6 Acre Orchard with Freshwater Stream, 1 Bed 1 Bath Cottage with Ocean Views

Sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding countryside welcome in beautiful golden sunrises over this one-bedroom, one bathroom private cottage. Newly built, among 6 acres with a cool spring-fed stream, you will find over 400 fruit and palm trees, including avocado, lemon, lime, star fruit, bananas, grapefruit, oranges, lychee, and other rare tropicals.

425 square foot cottage includes a kitchen, living and dining areas, TV with satellite channels, and WiFi internet.

Our property is 10 miles north of old Hilo town, 12 miles from the Hilo Airport, 40 minutes from the Kilauea Volcano National Park, 40 minutes to get to Mauna Kea with observatories, 6 miles from a beautiful beach. It is a quiet and peaceful place situated about a third of a mile from the ocean on a bluff.

About Kimberly Krail

We, proprietors Bob & Fa Jung (Kady), live in a separate home on the property as well as host the private cottage. Retired, we spend our days on our property doing what we love, being in the beautiful outdoors and farming. We have a cat, Skunky, and our border collie, Lily.

Kimberly Krail purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Kimberly Krail chose Hilo District

As a third generation Southern Californian, I knew there was only one place I could move. My wife, Kady, originally from Taiwan by way of New York and California, was of the same mindset. So we searched the islands as retirement beckoned.

What makes this cottage unique

We settled on the windward side of the Big Island because of its climate, country setting, and people.

We never dreamed we'd find such a wonderful place as what we call the Sun & Moon Orchard. So much so we want to share it with those who come to the Island looking for something not found among ordinary Hawaii travel plans.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a wonderful week I've had as inaugural guest! It passed all too quickly, but so wonderful to have this cottage to come home to every evening. It is well appointed and so comfortable. My only regret is that I did not explore the property and discover the creek sooner. Thank you Bob & Kady for the welcome and support during our time here.

Peaceful & Friendly

  • 5 of 5

We had a very good stay. The hosts (including Lily) were very friendly and welcoming. We felt like we were out in the country by ourselves, which was what we were looking for after busier islands. Despite this, the cottage wasn't far from Hilo downtown. Overall, it was a great location for us to tour the east side of the island. The tropical fruit trees provided a very pleasant Hawaiian atmosphere. The citrus and pineapple were so delicious. We'd love to stay here again.

Beautiful, quiet, and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Sun and Moon Orchard immensely. The cottage is beautiful and comfortable with amazing views. Bob and Kady are excellent hosts; spoiling us with fresh fruit from their orchard and eggs from their hens. We were given excellent recommendations for dining out and exploring the Hilo area as well. Lily, their Border Collie, was an absolute treat to play with each day. We could not have asked for a better stay and will definitely be back in the future.

Wonderfully relaxing stay at beautiful property

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I only stayed on the Hilo side of the island for 2 nights, but quickly surmised that we wished we'd stayed longer. The Sun and Moon cottage was a primary reason why. Bob and Kady were incredibly gracious hosts and greeted us open arrival with a basket of eggs (from their own chickens) and fresh limes picked from their tree. The cottage itself was tastefully appointed and had everything that we could have wanted. It is clean, modern and well taken care of. Bob and Kady clearly taken an interested in providing a wonderful experience for their guests. The grounds of the orchard are stunning, and my wife and I would spend time just walking around barefoot amongst the many fruit trees. Additionally, Bob and Kady allowed us to pick ripe lychee's that were delicious. The property is a quick drive to downtown Hilo and other beautiful places along the Hamakua coast. We loved our stay here and are thankful that we do not need to browse for other rentals on any return visits to the Big Island. We just hope the cottage will be available!

Overall this is a nice place to stay, but there is room for improvement.

Nice Couple - Brought us fresh eggs and fruit the first day.

Property is beautiful. (Nice and quiet!)

Bed was pretty comfortable

Distance to Hilo. Since this is actually 20 minutes north of Hilo, it added a lot of drive time to most of our activities (Volcano National Park, Tide Pools, etc). so this is something to consider.

No A/C - We knew this going in, but they make you keep the windows closed when you are not there so when you get back in the afternoon the temperature is muggy between 85-90 degrees F!! We really never were able to get the place cooled down so I didn't get hardly any sleep.

Privacy - They fence in the back porch which adds privacy, but when you sit on the porch there is no view! you are looking at a grey fence plus it blocks any kind of breeze you get (It gets hot and muggy in Hilo because of all the rain). Also, on one night, we were out to eat and I received a call (almost in a panic that we had left one of the windows open). He says that he needs our permission to enter the house or reassurance that we are coming right back. I never gave him permission and told him we were going to cut our dinner short and get back to close the window. When we got back the door was unlocked and the lights were on and of course the window was closed. So we had rushed back just to find out he had entered without our permission anyways and closed the window. This was extremely frustrating and basically ruined our night. It actually got my wife paranoid and she had me check to make sure you couldn't see through the shades! They are obviously watching the windows to make sure they are closed at all times...

Overall this is a nice place, but we won't be back. I found myself looking forward to our last day which should never happen when you are on vacation. Also, the distance to Hilo is an issue if you are doing a lot of your activities in Hilo.

Owner's Response: Much of the beauty of the Hamakau Coast is due to the rain we receive. For that reason we personally remind our guests at check in to keep windows closed whenever leaving the rental. Pretty basic info to locals, but many guests aren't aware of how quickly our weather changes. We do not want our guests to return to a rain soaked bed. 'Please keep windows closed when leaving' is also noted on two info sheets in the vacation rental. I phoned this guest when the rains began around 9PM. His voice mail was full, I began texting, he called and assured me they were " finishing dinner in Hilo." After 45 minutes of more pouring rain, they had not arrived. I was not about to let our beautiful Ohana be damaged by a careless tenant. I entered, close the window over the bed, texted him " I closed the window " and then I got a good night's sleep. As to the rest of this parties review, very simple. Let our 53 five-star reviews on this site alone speak for themselves. Aloha, Owners/Operators Bob & Kady
