Built in 2012, and designed to embody the Hawaiian Sugar Plantations of the early 1900s, this private oceanfront estate allows you to enjoy the grandeur of the once thriving sugar industry that lined the Hamakua Coast, between Hilo and Honokaa to the north. Reminiscent of the large plantation estates, this home will allow you to immerse yourself within the beauty of the Big Island of Hawaii with its entire splendor overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The Big Island of Hawaii holds many treasures for one to see, and this location offers adventure and abundance - all within walking distance or just a short leisurely drive along the historic coastline. Enjoy the nearby majestic waterfalls, the tropical botanical gardens, or maybe take them all in on a zip-line adventure ...it's all right here and awaiting your arrival!
The main house of this private estate, known as Palua 'K Plantation, is a 3-story 3-bedroom 3.5-bath home, fully furnished and designed with luxury and comfort in mind. The upper floor has two master bedrooms complete with king sized beds, separate baths, covered lanais, and open air viewing decks. On the main level there is a third bedroom with a queen sized bed, full kitchen, and cozy den. Also on the main level is a beautiful 2-story great room with a formal dining room and living room, plus expansive wrap-around lanais. No matter where you are within the home you will experience gorgeous ocean views, stunningly scenic hillsides, and majestic Mauna Kea - our long dormant northern volcano. And, did we mention that there is an exercise gym, bonus room, laundry services, and a full bath at the bottom level.
Every room of this home is luxuriously appointed so that you can relax and enjoy this residence as your own. For your added comfort, there is a resident reception staff located in a separate structure 24-hours a day / seven days a week. Relax and be assured that your arrival and check-in will go as smoothly as possible!
Around the home and on this estate there are numerous viewing decks, garden walkways, and coconut/banana/exotic fruit lined paths ...pick some fresh fruit, when in season, and enjoy the taste of the islands! Or, take in the views from the terraces, various ocean lookouts that will take your breath away! Enjoy the rolling waves while lounging or sitting around the fire pit, and watch the whales and dolphins jumping (in season) almost as if they were under your feet.
Now if the great outdoors is your interest, the adventures of the Big Island will continue in all directions from here. Just across the street and up the slope, two zip-line companies offer breathtaking rides over the Umauma Falls and Botanical Gardens. ...or just walk among the cows, goats and sheep that dot the hillsides. To the south and just over the bridge is the site of the old Hakalau Sugar Company, and the public beach lined with coconut trees swaying in the breezes, locals fishing, and surfers riding the waves. This makes for a nice walk from the house, maybe 2-3 miles round trip by foot or a short drive by car.
For more sites within the immediate area, we also recommend a visit to the famous Akaka Falls State Park just a few minutes to the south. Experience the sweet smells of tropical flowers and the mist from the grand ~450ft waterfall. Traveling to Akaka Falls takes you through an old plantation town called Honomu with its historic storefronts still in operation today. Enjoy great bakery treats at Mr. Ed's, or other fine foods at one of the local outlets. And if you are looking for a bigger town center, shops and restaurants then continue south to Hilo. Hilo is the main city of east Hawaii, and there are ample places for shopping, eating, or site seeing. We might also recommend the Hilo Farmers Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays with lots of fresh fruits & vegetables and many other fine crafts. Continuing on south another ~45 minutes, and you will find Volcano National Park. Here the volcano named Kilauea (which has been erupting continuously since 1983) has active lava flows - a must see if you are on the Island of Hawaii!
If the cattle ranch lands and horseback riding are more your interests we suggest you drive north, but make sure to stop in Laupahoehoe and take the scenic drive down water’s edge to the breathtaking beach and park, this location was also was the site of the devastating tsunami of 1946. We highly recommend visiting the Old Railroad Station located within Laupahoehoe where you will find a wealth of information about the sugarcane plantations and the railroad that once connected the Hamakua Coast from Hilo at the south point and up towards Honokaa and the Waipio Valley at the northern tip. Watch the train museum video if you can, it’s worth the wait! And now that you know all about The Hamakua Heritage Coast, proceed onwards and continue north to either Waipio valley (also known as the Valley of The Kings), or up the mountain to the cattle ranching town of Waimea—yee haw :-). Horseback riding anyone? And did we mention there is great food up this way too?!
Highway 19 (also known as Hawaii Belt Road) runs by the estate and if you stay on this road in either direction you'll find your way back home. By simply connecting to the other local highways, one can easily connect to any of your desired local destinations from here, or continue on to all of the other towns and cities of the Big Island of Hawaii!
Palua 'K Plantation Company, which means dual or double 'K in the Hawaiian language, was named after the two owners. As the current guardians or care-providers of this wonderful strip of land, their aim was to bring back the look and feel of the once thriving sugar plantations that lined the beautiful Hamakua Coast on the Big Island of Hawaii.
