gate provided. Great walks from the door and good food at the local pub.

I had not been aware that dogs were not allowed on the beach at Seatown even in the winter but this did not spoil our visit as there were plenty of other walks.

The dog ban did not seem to be being observed as we saw plenty of dogs and their owners enjoying the beach!

Seatown is a charming Hamlet on the South West Dorset Coast. Seatown and the surrounding area are mostly under National Trust control and designated as an area of outstanding natural beauty. In addition to the beach and the wonderful walking there are also local shops available in the pretty village of Chideock (1 mile). Bridport (3 miles) is the nearest town, with street markets on Wednesday and Saturday. The beautiful seaside town of Lyme Regis, steeped in history is also within easy reach. In the surrounding area there are plenty of attractions for all tastes from children's farms, water parks and a donkey sanctuary to beautiful gardens and country houses. The opportunity for great walking is huge with many guests returning year after year to explore the area. The famous Golden cap, the highest point on the South Coast is only 45 minutes walk from the house. For those who don't wish to move from Seatown itself there is a small seasonal shop plus a pub that serves excellent meals.
