Overview

About the property

1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, Sleeps 4 With Loft, Kitchen, Sitting Room, And Patio

Enter your private retreat across the same sandstone threshold that parishioners did since 1862 when the building was first built. The 2 foot thick stone walls block out the sound and stress of the world outside while you relax in the sitting room in front of a cozy fire. The main sitting room/dining area and small kitchen is decorated with a colonial touch. Mt. Culmen is the perfect place to stay for a few nights or a few weeks while you explore the area. It is ideal for those who like the welcoming feel of a bed and breakfast but want a higher level of privacy and independence. We prepare a light breakfast in advance, for guests to enjoy at their convenience. We live nearby, though not on the same premises. The bedroom with queen size bed, adjoining bath and a private sitting room are all located on the first floor. A unique spiral staircase leads to the loft overlooking the main sitting area. The two single beds provide sleeping accommodations for two additional guests, for a total capacity of four people. Children must be over the age of 10. Hand hewn, charred and rugged, a cross hangs above the fireplace as a testament to the Source of solace found by the original visitors to the building. It served as a church from 1862 until the mid-1960's when it was converted to a private residence. We purchased it at an estate sale in 2007 after a fire nearly destroyed the structure. After a complete renovation, we are delighted to share Mt. Culmen with guests from around the globe who come to be refreshed.Listen to the wind whisper through the pine trees while sitting on the flagstone patio. The old blacksmith's shop across the walkway gives a secluded feel to the westward view across the Weaverland Valley. Amenities include: Refrigerator, range/oven, microwave, coffee maker, DVD and CD players, alarm clock, gas stove, heat and AC, antique push-button light switches, paved driveway, patio table and chairs. There are three steps in the walkway, one step up into the guest house and the bathroom is handicapped accessible. At Mt. Culmen, sleeping in 'church' is required!

About Ronda

We both grew up in eastern Lancaster County just a mile from Mt. Culmen. Just a generation ago, our families traveled the neighborhood in horse and carriages, farmed the land and cut firewood in the hills. My husband has always been fascinated by local history, so the old stone church-turned-guest house fits our interest. I enjoy trying new recipes to share with our guests for their breakfast. Mt. Culmen is really a labor of love for us. Hearing how others have been refreshed, renewed and re-focused during their stay is what motivates us. Just as the building itself has been restored to a new use, so the cross above the mantle reminds our guests that God can restore broken and burnt-out lives and relationships.

Ronda purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Ronda chose Pennsylvania Dutch Country

Mt. Culmen overlooks the valley where my husband's family has lived for generations.Since the 1700's when his relative and inventor joseph shirk created the first grain cradle. We had talked for a few years prior about setting up a guest house nearby our home. We even mentioned this specific property as we would drive by it regularly. When it came up for sale after the fire, we purchased it and began a total reconstruction, culminating a year later with an open house. We like things that have a story to them, and this property certainly fits. It has a small adjoining cemetery, presenting some unique challenges to the land acquisition and lot consolidation!

What makes this cottage unique

Most of all, Mt. Culmen provides a peaceful place of respite both to our guests and to us while we are maintaining it.

Cottage was Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We purchased tickets to see a show in reeding and wanted to stay nearby. We found this gem. The house is so beautifully restored and so clean. We sat outside and drank wine while we watched the Amish horse and buggies ride by. We explored the grounds. Later that night we curled up on the couch in front of the fireplace. In the morning we enjoyed the breakfast left in the refrigerator for us. We absolutely recommend this place!

Keith and Ronda really went above and beyond fixing up this wonderful peace of history. I loved it. Every detail was great all the way down to the small breakfast she left for us. Thank you for sharing your home. God bless you both.

Idyllic Haven!!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband couldn't get done raving about all the delightful, lovely details, and the exceptional peaceful, pleasant atmosphere of this little haven. We were delighted to find baked oatmeal, fresh blue berries and strawberries, apple juice, milk, yogurt and breakfast sandwiches in the refrigerator as well as homemade granola and a banana on the counter. "We will come here again!" My husband promised. Everywhere we turned were thoughtful, tasteful touches and charming antiques, providing a pleasant atmosphere. The entire property and home were pristinely clean, and the furnishings were tasteful and comfortable. Pictures don't do justice! The many thoughtful details made the stay like a delightful treasure hunt. But most of all, the house provided a peaceful, comfortable, refreshing atmosphere for us to crash and refresh on a busy weekend. Rhonda's communication was very prompt and helpful. The Old Stone Church surpassed all our hopes and expectations, and I know we will be back to this hidden gem!

Peaceful and Relaxing Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was AWESOME! The property is beautiful and well-maintained. It is located in the rural hills of Pennsylvania--so beautiful and peaceful! We stayed two nights and made the cottage our homebase as we traveled up to Northampton County, PA to do some genealogical research of my ancestors. The history of the cottage as a former church was intriguing and the remodeling done to the structure is wonderful. Ronda had a light breakfast prepared for us which she left in the refrigerator and all the information and instructions we needed to enjoy our time at the cottage were provided both in advance and in the cottage once we arrived. Ronda also went above and beyond when she shipped us a bag my husband had inadvertently left at the cottage. Overall, one of the best places we've ever stayed anywhere in our travels and the customer service can't be beat! Thank you.

Beautiful Restored Old Church Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in this awesome old church that has been tastefully restored by Ronda and her husband. We did not meet the owners, but communication was wonderful. The attention to detail and the way the restoration preserves the authenticity of the original country church are amazing. We were comfortable and very relaxed in the picturesque setting of the cottage in PA dutch land. Many horse drawn carriages passed by the property throughout the day. We felt like we were back in time! We highly recommend this place for a quiet, romantic get-away.

Charming, comfortable and cozy!

  • 5 of 5

This guest house is full of charm. We loved reading about its rich history, and we had everything we could possibly need. The owners provided a nice breakfast for us also. It couldn't have been any better. It was so relaxing and rejuvenating. We cannot wait to go back. This guest house is a true gem.
