Location: Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico, USA (Top of the Ski Valley! Close to the Kachina Chair and the Bavarian) View Map
Accommodations: Condo, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps family of 6 in comfort on real beds)
Brand new listing in January 2014!
Situated in a scenic location at just over 10,000ft, just a short walk from the Kachina ski lift and Phoenix lodge. Built in 2007, it is one of the newest accommodations in Taos Ski Valley. It has incredible views of the backside of the ski valley, Kachina Peak, and the surrounding Sangre de Cristo mountains. Thanks to it's position in the valley, the sunrise and sunset dramatically illuminates the peaks from the front porch and out the floor-to-ceiling windows. Wildlife abounds – including bighorn sheep, elk and bald eagles.
This property is spacious, comfortable, and has everything you need for a great vacation. The master bedroom is equipped with a king bed and Euro-topped mattress, and the master bath has a Jacuzzi tub. The 2nd bedroom is equipped to handle the family with two sets of bunks and (twin over twin and twin over full) and its own bathroom.
Heated floors take the edge off the brisk mountain temperatures, and the front balcony provides spectacular views of Taos Ski Valley and the surrounding 13,000+ peaks. The kitchen is open, well equipped, and has plenty of counter space for cooking big meals for the family.
You will also find plenty of storage for your outdoor gear, as well as a full-size washer and dryer (a rarity in most accommodation around here).
If you don't feel like cooking, you're in luck! The highly-acclaimed Bavarian Restaurant is our neighbor. You will find delicious homemade German meals and the finest imported beers served in a beautiful and rustic Bavarian lodge. No need to drive, it's just 200 yards down the trail!
In the summer, the location is a perfect base for all your outdoor adventures. Adjacent trails lead into protected Wilderness Areas and onto the picturesque Williams Lake. Towering above the condo is Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in New Mexico, and a great place to hike. We also neighbor 'Northside', a collection of mountain bike and hiking trails for all skill levels.
During the winter, a short 5-7 minute walk takes you to the base of the Kachina lift, where you can skip the crowds by putting on your skis or snowboard starting your day on the fresh backside snow! No driving, no parking! The easy access to and from the condo means you can have a hot lunch at home, or watch your family and friends ski the Kachina bowl and trails from the balcony. (Note – if you have very young children who are not yet skiing, this location requires a drive down to the ski school and may not be for you.)
Roads are well maintained in the summer and well plowed in the winter. However – we are at altitude in a heavy snow belt - a vehicle with either a 4x4 or AWD system is required from November through April (chains are an alternative). If you are flying-in, a 4WD vehicle can be reserved at most NM car rental agencies.
Our family really enjoyed our week in Taos, the views are breathtaking and the condo was great. Our kids really enjoyed the bunk beds and the condo had everything we needed for our stay (except cable TV for the kids). Our only two challenges were getting up the muddy road to the condo in our FWD SUV as the snow melted (we brought chains but didn't try them in the mud - thank God there wasn't any snow on the road) and getting to the lifts (a bit too far to walk in ski boots on a muddy road, but an easy drive). We really enjoyed apres ski at the Bavarian, but the food was really expensive so we only ate there once. The restaurants in the village are really good, and there are some great options if you want to drive all the way down to Taos. The ski school was a mess for our kids (really busy and disorganized), but probably because of the Spring Break crowds. Not a great ski resort for beginners, but very good for experts and intermediate skiers.
Beautiful location, great place to spend a few days with the family out of the Texas heat
Condo was very accommodating. All amenities other than TV and ski locker were as expected. My wife (who doesn't ski) was confined to the condo without advanced notice to prepare for the fact that there is no TV service in the condo. We had warning that the fireplace was not working and would have made arrangements if we knew there was no TV service. The lock on the ski locker door was busted, so after leaving skis on the ski rack on vehicle with very low temperatures the first two evenings, we had issues with frozen bindings in the morning. Near access to chair 4 was great and it was an awesome four days of skiing. Will always look for accommodations on the back side of mountain in the future and would stay in this condo again.
If you have ever been to Taos, you know that it is hard to find decent lodging for more than 4 people without having to drive to the base everyday. I have stayed all over the area (Plaza, El Prado, and in the Valley) and without a doubt Wheeler Peak Condos are the best location that we have found. The views are spectacular, it is close to The Bavarian, and close to chair 4. You can easily walk to the lift, though we drive and leave a car loaded with gear, food, etc. Aside from the amazing location, the condo is well equipped and has nice finishings (especially for a rental). There is plenty of space for everyone to lounge around and recap their day of skiing while others cook in the adjacent/open kitchen; the best way to cook is with company that isn't in your way. I cannot think of anything that I would change about this place, it is somewhere that we will continue to come back to. In fact my mother-in-law, who came with us as a baby sitter, is planning on coming back to this same unit in the summer with her husband. She loved the scenery and the quiet, remote location that will offer her cool summer temps than her home state. She could not stop talking about how "lovely this place" was.
The owners were great to work with as well. Their communication was prompt and professional. They even sent me an email to let me know that they heard the new Kachina Chair was going to be running for the first time during our stay!
Taos is arguably the best expert mountain in North America and it never has a lift-line….but let’s face it – Taos has a lodging problem. Over the past three decades, we’ve stayed just about everywhere in TSV. Places like the Edelweiss and the Snakedance are really nice – but they are really pricey. Several of the other options are quite dated (and still pretty expensive). It always feels like options for our family of six are limited - and the good lodging is in short supply. And staying down-valley stinks.
Tucked away on the backside and above the village, we didn’t even know about the Wheeler Peak Condos. Our friends from Houston rented last summer for a week of mountain biking – they LOVED it and asked why we didn’t stay here. So we gave it a try.
Turned out to be a surprise and delight – a wonderful place. It was quiet, comfortable, spacious and incredible clean. It was also the newest place we have ever stayed in Taos. A very well equipped condo with all of the cookware and essentials we needed, a Jacuzzi tub, and even a full-size washer dryer. Most of the neighbors are owners, not renters (and very nice people).
The Bavarian Restaurant is located literally right around the corner and is a must – authentic Bavarian food, ambiance, and the best beers you will EVER meet. We ate in the condo and walked over for apple strudel and beer (highly recommended).
The location is accurately described in the listing. Not ski-in/ski-out, but a short walk to the Kachina lift – felt like 5 mins through the woods. You can also drive around the block and park about 20 feet from the chair, which is a neat trick. Either way, its painless. And you are the only ones on the backside when they crank the lift.
Important note in the winter – its just over a mile up from the base and a 4WD or AWD vehicle of some kind is required (or tire chains … but that’s a pain in the butt). Its nothing crazy - we had no issue at all in an AWD car – its just the town rules.
I would highly recommend this place to anyone traveling to the Taos Ski Valley. I still can’t get over the views – as good as anything in the Rockies. We will be back next year -- and maybe to escape the heat this summer.
