Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 5-6 comfortably

The Meadow House is named for the expansive meadow it is sited on, and for it’s amazing views and surrounding abundance of natural beauty and wildlife.

Located in the rural Cascade mountains, (1 mile from the Rogue River, 28.9 miles from Crater Lake south entrance), this 2-story house is nestled between old timber forest woodlands and meadow. At the end of a private drive, it rests on 100 private acres of Protected Wildlife Habitat Area. Available during all four seasons, the Meadow House is as spectacular in the snow covered winter as it is in the warm weather of summer.

INTERIOR. The Meadow House (part of the historic Katydid Ranch of the early 1900's), has been rebuilt with custom details throughout and is a lovely way to enjoy extra creature comforts indoors while taking in gorgeous views of meadows and mountains through its many windows. Hardwood floors throughout, custom cabinetry, granite counters, large tiled bathrooms, a wood-burning fireplace (living room) and a large bright kitchen (set up for convenience of meal preparation) provide quality comfort.

Take your pick of the upstairs spacious master (king sized bed-new and very comfortable) or the downstairs corner bedroom (queen sized bed-also new and comfy) which is located next to a full bath. Additionally, there is a small private sleeping room located off the upstairs enclosed balcony which we dub the "eagle's nest". It's a small loft room with a double/full bed and works for a single person or two teenagers that share a bed. The Eagle's nest is small and probably not comfortable for an adult couple.

The house is in pristine condition, designed for comfort, and offers views all around. The wrap around deck is great for reading, relaxing, or barbecuing. It's also wonderful at day end for enjoying a glass of wine and waiting for the wildlife to visit.

OUTSIDE. Just outside the front door, guests will find the entrance to the “pinecone trail” which leads up a small hill to a secluded sanctuary perfect for star-gazing (the night skies are magnificent!) or side-by-side hammock-style relaxation, and a cozy camp-fire pit. It's a very short walk back to the house if you decide to spread out your tablecloth for a romantic picnic on the knoll. Throughout the summer, the ranch vegetable and berry gardens are available to guests. Pick enough for your for a special treat of sweet strawberries or wild blackberries when in season.

WINTER. On a winter day, you might see wild turkeys and deer browsing in the meadow and then catch the elk coming in for moonlight grazing after dusk. The winter months bring clear cold crisp weather and there is nothing more gorgeous than when the fresh blanket of snow covers the meadow. That’s when it’s time to cozy up to the wood-burning fireplace and relax as you watch the gentle white flakes fall.

Crater Lake National Park offers free ranger-guided snow-shoe walks on weekends and even loan you the snow-shoes! Snow mobiling and cross-country skiing are popular too. We love spotting all of the animal tracks in the snow!

SPRING. Wildflowers, bulbs, and by the end of May, the Iris are blooming. The meadow grasses are lush with springs showers and warming weather. A gorgeous time of year to visit.

SUMMER. During the summer months the meadow is shared with the ranch horses for daytime grazing who return to the barn at day end just in time for other wildlife visitors to arrive.

FALL. End of summer visitors are invited to indulge in the abundance of wild-blackberry picking (usually beginning by mid-August and lasting through most of September) If you can actually get the sweet berries in a bucket (supplied) you might decide to make a pie later on, or serve them over ice-cream. Yum! If not, just eat them off the bush and enjoy!

Relaxing is an important all-season activity, but not to the exclusion of hiking the numerous trails, bird/wildlife spotting, horse shoes, mountain biking, lawn golf, visiting the ponds, or checking out the old Boise-Cascade tree nursery on the property.

Guests are welcome, if they wish, to join us at the barn at feeding time to enjoy that special time of day with the horses and say hello to the owners whose home is also situated on the meadow; close enough to be available for any unexpected needs and far enough for privacy.

About Barbara Long

Owners Barbara and Dan fell in love with the historic 100 acre Katydid Ranch at first sight and soon after went about restoring its two homes, barn, bunkhouse, outbuildings, and beautiful grounds.

A couple of years down the highway, they completed their move from California, and now live in paradise full time...just across the meadow from the Meadow House. The Meadow House, the first of the renovations to be completed, is a welcome retreat for guests.

We hope you love it as much as we do!

Barbara Long purchased this house in 2006

Why Barbara Long chose Oregon

The original house (where the Meadow House now stands) was first used as the ‘half-way to Crater Lake’ overnight lodging. Its first owner, Katy Grieve, welcomed horse and buggy travelers who had left Medford for the first day of travel, arriving at Katydid Ranch in time to rest the horses and have a meal before dark. The next morning they made the 2nd leg of the journey to Crater Lake. As Barbara and Dan went about restoring the ranch, it seemed only natural to make the Meadow House a vacation rental.

