About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 6

Welcome to the perfect get-a-way to ski, bike, and hike (and relax)! The Bike and Bean Cabin is a beautifully crafted log home that includes everything you need for a great time in the NC mountains.

At approximately 4000 feet elevation, this log cabin is located near popular hiking trails with very little traffic or noise, yet close to all Beech Mountain amenities such as Beech Mountain Ski Resort (1.8 miles), Buckeye Lake and Recreation Center (0.5 miles), and Emerald Outback Bike Trails (1 mile). You’ll also be close to the stores and restaurants in Beech Mountain including Fast Eddie’s Restaurant and General Store (2 miles) and Fred’s General Store (3 miles) just to mention a few.

The Bike and Bean Cabin is clean and beautifully decorated with everything you’ll need including a stocked kitchen, towels, linens and washer/dryer. Enjoy the view from the covered deck while relaxing in an Adirondack chair, play a board game at the handcrafted kitchen table, or enjoy the sound of a crackling fire in the stone fireplace or outdoor firepit. If you hate the heat of the summer, come on up to the Bike and Bean where the average temperature in July is only 77F. Or if snow is your thing, come see us in winter where the average snowfall is 70 inches. The fall colors are also breathtaking. Either way, this is perfect vacation for any time of year!

Why Jonathan Blackwell chose High Country & Blue Ridge Mountains

We have dreamed for many years of owning a cabin on Beech Mountain after we visited one summer for a mountain bike race. When we saw this cabin come on the market in 2009 we were ecstatic. It came with the best of both worlds: a cabin that feels remote from the world yet only 1/4 mile off the main road which leads to ski resorts and world class mountain bike trails only a few miles away. This cabin has been the our base camp for adventures the past few years and we would now like to share it with you.

Jonathan and Kristin

It's great if you're used to curvy mountain drives

  • 3 of 5

Let me start by saying that this is a very nice cabin. The decor made it feel like a true "cabin in the woods" experience, even though you have neighbors in front. Now, the draw backs that my family and I experience were... The description to the cabin really doesn't give you a sense on how far everything is and how curvy the drive up and down the mountain is each time you want to leave.Just to go to the food lion for some groceries you're looking at a 40 min drive each way. Being that we came up from Florida, it would've been nice to know on the description or even when I spoke with the owner how the drive up the mountain really was. We especially would've liked to have known about the Bears. We came up in the middle of November when it was prime season for black bears to be out looking for food before they begin hibernating. It would've been nice to know this so we could've known that fires outside were out of the question. Instead we would hear and see the Bears every night outside the cabin. Quite the scary sight. Especially when you consider my 4 year old could've been out there with us enjoying a fire. I feel that if these facts about the cabin are not specified in description, the owner should've offered this information at least for safety reasons. Again, if you are used to curvy up and down drives and you are from the area that knows the dangers of the black bears this time of year, this is a good choice for you! If you are coming from out of town, especially from a place with no curvy long drives and bears, you might want to find another place to stay.

Owner's Response: First, thank you for the nice comments regarding the cabin itself. We pride ourselves on having a cabin that captures the experience of being remotely located in the woods but being only 1.5 miles to the ski resort, 5 minutes to the general store (Fred's) and typically the drive to the nearest grocery store takes about 15 minutes (at least for people who have driven in the mountains before). Please keep in mind, if you are booking your vacation at Beech Mountain, the highest mountain resort on the east coast, there will be mountain roads...which are typically curvy and uphill. Last...the bears! I have to say wow! I have been coming to Beech Mountain for over 7 years and have spent hours upon hours hiking the trails on and around the mountain and the only bears I have seen are the ones held in captivity at Grandfather Mountain. I have seen plenty of other wildlife from deer, wild turkeys and skunks but never a bear. Black bears are typically very skittish, nocturnal animals and to actually see one is a once in a lifetime experience. If you were able to take photos, please send them to me so I can post the Bike and Bean facebook page!

