Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Toucari - Coconut Cottage

A traditionally styled 2-bedroom Caribbean home with a large west-facing veranda

Coconut Cottage may just be the prettiest house in Dominica.

Situated in Toucari just 3 miles north of Portsmouth, this traditionally styled cottage nestles on the hillside right in the centre of Toucari Bay with a breathtaking view of the sparkling Caribbean Sea and the lush mountains. Built in 2013 by local craftsmen from the village of Toucari, the structure is all timber with cool tiled floors. You will feel like you have stepped into a real Caribbean home when you enter this airy, sunlight-filled cottage.

Coconut Cottage is the perfect place for discovering the beauty and wonders of this unspoilt nature island. Within 5 minutes of your door there is the bay and beach, the village of Toucari and two trails to little known waterfalls. Plus you have our property manager as your neighbour and that million-dollar Caribbean view that completes any tropical vacation.

Welcome to Coconut Cottage, a traditionally designed Caribbean home with modern convenience and an indisputable feeling of being somewhere really special.

Coconut Cottage includes:

A large open verandah with spectacular views of the Caribbean Sea, chaise longue, sun-lounger, dining table & chairs.

About Andrew and Kate Thorley

We are husband and wife, Andrew and Kate, from England. We both grew up in the north, worked, travelled and met in the UK military. We married 25 years ago and spent 10 years with serious jobs in London, then decided to change our lives. We bought a chalet in France and hosted a full-service ski lodge for 6 years. In 2008 we were looking for our next great adventure and came to Dominica. We now split our time between Toucari and our family back in UK.

Andrew and Kate Thorley purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Andrew and Kate Thorley chose Dominica

We came to Dominica for 6 weeks in 2008 and toured every corner of the island. Toucari is where we decided to look for property. The descriptions we use on this website say it all. So with a place to live for ourselves, we set to building the prettiest rental cottage the island has ever had. Designed to look and feel traditionally Caribbean, but with the size and conveniences of a modern home. This is our labour of love. We have lived in the cottage for a few months ourselves and cannot think of another place in the world we would rather be.

What makes this cottage unique

Choices of accommodation in Dominica are limited. Some are beautiful but highly priced lodges, some are tired, budget-priced cottages. Many are concrete built villas the like you would see in Florida or southern France.

Coconut Cottage is one of a few that try to break this pattern. Come to a genuine Caribbean village, live for a while in a timber house surrounded by nature. Just sit on the verandah in the fresh Caribbean breeze and watch the sailboats and cruise ships pass by, the fishermen struggle with their catch, the hummingbirds in the tree right by you, the magnificent frigate bird soaring overhead or the zandoli tree lizard that is perched looking straight back at you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I don't think airbnb's 5 stars are really enough for Andrew and Kate's cottage. The view is enough for 5 stars on its own. (I can't count the number of rainbows over the ocean we got to see.) And everything - from the on-demand hot water to the US and UK outlets was new and well thought out. Though exciting to get to the first time, the location is great: green and peaceful, while still convenient to Portsmouth's shops and restaurants. (The hosts have written a very handy guide to these.) We look forward to our next trip to this friendly, beautiful island and, hopefully, this house!

coconut cottage

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a great week at coconut cottage. Everything is as appears in the pictures and has been perfectly thought out by Andrew and Kate. The house is perfect and has everything you need for an island getaway. The pictures on websites do not do coconut cottage justice nor do any pictures of dominica for that matter - the island is stunningly beautiful in a way that photos do not capture. Andrew was great to talk to before the trip and really helpful with all questions I asked. Coconut cottage was a really good way to experience village life. Toucari is a calm place with really friendly and pleasant people. Son, Casso, Mick, and Derick (all members of the same family who live nearby) were all really helpful to us during our stay and we hope to see them again at some point. I can't say enough good things about our experience in Coconut cottage, Toucari, or Dominica in general. We loved it all.

You will not want to leave the view!

  • 5 of 5

Coconut cottage is exactly as you see in the photos. It is a beautiful home with everything you need. The island has much to offer nature lovers but I guarantee you will find it hard to leave the view from the deck. From first thing in the morning with coffee to sunset with a drink in hand you can't beat the view! Our arrival was greeted by Son and Caso who were proud to show us the house and make sure we were ok. He is only a shout away and eager to help. Andrew and his wife Kate have thought of everything so make sure you read their binder on the house, things to do, restaurants, etc...

Andrew was remarkably quick to answer any questions before, during and even after our stay. He even came to our rescue when our car battery died!

The only negative I must report is early roosters and late night dog squabbles. You are living amongst the locals and their way of life includes free range animals. Don't be surprised if those animals come for a visit. We had a white noise app on our device but it is not rooster proof!

Owner's Response: Thank you Dan and Michelle for a lovely review. I mentioned the rooster to our neighbour and it is now in the pot!

Toucari

What a great experience all around. My husband and I spent a week at coconut cottage. BEAUTIFUL and what a view. It was hard to even leave the house. Such a great experience...the people were friendly and the island was one of a kind. Great snorkeling so definitely bring your gear. Only suggestions I would have for future travelers: saturdays are the market in portsmouth (fruits/veggies/fish) so if you plan on cooking plan accordingly because the stores are limited. Mostly dry goods, DVD player only works with European disks, bring gifts for the neighbors as they are wonderful and appreciative and in need. 5 stars!!