The owners have lived and worked on the islands since 1983, with many friends and family members here, and now occasionally they find themselves traveling for work to Japan, Korea or China, and of course the US mainland is always on the list as well.
Please join everyone here to enjoy the wonders of Hawaii, to share and respect the beautiful Hawaiian people with their cultures and treasures that are the Islands of Hawaii.
Brett Kayzar purchased this estate in 2006
Unlike any other spot on the planet, this property allows an incredible view of the ocean and all the tropical wonders around it! After all, this is an island and why not be right on the ocean :).
This home on the Hamakua coast is absolutely fantastic! The soaring view from the family room started every day of our stay. The twin master bedrooms closed each night. Every need was anticipated and met. We had a wonderful time visiting your beautiful plantation by the ocean. We've made numerous trips to Hawaii and this is, by far, the most beautiful and comfortable place we have stayed.
Brett and his mom are absolutely the best hosts one could hope for.
The house is immaculate, you'll never set foot on such grand hardwood floors again in you life! The pictures just don't do this place justice, the views are amazing! The kitchen is perfectly setup with all the pots pans and utensils you can ask for. Also, there's a pantry that previous guest leave behind unopened common things that you will need. We left a few unopened groceries for the next guest to enjoy as well!
We enjoyed the fact that we were so close to a few private beaches and Akaka falls. The house is also a 15 minute easy no turn drive to downtown. That being said, you have the best of both worlds! If you rent this home there will be nothing "cookie cutter" about your vacation and all your family and friends will be peanut butter and JEALOUS of your vacation!!
All and all this was a great first experience to Hawaii!
We stayed at this awesome home during our 1 week trip on Big Island. It is a fantastic property with great views, very convenient location, spacious and comfortable interior.
The house is very conveniently located north of Hilo. Since it is North of Hilo, you can easily travel to Waipio valley, Weimea and Waikoloa It is very close to Akaka Falls and Botanical Gardens- less than 10 minutes. Most of the attractions in Hilo are less than 25 minutes away and Volcano National Park is less than 1 hr from the property.
It is an ocean front property with excellent Lanai and gardens. While we explored the various activities on Big Island, we also spent a lot of time simply relaxing on the Lanai.
The interior is classy and really well maintained. The house has AC in most of the rooms although we didn't use AC most of the days since there was enough breeze and ventilation throughout the house. It has all the elements of a nice cozy but high end home including family room with excellent TV, exercise room, well equipped kitchen and excellent bathrooms.
The owners' instructions were very clear, self explanatory and we didn't need any additional help. However, the owner was available via phone in case we needed any help which was great.
Overall it is a great property - very cozy, convenient location and amazing views. We will highly recommend it to anyone going to Big island and who wants to stay on the Hamakua Coast.
We will absolutely love to return to the property for vacation in the future.
This house is truly amazing, beautiful on the inside and out with stunning views of the Pacific. The great room, with impossibly high ceilings lit with subtle blue lighting, has been fashioned to resemble an underwater paradise. The east wall even has "waves." The two master suites upstairs are glorious, equipped with their own soaking tubs, giant showers, and bidets. The location is great for visiting Akaka Falls State Park and Hilo town.
We were disappointed to find that some of the dishes in the kitchen cabinets were put away dirty, so we had to wash everything again. Also, there were no spices stocked, so if you want to cook anything on the property, make sure to procure some salt when you shop for provisions. Despite these small inconveniences, we greatly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful home.
Photos do not do the property justice. Excellent location if you like hiking and adventure. Excellent for families with adventurous teenagers. If you like to just relax, its perfect for that as well. We explored so much yet one of our favorite days was spent on the huge lanai playing monopoly and seeing the whales breaching right off the coast. Dont let the easy to follow yet extensive rules detour you from this amazing property. Very private with pleasant property manager. Would love to stay here again.
Wow, the activities list seems endless ...walking to the local waterfalls, gardens, beachfronts or maybe trying something a little more adventurous like riding a zip-line, snorkeling in the lagoons, or wind surfing the ocean waves - these activities are just a few of the things within walking distance! And then just a short drive from here there are horseback riding tours, volcano eco-adventures, mountain biking, and even local golf outings. Or, maybe food is on the mind? ...try visiting exotically grown mushrooms, macadamia nut farms, or the volcano winery. Sunset luaus are also in abundance, and great restaurants can be found in all directions too! And please don't feel your activities are limited to warm tropical environments only, as there are eleven distinct climate zones on the Big Island of Hawaii - take a trip up to the top of Mauna Kea, or better yet, take a helicopter ride around the island's cliffs, valleys, and volcanos ...flights leave from Hilo or Kona area every day of the week! There is so much to see and do here on the Big Island; adventure awaits you at every turn!!
