About the property

Just a few minutes' walk to the village, the beach, a bar and restaurant

This is a beautiful cottage with a spectacular ocean view and all modern convenience including air-conditioning and a dishwasher. Also, being timber and with plenty of opening windows, it is a cool, traditional Caribbean home. It is only a 3 minute walk down the hill is the small village of Toucari with its friendly local community, a lovely small beach, a couple of bars and Derrick’s fabulous beach bar and restaurant Keepin’ it Real. The bay has a great reef for snorkelling and paddle-boards for exploring. We are just 10 minutes from two of the island’s great treasures, Fort Shirley and Indian River. The town of Portsmouth with shops, restaurants, the vibrant fresh-fruit, vegetable and fish market and much more is just 3 miles away.

Since the passage of hurricane Maria in 2017 our services and amenities have slowly been restored. Please contact me for the up to date situation as it is changing all the time.

Coconut Cottage may just be the prettiest house in Dominica and the breath-taking views from the spacious outside deck will capture your heart. Built in 2013 by local craftsmen from the village of Toucari, the structure is all timber with cool tiled floors and large windows. You will feel like you have stepped into a real Caribbean home when you enter this airy, sunlight-filled cottage.

Coconut Cottage is the perfect place for discovering the beauty and wonders of this unspoilt nature island. As well as the village of Toucari with its bay and beach, you have two trails to little-known waterfalls within 5 minutes and several other exciting adventures a short drive away. You also have our property manager as your neighbour with his experience of the local area and his own boat to give you a different view of the bay and the coast.

About Andrew Thorley

We are husband and wife, Andrew and Kate, from England. We both grew up in the north, worked, travelled and met in the UK military. We married 25 years ago and spent 10 years with serious jobs in London, then decided to change our lives. We bought a chalet in France and hosted a full-service ski lodge for 6 years. In 2008 we were looking for our next great adventure and came to Dominica. We now split our time between Toucari and our family back in UK.

Andrew Thorley purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Andrew Thorley chose Toucari

We came to Dominica for 6 weeks in 2008 and toured every corner of the island. Toucari is where we decided to look for property. The descriptions we use on this website say it all. So with a place to live for ourselves, we set to building the prettiest rental cottage the island has ever had. Designed to look and feel traditionally Caribbean, but with the size and conveniences of a modern home. This is our labour of love. We have lived in the cottage for a few months ourselves and cannot think of another place in the world we would rather be.

What makes this cottage unique

Choices of accommodation in Dominica are limited. Some are beautiful but highly priced lodges, some are tired, budget-priced cottages. Many are concrete built villas the like you would see in Florida or southern France.

Coconut Cottage is one of a few that try to break this pattern. Come to a genuine Caribbean village, live for a while in a timber house surrounded by nature. Just sit on the verandah in the fresh Caribbean breeze and watch the sailboats and cruise ships pass by, the fishermen struggle with their catch, the hummingbirds in the tree right by you, the magnificent frigate bird soaring overhead or the zandoli tree lizard that is perched looking straight back at you.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I don't think airbnb's 5 stars are really enough for Andrew and Kate's cottage. The view is enough for 5 stars on its own. (I can't count the number of rainbows over the ocean we got to see.) And everything - from the on-demand hot water to the US and UK outlets was new and well thought out. Though exciting to get to the first time, the location is great: green and peaceful, while still convenient to Portsmouth's shops and restaurants. (The hosts have written a very handy guide to these.) We look forward to our next trip to this friendly, beautiful island and, hopefully, this house!

Charming Cottage—Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

Our recent stay at Coconut Cottage was absolutely wonderful!!! The cottage itself is stunning, nicely decorated, very well-equipped, has a wonderful view over Toucari Bay and felt like a home away from home. Andrew and Kate were extremely friendly and very quick to respond to any questions and Caso, who lives next door, was also extremely helpful and readily available. Toucari Bay itself has a nice beach and some excellent snorkeling right from shore. We very much enjoyed eating dinner at the beachfront restaurant Keepin' it Real. The fresh fish and lobster were outstanding. We also enjoyed eating at Ray's Rotis and Madiba in nearby Portsmouth. Many nights we cooked our own meal and ate it on the wonderful deck overlooking the bay. We hope to be back again soon!

The cottage is very cute and cozy.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very cute, cozy and well maintained. The view of the bay and surrounding area is beautiful. My husband, myself and my two teenage children stayed at Coconut cottage for a week and enjoyed the locals, the beach and the peaceful atmosphere. It is a short walk to the beach and to the awesome restaurant, "Keepin it Real". We enjoyed the walk each day as we passed by the goats that maintained the ditch and kept us thoroughly entertained. Caso and his family did a great job coordinating trips, taking us fishing and his daughter did an excellent job cooking the fish we caught. There was never a time we didn't have everything we needed. Loved the stay and hope to go back.

A clean, cozy, lovely place to get away from it all...

  • 5 of 5

We had two awesome weeks in this perfectly maintained, clean cottage. The veranda offers a great view with magic sunsets, the air inside is never too hot thanks to many windows and doors to be opened. The kitchen is sufficient equipped with everything one needs for cooking. We had great days and great nights, always enough water, a powerful shower and a perfectly working WIFI. The cottage is located in a remote, but easily accessible part of the island, supermarkets / local shops are within a 10 - 15 minutes drive.

The only thing you might find a little bit annoying are the neighbors (especially her...) sometimes arguing quite loud near your house. But we saw it as a kind of possibility to learn some local swear words and most of the time we took it as a more or less amusing insight in local communication habits...

We´d strongly recommend the cottage and would definitely book it again!!!

