About the property

2 Bedrooms/2.5 Bathrooms, With Mountain Views

Attractive, new, modern condo available for short term rental.

The condo has 2 bedrooms and 2.5 baths. It has a lot of natural light, and lovely views of the Caja Mountains. The dining area and master bedroom have windows running floor to ceiling. The windows are double-paned and the apartment is located away from the street so it is usually quiet. Each bedroom has its own private bath, and there is a guest ½ bath off the living area. Both bedrooms have queen beds with pillow top mattresses, 2 night tables with lamps, and built in closets. The 2 full bathrooms have showers. The master has a walk-in shower with rainfall shower head. The other bathroom has a corner shower with detachable shower head with hose. The kitchen/dining /living areas are open plan with sliding glass doors opening to a balcony. The kitchen is spacious with granite counter tops and a counter height breakfast bar with 3 chairs. The dining table will seat 6. A wall-mounted 40in HDTV swivels for viewing from the living room or dining area. The kitchen has plenty of storage, 4 burner gas cook top, microwave and a gas wall oven with rotisserie. Adjacent, but closeted, is the laundry with combo washer/dryer and small laundry sink. The second bedroom has a computer desk with adjustable chair. All appliances, furnishings, cookware and linens are provided. We have WiFi internet, Blue Ray DVD player with a DVD library, and a roku (internet TV). You can purchase new release DVDs across the street for $1.50. We also have a security safe in the master bedroom closet.

Located just 5 minutes away by cab from the historic district, this condo is located near a plaza featuring a grocery store, home goods store, pizza/ice cream shop, and many smaller stores. Nearby is the largest Mercado, a cooperativa market, and numerous restaurants, including a vegetarian one, all within easy walking distance. There is a small park across the street. The condo is situated in a new condominium building of 20 units. The building has an elevator, a large, nicely furnished lobby, and guard/24 hour security. There are several English speaking neighbors in the building. A parking space is available, but a car is not necessary to explore Cuenca from here. A cab ride costs about $1.50 to the historic center, or you can go across town for $4.00. Several bus lines (25 cents) are close by the apartment or, for exercise, it’s about a 30 minute scenic walk to the historic area of town.

About Katherine Bishop

Here we are at La Esquina, one of our favorite restaurants. We retired to Cuenca a little over 3 years ago. My husband was born in Cuba, so his native language is Spanish. I grew up in Central Florida. We met 38 years ago at the same workplace, but never knew each other well, and did not keep in touch. He remembered me and looked me up when he moved back to the area in 2005. We met, dated, and were married in 2007. My husband is a psychiatrist, and I am a clinical social worker. We enjoy walking and exploring Cuenca, dining out, and spending time with friends. I love cooking, reading, taking Spanish lessons, and photography. My husband loves music, reading about geopolitical topics, and eating my cooking.

Why Katherine Bishop chose Ecuador

We had looked at this building during construction 2 years ago, then again in 2012. We ended up buying something already completed in another building where we were renting. After we were settled, we took a look again and decided to purchase a smaller condo in this building to use for guests, and family, and to rent it out short term. Since we travel sometimes, we have a professional property manager to take care of many of the details.

What makes this condo unique

It's an architecturally interesting building, not the gigantic red brick boxes, so often built here. It is full of light and has lovely views. It has a very convenient location, very close to shopping and the soon to be built tranvia or light rail system. It is located on one of the small hills within the valley of Cuenca, so it has a very nice view even from the lower floors. There are wonderful neighbors in the building as well.

Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

I came to Cuenca for a three week respite from Michigan weather, and this apartment was perfect for my needs.

From my experience, some apartment owners don't really know what they are getting into when they decide to rent this way: things are broken, the Internet is flaky, the hot water runs out, etc. I had none of these problems with Katherine and Eduardo's condo. Everything was very professional, and there were no problems at all. Maribel, the property manager, was very helpful and responsive.

For me, the location was perfect. The Supermaxi market was just across the street, and the walk to El Centro was just a nice distance to get some exercise. The neighborhood is quiet, and there is a small family-oriented park across the street. I highly recommend the condo.

Perfect stay at this modern upscale condo!

  • 5 of 5

The condo was everything we hoped for. The location was terrific. It was a short walk to El Centro or if it was raining the taxis were easy to grab right outside the door for $1.50- $2.00 anywhere we wanted to go. The cleaner arrived promptly each week and the condo was spotless. It was very quiet to sleep despite being close to a busy street, thanks to the double paned windows. We enjoyed the views from the kitchen and living area...looking up to the mountains. Loved the hot shower and the "rain" shower head above. The Property Manager was extremely helpful and so sweet to deal with. It was a perfect stay...thank you Katherine and your team..we felt safe and very cared for in your home!

Extremely well appointed apartment in a safe, quiet area. Immaculately clean, well equipped with everything you need, everything. Site manager is super to deal with, as are the owners. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Stay at this Condo

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay while in Cuenca! We rented it for the month of July and could not be happier with our accommodations. The view was breathtaking and the location was within walking distance to so many destinations for us. Markets are close by for adding groceries to the fully-stocked kitchen. There was nothing we wished had been included in our stay. For two friends traveling, having 2 separate bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, was perfect. And there is a separate half bath near the living area for guests. We were greeted on Day 1 with fresh flowers and fully apprised of many options in the city with the detailed notebook that is part of the Condo. The manager, Maribel, went out of her way to make us feel welcome and at home. We would highly recommend this Condo to anyone visiting Cuenca.

A Great place to stay while in Cuenca

  • 5 of 5

We Highly recommend the Bishop Condo in Cuenca!! For the past 18 days we had a wonderful stay, the condo is close to all the things you need while on vacation. You have the Super Maxi, Bakeries, Restaurants, a wonderful walk to town, or to the beautiful river. Every Taxi driver knows how to get you back to the Condo, you just say Avenue Americas and Lamar and for this Gringo your on your way to the Condo. Our group of 4 (2 couples) had plenty of space at the condo, and the 2 bedrooms and bathrooms were extremely private. Our house-keeper Rosa was super efficient and kept our place looking Great. House manager Maribel was wonderful and helped us through-out with our questions and always give us the right answers. What really impressed us is we asked for fans and in no time 2 new fans appeared in the condo. (we sleep under ceiling fans and so used to it). Love Cuenca, love the people and a great big Thank You to Mr. an Mrs. Bishop for giving us a GREAT place to stay while in Cuenca!!!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the very wondeful review. It gives a nice sense of what it's like to stay at the condo and in Cuenca. We're glad you enjoyed the fans, and thanks for the explanation. We were wondering why you felt Cuenca was hot compared to San Antonio! We do occasionally get some warm days, but generally people want the heater. Hope you guys will return for a longer stay next time. Thanks again, Katherine

Cuenca is surrounded by mountains, and traversed by 4 rivers. The largest river runs through the city separating the elevated old town from the newer part of town on the other side. On the steep banks of the river houses are built on several levels. This Barranco, as it is called, is dramatic and historic, Large shady sidewalks line the other side of the river. Cuenca is a large enough city to entertain you, but with a small town feel. The historical area is large, still undergoing restoration. There are many museums, ruins, concerts, artists and artisans and most of it is free. The Caja National Park is a must see as well. There are many day trips you can take, and several tour companies offer services.