The 100 acre property is a Protected Wildlife Habitat Area where birds, deer, elk, fox, turkeys, raccoons and other wildlife call home. Some of the property highlights are two large ponds found deep in the woods, creeks, springs, meadows, hiking trails and a mixed forest and woodlands of conifers, Pacific Madrone and broadleaf. In the spring, wildflowers are abundant in the meadows and under the trees, and the fruit tree blossoms are gorgeous. Shining through the woodlands are nature's stars, the dogwood trees, abundant with white flowers. At the end of May, wild daisies create a blanket of white and the forest floors are lush with triliums and the most beautiful variety of wildflowers. Naturalized iris, from the original ranch along with some new additions, create a rainbow of color the first couple weeks of June. The intent is for guests to experience the renewing energy of natural surroundings, the amazing clarity of light, and the majestic beauty of the Cascades.

A beautiful home and a spectacular experience.

A+ stay in our book.

Barbara was waiting for us when we arrived to welcome us and give us some pointers on the property and the area, which was much appreciated. We expected an older farm house, but we were blown away with the home. It's beautiful inside and out, which made us feel comfortable to relax and enjoy the stay, albeit brief. We would definitely recommend the Katydid Ranch to all travellers looking to get away. Although it's a great jumping off point for Crater Lake, it can also be an opportunity to get out of a city and look at the stars or listen to the sounds of the night with no cars or street noise. If we're anywhere close to Prospect again, we'll definitely be back!

Wellness Luxus im Wald

  • 5 of 5

Einfach traumhaft entzueckend! Wir kommen sicherlich wieder zurueck. Oregon Dreaming !

We loved our stay at Meadow House. This property is truly a breath of fresh air.

  • 5 of 5

The Meadow House is gorgeous and so comfortable. The furniture is well appointed and the home is stocked with all the comforts of home. The property is located only 30 miles from Crater Lake. It was so nice to return to Meadow House and it's peaceful and beautiful surroundings each day. We loved sitting out on the deck and enjoying the views of the meadow and mountains. There are nice little hiking trails and a star gazing site right on the property. The morning we left we saw a herd of elk right outside our window eating apples and plums from trees in the yard. It is just a gorgeous property away from people and traffic.

Barbara and Dan have made an effort to really cater to their guests. In the house they have provided information and books on local points of interest as well as birds and wildlife. The Meadow House is so relaxing and interesting that it could be a destination itself.

Bonny and Dick.

Large and beautiful house in a bucolic setting

  • 5 of 5

Meadow house is really lovely- homey, comfortable, clean, beautifully maintained, and air conditioned. And much much more!

We had a long weekend gathering to attend our brother's wedding, and it was hard to get me to leave the house. I kept sketching all of the barns, and the horses!

Thanks for a wonderful stay.

The breath-taking views and spectacular wilderness of Crater Lake is what first brings many visitors to this part of the Cascades. Crater Lake National Park South (west) entrance is a beautiful 30 minute drive through gorgeous old timber forestland (stopping along the way at Beckie's Café, in Union Creek, for a meal or homemade pie is a must). Once here, visitors discover the many outdoor recreational activities the area has to offer such as the origins of the historic Rogue River, it's Natural Bridge, Avenue of the Giant Boulders, Pearsony Falls, Mill Creek Falls, Barr Creek Falls, and the Gorge...all within a couple of miles of the Meadow House.

Surrounding scenic and outdoor attractions are an easy reach away... River rafting is a popular activity on this part of the Rogue (take a day or 1/2 trip, put-in 15 minutes away). World-class fishing in the Rogue is minutes away (guide service referrals are available upon request, we know the best!). The Fish Hatchery is very interesting to see and 15 min. away. Boating and water skiing at Lost Creek Lake and Marina are 13 minutes west. 11 stunning waterfalls are within the immediate Cascade area and offer great hike-in opportunities. Serious hikers and mountain bikers have plenty of area to explore using this property as the first leg of an adventure. Bird watchers will find an abundance of bird-life, and of course, wildlife viewers will be situated in a Protected Wildlife Habitat area.

Numerous wineries are within an hour or so drive and visitors often enjoy making a day of touring the local wineries.

Off-roaders can utilize the many miles of designated OH trails which have several entries, on Hwy 62, within a couple of miles from the property, and are skill-rated (we have maps and more info. available).

Diamond Lake which is known for outdoor recreation and snow mobiling is northeast on Hwy 62 past Crater Lake.

In the other direction, southwest, is Mt. Ashland Ski Resort. The town of Ashland (nestled in the Siskiyou Mountain foothills) is home to the famous Shakespeare Festival and is a gorgeous little town of shops, boutiques, parks, and wonderful eateries. The historic town of Jacksonville (a thriving old gold mining town) is an hour west.

The nearby town of Prospect (3.5 miles up the highway) is an interesting town to visit as well. An old logging center, the town offers some rural charm with the original old bar and café, The Trophy Room, named for the many taxidermied wildlife collection which watch over the pool tables, shuffle board and karaoke bar. The historic Prospect Hotel offers a signature prime rib dinner for summer dining, and the Prospect Pizza parlor has, yep, great pizza.

During the winter, cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing is a popular sport in the Crater Lake National Park. Ranger guided snow shoe tours are available on weekends. Snow play is always fun and the Meadow House a few sleds to borrow for fast slopes!
