I am Jeff Longwell. I have lived in Plattsburg for over 11 years. My "day job" is a computer programmer which I do from my home.
Jeff Longwell purchased this house in 2011
This was my 1st vacation rental property in Plattsburg. In the beginning never had any intention of using the home as a 'business.' It started out as simply a project: a home to fix up and sell that was located next door. But once got involved in working on this home, could bear to give it up - becoming very attached to it but didn't have a clue what to do with it. Then one day had an idea to turn it into a vacation rental, and the rest as they say, is history.
Upon arriving, the 2 story Victorian style house's history stands out with 'painted lady' details, unique front porch with 'sleeping deck' above it. Upon entry into the home the original woodwork, floors, and room layout brings you back to another era. Unique attributes like the original parlor, pocket door, transoms above the doors, coal burning insert and wood mantel, along with period furnishings are found throughout the house. There are 3 very large windows which still have the original stained glass at the top.
Our extended family of 21 gathered from MO, MN and TX in Plattsburgh at the Downey House and next door Farm House for a family reunion. These two houses could not have been more perfect for our needs. The Downey House is a beautifully kept Victorian home and was decorated in every room for Christmas. In fact our room even had a Christmas tree in the bay window. It was the perfect place for Granny and the older adults to enjoy some quiet from the heavenly chaos going on next door at theFarm House where the younger adults and children stayed. This is where we prepared our meals and gathered for fun and games. Some of the cooking was also done at the Downey House, so having two kitchens was such blessing. It was so easy going back and forth between the two houses as needed. The owner provided a darling lighted Christmas Train that seated children and adults. He took us on a ride around the town to see the lights. We also enjoyed the fire pit and the big field in back was perfect for playing ball and running around. And the nearby Shatto Dairy Farm tour was a highlight! We will be back for our next reunion soon!
What a unique property the Downey House is. We stayed with our Grand kids on the way home to Texas and memories of my Grandfathers farm came to me. The wooden stairs that creaked with the steps taken and a pocket door to look at. Our hat is off to you and your family for saving the Downey house and sharing her with travelers.
