Photos and Description of this 3 bedroom holiday home in Berea - Big Hill House

3 bedroom, 2 1/2 Bath, Close to Hiking, Crafts, and Berea College, Sleeps 6-9

The home sits on top of a hill, features passive solar design with windows spanning the entire south side of the home with loads of natural light. The very open floor plan includes a great room (living room, kitchen, and dining areas), family room, and 2 full baths on the main floor with two loft beds (a queen and a king) that overlook the living and family rooms respectively. There are two additional bedrooms, also on the 2nd floor, in between the two lofts, with a total of 5 twin beds, along with a 1/2 bath.

This unique and admittedly quirky place is loaded with nooks and crannies. If you are looking for a fun place to stay, with beautiful views, close to hiking and outdoor activities, and within a short drive to lots of central Kentucky destinations, this is it!

About Shannan and Nathan Rome

We are the daughters of Richard Martin, a green designer/builder in the Berea area for more than 30 years who had a reputation for building high quality energy efficient homes.

Why Shannan and Nathan Rome chose Kentucky

Our family home, aka the 'Big Hill House' was the first ever built by Richard Martin, a green designer/builder in the Berea area for more than 30 years who had a reputation for building high quality energy efficient homes.

The house was the first house that Daddy ever built and our childhood home. Given the unique features of the house and the obvious sentimental value of the home, we have decided to hold on to the house as a vacation home for our extended family and and have recently completed a series of renovations to the house so we are excited to share it with you!

Wonderful, unique & relaxing environment!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved Big Hill House! It had beautiful scenery, cozy & unique interior and everything we could possibly need. We didn't bring our 4 kids this time but there's plenty of room for the next time we visit! We took the short drive over & hiked Anglin Falls (beautiful) and had lots to do in Berea too. Thank you for sharing Big Hill House with us!

Wonderful getaway!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our stay here!! Plenty of games and books...Anglin Falls was a great place to take a beautiful hike. Our boys loved the house and the surroundings. My husband and I made several comments to each other that we could live here. There is so much character to this house! The ONLY thing that we could think of to make this stay just a tad better would be a fire pit to sit around in the evening and roast marshmallows...definitely not a deal breaker though!

Great house, wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved Big Hill House. Went there with our 2 grandchildren last weekend. We thoroughly enjoyed everything about the cabin. We would agree with others that it is quirky and has lots of nooks and crannies. I think its unusual qualities is what makes it so special. Lots of room for personal space for everyone. Fully functioning kitchen and everything was well stocked and readily available. Furniture and beds were comfortable. A fire ring would be a welcomed addition to the outdoor setting; perhaps the owners will consider one in the future.

The only drawbacks we would mention are that, although it is private from other homes on the road, there is another property behind Big Hill House; which is pretty close to the back of BH House. Also the lawn service arrived to mow and weed eat while we were there. Both these factors take away from the otherwise private setting. If the lawn service mowed when the house is not rented; and a row of hedges or other types of privacy-screening were added, to further separate and seclude BH House from the other property, the setting would be PERFECT. Those enhancements would allow BH House to have a very private, secluded atmosphere. Still, all in all, it was a wonderful house and we had a fantastic time hiking, cooking, reading, playing basketball, and just enjoying each others' company at BH House.

Owner's Response: Hi Ken, We're so glad that you enjoyed your time at the Big Hill House. And thanks for the feedback. We've talked about the possibility of adding a firepit. Maybe we'll add one at some point in the future. As you highlighted, the Big Hill House has a relatively private feel but is not totally private. The neighbor's house you mentioned is mostly concealed by an outbuilding, but it is relatively close to the back of house. As you suggested, we actually have planted some shrubs to add some privacy, but it will be years before they are fully mature. And, the lawn service is actually provided by the same neighbor, who works full time and mows when he is off on the weekends. Consequently, it's not practical to always schedule it when the house is empty so guests should be aware that he may come through for an hour or so to mow. It should also be noted that the house is fairly close to the main road. Even though it sits up high off the road, behind a hillside of trees, there is still some road noise. Long story short, the house is not perfect, but still pretty awesome, if we do say so ourselves. In any case, we are very glad that you were able to appreciate it's quirky charm and that it provided a place for you to have some time away with your grandkids to build some memories. Thanks again!

Cozy, relaxing place for a family getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family of six had a great stay at the Big Hill House. Locals even knew of the family and were sharing sites we should try to see! Very friendly area. The house was great, our family can echo previous comments about the quaint/quirky fun and plenty to do there without even leaving the house. Comfy beds all around and so much there that helped it feel to be as comfortable as our own home. We woke up feeling awesome in the king size bed. As adults young at heart we loved that we felt like we were sleeping in a treehouse with the giant window wall across from us. The kids loved that they could each have their own space with so many sleeping options and sitting room spaces. A welcomed rustic cabinish change from the cramped hotel nights on our road trip. Thank you so much for allowing us to experience it!

An Excellent Home away from Home

  • 5 of 5

My two sisters and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Big Hill House. We were there for four days and enjoyed being able to sit outside both in the morning for coffee and in the late afternoon/early evening for cold drinks and take in the mountains around us. There were plenty of choices for beds and bedrooms--all of them comfortable, light and airy. We even had enough bathrooms so we didn't have to share!! This is a lovely area and the hosts provided an excellent guide to all kinds of activities in the area. We're looking forward to coming back some day.

The Big Hill House

  • 4 of 5

Enjoyed the house, loved the feeling of isolation. The house is unique and what I would call quirky. It was well supplied with an outdoor eating area and a charcoal grill, which is very important to our group. One suggestion would be to reduce the clutter on counter spaces throughout the house. One improvement would be the addition a second shower. My group is planning on returning and I would suggest you market this to golfers. Gibson Bay is less than 1/2 hour, The Bull @ Boone's Trace is 40 minutes and the Battlefield golf course is 15 minutes. Plus there are multiple 9 hole courses in the area.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your feedback, Tim. We are glad that you enjoyed your time at the Big Hill House. We are especially grateful for tips about proximity to area golf courses. We will add a to-do item to add these attractions to our house guide and evaluate ways to do additional marketing for golfers. We agree that the house is quirky. We also think (and hear from others that) it's part of its charm. That quirkiness includes the fact that there aren't any pull-out drawers in the kitchen, which explains why we keep things out on the counters so items are easy for guests to find. With regard to the lack of a second shower in the house - the big bathtub was a wish-list item of one of the female owners. We find that our female guests typically appreciate more than the men do. It's worth noting that there is a hand-held shower head in the tub.