Wonderful caretakers, not so wonderful experience

  • 2 of 5

Our trip to Dominica was peaceful, refreshing, and the exact holiday we needed... except for our experience with the house itself.

Upon arriving, despite it being somewhat late (roughly 9 pm) we were shown around by the very gracious and kind on-premises care takers for the house, Son and his son, Caso. Their entire family really made the trip for us, providing the majority of our tour guide services around the island. Caso would lead our trips while his young girls accompanied us on nearly every excursion (by request of course), as they were on a school break too.

After three separate flights into country, we were happy to check in the first evening, have a warm shower, and get to bed so that we could get up early the next day and start our vacation. The next morning, we awoke to only sounds of gurgling and hissing from the faucets, with no water to be seen. We emailed the owners and expressed our concern to house's care takers, and each day we would receive a shrug accompanied by a quizzical look of disbelief, reassurance that the water sometimes does that an would be back on soon, and a half-hearted email response from the distant owners referring to having contacted the water company and expressing a minimal amount of concern and apology for the situation.

It was difficult to have to continually complain about not having water to the caretakers who did not appear to have any amenities whatsoever, but without running water, it is very difficult to bathe post-snorkeling trip, let alone make use of the other promised amenities that were included with the property (dish washer, clothes washer, toilets, showers, drinking water, cooking etc.) We were offered to relocate into another cottage half way through our trip, but we would have lost the view, the dishwasher, and the laundry anyways. And thank goodness we didn't move, because we later found out the other cottage didn't have water either!

We ended up spending an inordinate amount of time lugging water back and forth up the hill just to be able to flush the toilet, and it was a significant interruption to the holiday that we had worked so hard to plan, not to mention afford. Despite every other aspect of the trip being flawless, the water was still a significant interruption and hassle. The most disturbing part of the entire scenario was that there was a water storage tank being installed on the property, which leads me to believe the issue was not a new one.

Owner's Response: Firstly, the water supply problem to the village was fixed in June 2017 and the water pressure at the cottage is great. This is a rather unfair review which describes a very difficult situation that was out of our control. The support Amber received locally, and from me by email, was much greater than she describes, but it was frustrating for all of us that the water company could not locate and fix the problem. In direct response to Amber’s comments about me and my team, it is worth noting that during her time of need: Caso provided her with a constant supply of water in 7 one gallon containers for the bathroom and kitchen; she had access to a shower in another cottage for the whole length of her stay and access to a washing machine for 5 out of the 7 days; there is a shower on the beach for a post snorkelling rinse; I emailed Amber daily after she contacted had me – my concern and my apologies were sincere; she was offered alternative accommodation with water and turned it down. I am very pleased that every other aspect of Amber’s stay was, as she said - flawless.

Fantastic home with stunning views of the Caribbean Sea

  • 5 of 5

This is our second time at the Coconut Cottage. We absolutely love it here and Toucarie Bay! The home is well equipped, comfortable and now has a/c in the King bedroom which is a huge plus. The sunsets from the deck are some of the most stunning in the Caribbean! Our children really enjoyed the neighbor's cats and dogs that would come over once in a while to say hi. The caretakers, Son and Caseo, welcomed us warmly and remembered us from the year prior. They are so friendly and knowledgeable. Be sure to take Caseo's boat and snorkeling tour of Toucari Bay. There is a shipwreck and a cave to explore. Take a quick walk down to the village of Toucarie from the cottage and experience a fabulous meal at Keepin' It Real or Toucarie Beachfront Bar & Grill. Great fresh food and vibes! We danced the night away at Toucarie Beachfront Bar & Grill and the next day rented kayaks and paddle boards from Derek @ Keepin' It Real. We can't wait to go back!

coconut cottage

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a great week at coconut cottage. Everything is as appears in the pictures and has been perfectly thought out by Andrew and Kate. The house is perfect and has everything you need for an island getaway. The pictures on websites do not do coconut cottage justice nor do any pictures of dominica for that matter - the island is stunningly beautiful in a way that photos do not capture. Andrew was great to talk to before the trip and really helpful with all questions I asked. Coconut cottage was a really good way to experience village life. Toucari is a calm place with really friendly and pleasant people. Son, Casso, Mick, and Derick (all members of the same family who live nearby) were all really helpful to us during our stay and we hope to see them again at some point. I can't say enough good things about our experience in Coconut cottage, Toucari, or Dominica in general. We loved it all.

So you may be tempted to sit on the deck all day and enjoy the beautiful view, watch the hummingbirds hover from flower to flower or check the sky for the broad-winged hawk or frigate bird. But we are surrounded by experiences and adventures. Within walking distance you can swim, snorkel, paddle-board, kayak, drink with the locals or eat lovely food on the beach. Our friend and neighbour will take you out for a leisurely boat trip to see the bat cave and snorkel on the WWI sunken wreck or to go fishing. He will also take you the 5 minute drive to one of two trails to two very different hidden waterfalls. Within a ten minute drive you can be at Cold Soufriere, a small area of bubbling mud in the centre of our drive-through volcano. Also just a ten minute drive is Cabrits National Park with Fort Shirley and some lovely forest walks to the ruins of a great British garrison, crumbling defenses with cannons still in place. And there is another great experience just 10 minutes away - the Indian River where you will be rowed up the mangrove edged river as Jonny Depp was in Pirates of the Caribbean. The list goes on, beach restaurants in Lagon, the islands biggest beach at Purple Turtle, bars, restaurants, the open fruit and veg market, massive tuna, marlin and mahi-mahi available straight from the fishing boat - all of this within a 15 minute drive or less.