Great home and wonderful host

  • 5 of 5

We stayed Friday through Monday and enjoyed a much needed time away from life. We have previously stayed in Blowing Rock and Lenoir. The home was clean and stocked! It was comical that the cabin had as many spices as I have at home and condiments in the fridge left from previous visits. Anything we needed was there. Jonathan was VERY responsive and got right back to me any time I had a question which was only twice. There were deer everywhere which we loved and were told by a local that you cannot hunt deer on Beech which explained why there were so many. We had a fire each night outside and would then move indoors for a fire when it got chilly. We went to Julian Price Park and hiked the 5 mile trail which is always a favorite and we went to the Mast General Store, Linville Caverns and much more. I am giving it 5 star b.c the house and hosts were wonderful but I wouldnt go to Beech again. The ride up the mountain took an extra 30 minutes and was an hour from most things we did. We found Lenoir and Blowing Rock much closer to activities we wanted to do. It would be perfect if you were going to ski and stay on the mountain. I dont consider myself a nervous driver but I was beyond nervous going up and down Beech Mountain with the steep grade and constant turns. I cant imagine traveling it during snow and ice although I was told they keep the roads pretty clear. We have a Yukon XL 4wd and I would still be nervous. The driveway to the home is very steep and a tad nerve wracking as well. The steps are a bit much up and down the house as well as the path to get to the firepit. We were originally going to take my parents who are in their 70's and it would have never worked for them. But in closing, the house was great and wonderful kind hosts-just not a fan of Beech but so glad we went and had the opportunity to compare.

Very peaceful and quiet. Nice location.

  • 5 of 5

Beautifully appointed cabin. Nicely decorated with all the amenities. Just like home. Isolated, but close to town. Deep in the woods. The foliage was awesome on the mountain. Gorgeous colors and views. Ate at Fred's and Famous Eddie's. very good and reasonably priced.

I highly recommend visiting Grandfather Mountain while in the area. Also, go to the original Mast General Store in Valle Crucis.

The only negative we had with the cabin was the amount of steps to get from the ground up to the cabin. It was tough on these 70+ year old legs.

Jonathan was an excellent host. He communicated well and answered all our guestions and concerns.

Peaceful retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a great location being the last house on a quiet road. Looking for a hike? You don't need to get back in the car; just go up the road to "Smoke Tree Trail" and you have your hike in front of you. Golf? Public course at Sugar Mountain was a lot of fun. A thrilling bike ride? Linville Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Solitude? Sit at the fire pit built into the side of the hill behind the house and be surrounded by nature. We had a great Fall visit and ended everyday using the fireplace. Very comfortable house, gracious owner, and something that can't be taken for granted...comfortable beds! The kitchen had a few "extra- special" items missing to become that 'perfect rental kitchen' and the owner is ready to see that it happens. An owner that cares is not to be forgotten.

Everything we needed for our week's stay on Beech Mountain

  • 5 of 5

Secluded cabin living with all the modern conveniences you would require. Comfortable well-maintained and spacious enough for our group of five. Felt like we were a million miles away from civilization but we were just a quarter mile off the main roads. Especially liked the fire pit, hot water, full kitchen, games selection, wifi, Netflix, among other things. Jonathan was very accessible and helpful. We enjoyed roaming around town but also just hanging at the cabin, chilling on the front deck enjoying a cold beverage as the sun disappeared. Spotted deer out the back window. Neighbors friendly. We would recommend this rental. Photos on website are accurate, no surprises. Lots of activities in the area for outdoorsy folks, but we fit in some shopping as well.

Great Family Escape!

  • 5 of 5

I just spent 5 days with my family of 4 at this cabin and we were so happy with our stay! The cabin was clean, comfortable, and in a great location! And Jonathan goes to great lengths to add nice little details, amenities like hiking sticks, and WiFi access are just a couple of the items provided which you don't expect. We woke up one morning with deer outside our window, and we could hear the sound of a nearby creek from the balcony where we sipped our morning coffee. I recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway in the mountains!
