Quaint Cabin in the Heart of the Black Hills

Bedrooms 1
Space 800 sq ft
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cabin sleeps 6 people, 1 full bathroom, full kitchen.

Grandma's house is approximately 800 square feet. It has a back bedroom with a queen size bed and its own back door. The adjacent sleeping area has 2 twin beds.. The large living area contains a dining table, 2 couches and a queen size bed and tv. The kitchen is equipped with all kinds of dishes and cooking utensils, and a propane barbecue grill is available for outside cooking. The bathroom has a tub/shower combination and towels and linens are provided. There is a screened in porch on the front of the older part of the house which is shaded by two huge spruce trees. It is a wonderful place to enjoy a meal or just relax and listen to the creek babble by. Deer and turkey visit the yard often and can be viewed from any window in the house. Adjacent to the house is what we call the bunkhouse. It has one side that was once a one car garage. It is simply used for storage or protection for motorcycles. The other side is mostly being used for storage and has extra beds just in case the need arises. The property has two sheds used primarily for horses, but could offer motorcycle protection as well.

This is a non-smoking home. Friends are welcome to smoke outside. Pets are not allowed in the house.

This home has been recently renovated. While the basic floor plan remains the same, the flooring, wall and ceilings surfaces are all new. Grandma's house is sporting all new roof, windows, blinds, paneling, vinyl and laminate flooring and more. The bathroom has been enlarged and now includes a full size washer and dryer. The little house was already adorably quaint. We hope you will find it even more delightful now.

About Jeannie Marr

I am Cody Rust. I live in Amarillo, Texas and have my whole life. I have taught school for 26 years. My family is very western and horsey which will explain the horse pens you see on the property. My dad was just an old cowboy who raised quarter horses in Texas, and my grandmother (from South Dakota) raised Arabians. My kids and I continue the family horse tradition using our quarter horses for ranch work and 4H contests. These activities and the general 'busyness' that goes with raising kids has been keeping us too busy to enjoy Grandma's house as much as we would like to, and that is one reason we are offering it to you.

Why Jeannie Marr chose Hill City

My grandparents moved from Sioux Falls to the Hills in the late '50s/early '60s. When they moved into this house only the main house with the kitchen and the bunkhouse existed. There was no indoor plumbing. The tax office tells me it was built in 1920 or thereabouts. My mom and we five kids would visit every summer for several weeks. We four girls would sleep in the bunkhouse at night. The outhouse was behind the bunkhouse, and could be really scary for little kids at night! But we had lots of fun riding our horses, hiking, picking berries, swimming and eating Grandma's home cooking. We did not even know we were poor. It was quite possibly the most amazing time of my life. Then in the '70s my grandparents added on the large living area and put in a real bathroom, and that made it super nice. My grandparents, Bobby and Pete Taylor passed the property to my mom, and she passed it to me. It is difficult to take care of when I live so far away, but it is very important to me that it is preserved and taken care of and hopefully, in a couple of years I will be able to enjoy it more fully. In the meantime, we wish to share it with people who we hope can appreciate it and experience the flavor and charisma of its quaintness. We truly hope your experience there creates a life long, pleasurable memory.

What makes this cabin unique

Being from west Texas where trees and live water are sparse, it's not hard to understand how much I appreciate a property with pine and aspen trees and a creek! I am in love with the sweet red house, with it's ancient, screened in porch. My grandmother made jelly from the chokecherry tree next to it, not to mention the ones that now grow on what used to be a rock cellar. It's sweet kitchen had the most adorable old window that has to be pulled in and up, and propped open with a tree branch. I think it is terrific fun to open the window between the kitchen and screened in porch and simply pass food through the window to the table on the porch. Silly, I know..but fun. Not the Hilton, but way sweeter. Life in the red house is simple and cozy.

Wish we could live here!

  • 5 of 5

There was only one problem with our stay here. It wasn't long enough. My wife and I needed a weekend away from town (we live in Rapid City). I looked at probably a dozen or more properties, then stumbled upon this listing. It was everything we wanted!

Upon arriving, it was exactly as listed... no, it was better than that. From the freshly mowed yard, the cleanliness inside, the historic family pictures on the wall, to the small touch of a welcome card and bouquet of flowers on the table. It was perfect. The kitchen was fully stocked with utensils and small appliances. We spent the weekend basking in the amazing quietness, interrupted only be the chirps of the birds, the woodpecker in the distance, and the gentle breezes through the trees. We sat inside the screened in porch, and could almost feel Grandmas love. We didn't even turn on the TV during our stay

Thank you for an amazing experience. We want to come back again soon.

Owner's Response: This response is so sweet I have had trouble thinking of how to respond. We so appreciate the comments on small touches we have done. I do appreciate my manager, Jeannie. I think she keeps the house amazingly clean, and her husband, does a beautiful job keeping the yard. My friend, Jim, did an outstanding job remodeling the house. I can't thank them enough for their help with our treasured heirloom, Grandma's House.

Quiet and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed our 3 night stay. 5 stars because the listing was accurate and the location was exactly what we were looking for. Close to town but quiet and secluded. We enjoyed the screened in porch. Deer and wild turkeys walked through the yard daily. The cabin was clean and well kept. The lawn was mowed. The kitchen was well stocked. Beds were nice. Washer and dryer. Large bathroom with nice towels.

Grandma's cozy cabin is located in the heart of the Black Hills. Situated on acreage in a quiet gulch, your family and friends can enjoy the green of the meadow framed by sacred hills and let the kids play in the babbling brook in front of the house when you are taking a break from sight-seeing adventures. The property is adjacent to forest service land which means there are miles of country to be explored. The Mickelson Trail is within walking distance as well. Town, with all of its amenities, is just one mile away. Our favorite place to eat is the Alpine Inn in Hill City where you can eat a great filet Mignon at a very reasonable price. Be sure to save room for a gourmet dessert! Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park are just 15 miles away, and historic Deadwood with its gambling is 45 miles away. The Sturgis Bike Rally is less than an hour away. The 26 miles between Rapid City and Hill City are dotted with family oriented attractions such as Reptile Gardens, Bear Country, a maze, and a water park. If you are into archaeology, you will definitely want to drive the 45 miles to Hot Springs and visit the Mammoth Site which is truly amazing. Don't forget to swim at the landmark Evans Plunge, a naturally heated swimming pool, while you are there. Throughout the hills there are numerous small lakes that are fun to visit. We have always enjoyed picking a different one to visit each day and taking our swim suits, fishing poles, rubber raft and snacks.
