About the property

Villa near beaches, sleeps 12, pool, huge terrace with mountain view

Very attractive private family-home villa with pool, within 10-15 minutes drive to five lovely beaches (with great surfing) and various golf courses. The villa is set in its own large garden, with a fantastic location on the lower slopes of the hills running up from the sea, with a marvellous view up to the wooded mountain of Sintra. The villa is large, with lovely spacious living rooms, with a lawn, a big terrace and its own sheltered swimming pool.

The house is 45 minutes drive from Lisbon and Lisbon airport and is 15 minutes from the historic town of Sintra and from various beautiful palaces. Tennis courts, mountain biking, golf courses and riding facilities are also all within 15 minutes drive. There are great restaurants nearby, especially for seafood.

The region is one of the most interesting in Portugal. The nearby town of Colares is charming and the villages of Galamares and Mucifal have handy shopping facilities. The beaches are varied and sandy.

Superb family villa, great beach access, pool: - Sandy beaches galore all along the coast nearby, with top surfing

- Many superb seafood and other restaurants nearby

- Eight excellent golf courses close by

- Tennis, riding, mountain biking

- But it is also great just to relax by the pool in the villa, with its breath-taking mountain views

- Historic Lisbon and Sintra nearby, with art galleries and palaces and festivals

- Unusually, for Portugal, there are many fabulous walks also nearby, both along the coastal clifftops and in the mountain and on the hilltop of Sintra

- An organic farm shop is 10 minutes walk away. Other shops, street markets and supermarkets are all nearby ... and tourist shopping is just a short drive away in Sintra.

- The old and nearby small town of Colares is famous for its wine, and the viticulture cellars and facilities can be visited.

- Colares also has a stunning hill-top old church. There are festivals in the summer in Sintra (arts and music), in Mucifal (local folk festival) and elsewhere

Beaches: The local region is famous for its beaches, restaurants, palaces, walking and golf. And Lisbon is only 30-40 minutes away ...

The beaches of Sintra's coastline are famous: Praia Grande (great for surfing), Praia das Maçãs, Praia da Adraga, pRAIA DA uRSA and Magoito (further south), all from 10 to 20 minutes car trip from the house. There is another really big beach called Guincho south west of the house, where the surfing world championships have been held.

Around the sandy stretch of the Praia das Maçãs there are several restaurants (Neptuno is great), cafés, bars, a disco, tennis courts, as well as shops selling local crafts, esplanades and excellent food both in the summer or in the winter. A picturesque tramline connects Praia das Maçãs, Colares and Sintra. There are also a number of excellent restaurants on Guincho beach.

About Sintra: Sintra town is a great place to visit. The old town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995 maintains. Scattered on the hillside there are buildings and sites of historical and architectural interest. The most unusual is possibly Palácio da Pena, a 19th Century folly built by D. Fernando II boasting different styles. Within the old town there are several museums, including the famous Museu do Brinquedo showing toys from the past and present. The most interesting old building is the well-preserved medieval Palacio Nacional do Sintra, in the old town, which is well worth a visit.

There are many handicraft and antiques shops (also in San Pedro). The modern art gallery is new and really good. It has new shows all the time. It is located in the newer part of town.

You can see Sintra by horse-drawn carriages, which will take you around the town as well as Sintra's mountains.

Overlooking the town are the ruined ramparts of the Castelo dos Mouros, and the eccentric Pena Palace.

Why Mark Hudson chose Mucifal

The villa was the family home of my parents-in-law, who no longer live there. However, it is still the family holiday home.

What makes this villa unique

* The house has a stunning view of the mountain of Sintra, from a lovely and huge terrace, below which the lawn slopes gently down to the pool.

* The villa is large but it is still cosy and very easy to live in.

* It is in a beautiful area, within easy reach of 5 attractive beaches, many restaurants, lots of unique sights and walks (in Sintra and the Serra) .. and yet is only 45 minutes from the centre of Lisbon.

Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The villa is a wonderful place to stay, it is very large and spacious but also has a homely feel to it, especially due to the Portuguese decor and style. The villa is very well equipped and each room is decorated tastefully. The pool was great fun, and we spent the evenings on the veranda. The views are beautiful, we really enjoyed the local village shops and cafes. There is plenty to do in sintra and Lisbon which are both easy to travel to. We also took the old tram to the beach and a scenic bus route to cascais. It was all fabulous

Massive villa

  • 5 of 5

We had been let down by a previous owner in a previous booking and 3 months before we were due to go we were in a panic!

We could not have been helped more by the honour Mark who was brilliant throughout the process.....we rent a lot and I have never had such a comprehensive list of information for staying at this villa....amazing!

The key collection process was efficient and simple.

It took 20 mins just to be shown around!

Very spacious villa is an understatement.

We were a group of 10 and it had everything we needed and we never felt under each others feet.

The view is just stunning.

The location is brilliant.

10 minutes to Sintra, which also has a fast train to Lisbon.

Hypermarket 15 mins away.

10 mins from 2 lovely beaches, 25 minutes from Cascais.

Lisbon airport an easy 30 mins.

Home from home

  • 5 of 5

Great house with lovely views. We had a very comfortable stay. Lots of great things to look at nearby and great beaches. We made full use of the swimming pool and spent a lot of time on the terrace admiring the surroundings.

As good as it looks

  • 5 of 5

Casa do Cedro is quite as lovely as it looks. It is wonderfully spacious, comfortable and laid out and furnished with considerable style. While it can easily accomodate the full complement of 12, it is not just one big open plan space, and so is perfectly intimate for a smaller number. It is lovely spilling out from the kitchen onto the terrace, wandering down to the pool when it is hot, and retreating to the classically decorated sitting room.

Stunning rental property

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived we felt at home. The property was immaculate but not sterile like so many rental properties can be, with more than enough space for a large party of us and wonderful views over the mountains. Although we whiled away many days playing badminton in the garden, by the pool or lunches on the beautiful terrace when we did decide to venture out we found that there was lots to do within easy reach. The secluded 'beach of the bear' priya de orsa, was one of our favourites though there are also larger beaches with restaurants serving wonderful seafood and cervejas. I would highly recommend this property; I can't wait to go back!

Great beaches are a very short drive away. The house is in the countryside, on the outskirts of Galamares village. The villa is 45 minutes drive from Lisbon and Lisbon airport and 15 minutes from the historic town of Sintra and from various beautiful palaces. Tennis courts, golf courses and riding facilities are also all within 15 minutes drive. There are great restaurants nearby, especially for seafood. Coastal nightlight buzzes with bars and a few nightclubs. Further afield is the charming, cliff-perched fishing village of Ericeira, with narrow cobbled streets and famous seafood restaurants. The region is one of the most interesting in Portugal. The nearby town of Colares is charming and the villages of Galamares and Mucifal have handy shopping facilities. Cascais town has a great shopping centre. In Sintra see the old palace, the fairytale mountaintop Palacio da Pena and the romantic Montserrat (walking distance). The many beaches are sandy and fun, with serious surfing.

Other Activities: Golf courses and many of Portugal´s top palaces and sights are within easy distance ... as well as Lisbon

Golf: Sintra is also good for golf holiday makers: there are 8 courses within easy reach, and a driving range.

The Penha Longa course (home of the Estoril Open) is 10 km away and hosts several championships. It has an excellent level of maintenance and beautiful panoramic views over the Sintra hill (Serra de Sintra). Also nearby are Estoril Golf, Quinta da Marinha Golf, Quinta da Beloura Golf, Belas Golf – all about 30 min. drive from the villa. Cascais, an old fishing town has wonderful cafes, restaurants, shops and discotheques and a new marina (with plenty of restaurants) where you can play all of the year. Estoril has, also, to offer you an interesting night life and several golf courses.
