About the property

Just remodeled!!! Immaculate 1 Bedroom, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 2, new deck.

The quaint “Hershey Cabin”, originally owned as a hunting cabin by members of the Hershey (chocolate) family, is nestled on the lush side of the Lake Arrowhead, in historic Arrowhead Villas. It is situated about 1 mile south of Lake Arrowhead Village at an elevation of 5,500 feet. This is not just another rental house, but rather a very quiet, inviting, immaculate and comfortable mountain cabin. If the Hershey Cabin is booked, try our exquisite cottage - the five star rated Burnt Mill Canyon Cottage, by typing 634044 in the search box (above, under the VRBO logo), and click "search".

The Hershey Cabin is the perfect place for a romantic weekend get-away or for an extended vacation. Totally renovated a couple of years ago, it has been tastefully decorated to make it the perfect retreat for a private getaway. Every piece of furniture and art has been hand selected by the owners who have a passion for incorporating comfort and elegance in home decor. It is furnished with both antiques and modern furnishings, blended together, to provide the creature comforts of modern day while maintaining the old fashioned warmth of a vintage Lake Arrowhead cabin.

During the renovation we basically went down to the studs and rebuilt much of the cabin from the ground up – yet we saved the original footprint and the rustic knotty pine and redwood inside, so that the cabin still has that old fashioned charm. The cabin has a beautifully hand crafted rock fireplace, massive pine mantel, porcelain/slate tile floors with traditional wool rugs, central forced air heating, dual pane windows and fully insulated walls and ceilings. Above the fireplace is a 40 inch high definition, smart flat screen TV (we have high speed internet/Wi-Fi and Netflix and a DVD player), but no cable TV. The living room is a perfect place to snuggle up by the fire and read or watch a movie.

The bathroom is brand new - with lots of tile, granite and a frameless glass shower. The kitchen has been completely remodeled with gorgeous granite counter tops, new cupboards and stainless steel appliances. The kitchen is fully equipped with all of the amenities of home. Throughout the cabin, we completely replaced all wiring, light fixtures, pipes, drains and even the water heater.

The bedroom has knotty pine walls and ceiling, and the view out the windows makes you feel as if you are nestled in a tree house. The bed has a new memory foam mattress along with beautiful cozy bedding. Outside the bedroom is a brand new wrap-around deck, with bistro tables and chairs where you can enjoy a glass of wine or a meal!

In front of the cabin we built a retaining wall to allow easy parking along with concrete steps and a wrought iron banister up to the front door. The cabin is situated on a very quiet road and is easy to find at night, as it has a lighted address. It is surrounded by beautiful firs, pines, maples and cedar trees, along with a nicely landscaped yard. The siding of the cabin is classic craftsman style shake.

Lake Arrowhead is a private lake. Unlike many cabins, WE PROVIDE A LAKE PASS so you have access to hike the trails around the lake, use the two beach clubs, and fish from the shore or use the Arrowhead Lake Association fishing dock.

The Lake Arrowhead area is a little hidden gem, with a quaint village, dinner theater (Tudor House), movie theater, wonderful local restaurants and various shopping opportunities. If you are looking for a romantic get-away, or just a place to relax and have fun, this is just the place. Lake Arrowhead celebrates all four seasons - warm summer days, fall colors, snow in the winter, and a beautiful spring.

About Paul and Janice

My wife and I were married in 1975. We love going on vacations, especially to the mountains - both of our grandparents owned cabins in either Big Bear or Crestline. We both recently retired! My wife's fields of expertise are education/teaching and interior design. I was a security consultant and do property management on the side. We love the outdoors - hiking, kayaking, biking etc.

Paul and Janice purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Paul and Janice chose Lake Arrowhead

We were visiting Lake Arrowhead Village getting an ice tea at MacDonald when our son spotted an ad for a one bedroom cabin at a local realtor's office. We weren't actually looking for a cabin but this one quickly peaked our interest. After checking out over 50 cabins... we chose this one because we liked the old cabin feel, the quiet location, and the lush trees on the property.

The property, which was originally owned by members of the Hershey (chocolate) Family as a simple hunting cabin, was in major need of repair. My wife and I spent the summer and fall remodeling and renovating the cabin from the ground up. We saved the redwood and knotty pine interiors which give it the classic feel.

We also own and rent out the gorgeous BURNT MILL CANYON COTTAGE in Lake Arrowhead. You can find the cottage by searching VRBO or HomeAway for property #634044.