Fantastic stay at Coconut Cottage

  • 5 of 5

As with other reviews, it is difficult to add anything else here. The check in with "Son" was fast and easy, the house was beautiful, exceptionally clean, very well equipped, and comfortable. We especially enjoyed sitting on the deck, enjoying appies and drinks while the sun went down over the ocean. Spectacular views.

The only slightly annoying thing was the roosters starting up at 3:30 in the am, but hey, its the tropics so you get used to it pretty quickly. We will definitely come back to Coconut Cottage and highly recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: Thank you Suzan for your lovely review. It’s great that you enjoyed the deck as much as we do, but sorry about the rooster. They can be annoying but usually only temporary because soon after one comes of age it is headed for the cooking pot!

The ULTIMATE Dominican experience!

  • 5 of 5

This is the most difficult review I have ever written. Everything that could be said has already been said about this home. And how many descriptive words can one use? Let me begin by saying that after traveling about the Caribbean for the last 15 years - the last 7 years having been spent in VRBO sites - this is the very first time I have cried when I had to leave a place ... and we have spent the last 2 previous years on Dominica.

From the moment you arrive and are greeted by Mr. Douglas and step into Coconut Cottage you know that you are "home"! The Cottage is beautiful and everything you would have expected it to be by the photos on the site. Andrew and Kate have thoughtfully considered everything and there is nothing lacking in the cottage that you could possibly want...except for more time there! The Cottage is basically brand new and has been tastefully decorated. You will not need the living room or the television...the deck and view demand endless hours spent there...with a Kubuli in hand, no doubt!

You are truly going to have a "Caribbean experience" by being in the midst of the village of Toucari. I miss laying in bed in the morning, listening to the village wake up for the day. Or hearing the sound of the surf below, or the music waft up from the rum shops on the main street, or the soft laughter and conversation of neighbors...

After having spent the last 2 years on the Atlantic side of the island, it was a REAL treat to be on the Caribbean side. And Toucari is in the perfect location for a whole lot of exploring and activities only short drives away. Don't miss a picnic at Capuchin and the amazing views, then a walk up the WNT for a beautiful trek (as long as you want to make it) through rain forest with a stream, small waterfall, and old plantation to boot. Or the Syndicate Trail .... we had both to ourselves! Wonderful!!! Cabrits insures a couple of visits as there is much to see and explore. And, of course, beautiful Toucari and Douglas bays for sunning, swimming, and snorkeling.

How we miss the neighbors that felt like family - Son, Tata, Casso and his children, and Christine! Kind, wonderful people that have so much to share with you! I can still hear Son calling, "Halllloooooo" as he walked up to our door bringing a morning treat of coconut or sapodilla or bananas... How blessed we were by all of them!

We were TOTALLY smitten by Coconut Cottage...and you will be too. We promise, you won't regret staying here!!

Absolutely Fantastic Honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5

We chose Coconut Cottage for our Honeymoon house because of the privacy and amazing view and it didnt disappoint. The area is nice, people are friendly and there are tons of things to do, or not do depending on your goals. The house was super clean, well equipped and comfortable. We spent a majority of our time on the porch enjoying the most fantastic view, watching sailboats pass and watching people snorkel in Toucari Bay. It is located just 15-20 mins from Portsmouth, so we could enjoy the city as well. Many roads to explore leading up the mountains in this area that provide breathtaking views. The caretaker, Son and his family were fantastic - helping us carry our luggage in, showing us around and checking on us. Christine takes care of the cleaning and she does the absolute best job, the house is spotless! The only complaint I had was that the beds were not as comfortable as I like, though that is each person's individual preference. Coconut Cottage is a definite must stay in Dominica!

Owner's Response: Thank you Kirsten for this lovely review. (Just a note to readers, the mattress is new and quite firm - although may have softened up a bit after our honeymooners!)

So you may be tempted to sit on the deck all day and enjoy the beautiful view, watch the hummingbirds hover from flower to flower or check the sky for the broad-winged hawk or frigate bird. But we are surrounded by experiences and adventures. Within walking distance you can swim, snorkel, paddle-board, kayak, drink with the locals or eat lovely food on the beach. Our friend and neighbour will take you out for a leisurely boat trip to see the bat cave and snorkel on the WWI sunken wreck or to go fishing. He will also take you the 5 minute drive to one of two trails to two very different hidden waterfalls. Within a ten minute drive you can be at Cold Soufriere, a small area of bubbling mud in the centre of our drive-through volcano. Also just a ten minute drive is Cabrits National Park with Fort Shirley and some lovely forest walks to the ruins of a great British garrison, crumbling defenses with cannons still in place. And there is another great experience just 10 minutes away - the Indian River where you will be rowed up the mangrove edged river as Jonny Depp was in Pirates of the Caribbean. The list goes on, beach restaurants in Lagon, the islands biggest beach at Purple Turtle, bars, restaurants, the open fruit and veg market, massive tuna, marlin and mahi-mahi available straight from the fishing boat - all of this within a 15 minute drive or less.