What makes this cabin unique

At about 1/2 the price of a room at Lake Arrowhead Resort & Spa you get your own, gorgeous, immaculate, quiet, private one bedroom cabin. The kitchen is completely equipped with new dishes, glasses, pots, pans etc. The appliances are all new, including the dishwasher and washer and dryer. For those of you who are skiers, we have a ski rack in the back yard. If you just want to sit back and read, we have all sorts of magazines for your reading pleasure.

Lake Arrowhead is a private lake, and to use the lake, the beach clubs, and the lake trail, you must have a "Beach Club Membership" pass. We have the pass for your use. In addition, we have an "Adventure Pass" which allows you to park your car while you go hiking in the San Bernardino Forest. For those of you who like to hike, we have 3 books on hiking in the San Bernardino Mountains, as well as maps and other information.

Upon arrival, you will find a welcome basket including Hershey's chocolates, coffee, tea etc. We have a great house keeper who keeps the cabin immaculate, and we also have a wonderful neighbor who checks out the cabin and makes sure it is ready for you when you come up.

Compare our features to the following Lake Arrowhead hotels and cabins and you will see that we beat them across the board in price, privacy, size, quality, features and amenities:

An amazing getaway for 2

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from an amazing three night getaway at the Hershey Cabin. It was everything we were looking for in a mountain escape for just the two of us. The Herr's not only take pride in their beautiful property but know exactly what you as a renter are looking for in a home away from home. The cabin was just as described on VRBO. The amenities were above and beyond our expectations. Paul and Janice have thought of everything. The amount of time and detail they have invested in this cabin are remarkable. The rental process couldn't of been smoother. We enjoyed every minute of our stay visiting local attractions, eateries and all the cabin had to offer. We can't wait to visit their other property in the future.

My husband and I got to stay in Hershey Cabin for a long weekend. The place is perfect. The decor is fabulous, the kitchen VERY well stocked, the bed and linens super cozy and the a perfect getaway for 2. The bedroom felt like you were up in a treehouse.

There was a scrapbook on the building and renovation of the historical cabin that was very interesting. There were instructions for how everything worked in the cabin and we had no troubles.

We ate in town at the Lakefront Tap Room and it was excellent and overlooks the lake.

We walked around the neighbor hood and got a tour of Bugsy Seigel's brothel, now called The Bracken Fern Manor. We went into Big Bear one day and ate at Peppercorn Grille which was really good.

Thank you for a wonderful time!

Beautiful, Cozy Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a wonderful vacation in Lake Arrowhead, staying at the Hershey Cabin. The cabin is exceptionally well taken care of and super clean. We loved the beautiful fireplace, which we sat in front of each night watching Netfix movies. The cabin is beautifully decorated and the owners provide everything you need for a nice romantic get away (we came for our 6th anniversary). The kitchen had everything you need for making nice meals - and they have high quality pots/pans/kitchen ware etc, not a bunch of yard sale, second hand stuff. Loved the tree house bedroom - it was great to wake up in the morning and see nothing but trees and blue sky. The owners (who are super easy to deal with) have put together a beautiful, leather bound book which shows the history of the cabin and of Lake Arrowhead - wow, they sure did a beautiful remodel job on the Hershey Cabin! The cabin is only about a mile away from Lake Arrowhead Village, and from the entrance to the trail that goes around the lake. We will surely be coming back soon!

Bootleggers, gamblers, gangsters, trap doors and secret tunnels. Such are the legends of what today is the Tudor House. It began as Club Arrowhead in the Pines, a project of the Atkins Realty Co., which developed Arrowhead Villas and promoted the area as a place to “get away from the cares and worries of city life". Construction began in 1926, with the clubhouse being dedicated on July 4, 1928.

A brochure for Club Arrowhead pictures the sumptuousness of the clubhouse and details the many activities available to members, such as swimming in the huge pool or horseback riding. An associate life membership in Club Arrowhead was offered at $250.

Then the Great Depression hit. During the Great Depression Club Arrowhead became an elegant speakeasy with a trap door built beneath the bar to dispose of the bottles in case it was necessary. In the late 30's and early 40's, the infamous mobster Bugsy Siegel took over Club Arrowhead and ran a very successful gambling casino in the basement. He is also reputed to have operated a bordello across the street in a cottage belonging to the club (now the Fern Manor).

The Tudor House is now a wonderful dinner theater/ supper club/ concert hall etc. The Tudor House is located at 800 Arrowhead Villa Road, about a half mile from our cabin.
