If your quest is to find the finest mountain view laid-back Ambience Arizona has to offer then you've come to the right place (so our guests tell us.)
MiraMontes guests frequently comment how well they sleep - better than they can ever remember. Must be the peace and quiet, fresh mountain air and comfortable beds.
MiraMontes itself has approx. 2250 sq ft indoor space with at least that much again in verandas and decks, set on 12 acres with Catalina State Park and mountains as a backdrop.
MiraMontes views include 20,000 acres of mountain without a neighbor in sight. Yet MiraMontes is just 5-10 minutes from a gas station, grocery store, golf, and restaurants.
Each bedroom has its own private bathroom...the Master bedroom opens to the pool enclosure. The master bedroom bathroom with its enormous shower tiled with travertine has a mountain view.
Between the two bedroom suites is an adequate well-stocked linen cupboard..
A breakfast nook accommodates 4 in red leather-backed chairs. The dining table with black leather high-backed chairs seats 8-10 comfortably.
Patio furniture can easily be configured to seat 4, 6 or 10 guests for dinner..an ambience you and your guests will never forget. All kitchen appliances are electric. A gas-burning grill is on the Patio for those who enjoy barbecues.
From Miramontes one can hike in any direction. Up the mountain, along the wash, down the hill - it is all lovely.
MiraMontes offers exceptional bird watching. Quail, falcons, hawks, owls, vultures, the occasional eagle. Cactus wrens abound. Even year-round hummingbirds. Roadrunners are frequent visitors.
MiraMontes' easterly orientation catches the warm morning sun. The verandas provide shade during the midday and afternoon glare.
Great for entertaining especially as the sun goes down - Sundowner time is always special at MiraMontes.
Sunsets transform the mountain to a pink glow. the moon rises and the stars come out...
Imagine the resident pair of great-horned owls calling gently to each other; the musical sound of a distant coyote yelping party.
An occasional nocturnal owl, kit fox or havelina sighting is enough to change the subject of almost any conversation.
The aroma of woodsmoke is especially seductive under Arizona night sky illuminated by the brightest stars.
Miramontes has an indoor beehive fireplace and an outdoor woodburning fireplace especially enjoyable by star - or moonlight..
Miramontes is listed as 'wheelchair-accessible.' All rooms are on the same floor and the flooring is travertine which facilitates indoor wheelchair manoevering. The grounds, surroundings and hikes are not at all wheelchair-accessible however.
Hans and Elma grew up near Cape Town, South Africa.
Elma, trained as a radiographer but assisted Hans operate a successful mining conference company for many years.
Hans completed a Ph D in Space chemistry at the University of Cape Town and earned his Pilot Wings from the South African Air Force. He now flies gliders and collects minerals.
Hans' career as a mining consultant requires frequent travel to faraway places. Hans' hobby is finding and improving tranquil homes. MiraMontes is Hans' and Elma's pride and joy. During three winter months each year when Hans and Elma spend time in Africa, they are delighted to share MiraMontes with like-minded guests.
MiraMontes is in Phase 2 of a five-stage sustainability project.. Water harvesting, tree growing, topsoil development, organic vegetable cultivation; soil erosion abatement; solar hot water; solar electric generation.
Elma VonMichaelis purchased this lodge in 2007
In the course of his extensive travels, Hans has found several magic spots in the world. One of these is a guest farm called Etusis in central Namibia. The mountain setting, vegetation and climate at MiraMontes is almost identical to that at Etusis. Miramontes is, however, very much easier to get to and is much more luxurious. For most of the year MiraMontes is the owners' personal home and residence as the large number of shade trees planted need regular watering through the summer months.
To get to Etusis requires a 2-1/2 hr flight from Johannesburg to Windhoek then a two-hour drive west to Karibib followed by a 40-min drive south to the farm in the middle of 'nowhere'.
MiraMontes offers similar charm with superior accommodation, only 30-min N of Tucson and within 5-20 minutes of every amenity a guest could possibly wish for.
Step out of MiraMontes home and take off in any direction on a great hiking adventure. Up the mountain, into the foothills, along the wash or down the hill...its all beautiful and interesting.
Hans enjoys the rustic approach to MiraMontes through the Mesquite bosque across two mostly dry washes populated by free ranging cows and calves. He particularly enjoys coming along the long driveway up to Miramontes as the spectacular mountains suddenly come into view.
Elma appreciates MiraMonte's proximity to shopping, gas, groceries, hair salon, excellent restaurants, golf courses, movie houses etc.
Note: MiraMontes is all on one floor and therefore easily accessible to wheelchairs. There are however no additional 'wheelchair accessible' features such as support railings in the bathroom.
We found MiraMontes to be wonderfully quiet, secluded, and restful. The magnificent views of the Catalina Mountains were a constant pleasure. Watching the sunset while enjoying the hot tub was a fine way to end each day. The home itself is beautifully designed and decorated; the kitchen is well stocked for cooking. Antoinette, the manager, was highly informative and welcoming. We had the pleasure of spending some time with Hans, the owner, and found him to be friendly and knowledgeable. We have rented a number of homes both in the US and in Europe and this is one of the best!
Our party of 4 from Minnesota enjoyed our 6 night stay in this beautiful vacation rental. If you are looking for a quiet, secluded rental with a beautiful view of the Catalina Mountains, we highly recommend this stunning vacation home. Although the pool was too cool to swim in during our mid-January stay we made use of the hot tub on the roof. Star gazing and coyotes howling added to the experience.
Owners Elma and Hans were a pleasure to visit with and more than gracious hosts. The home is supplied with shampoo & conditioner, hand soaps, laundry soap, and as others have noted: plentiful spices and you will never run out of tableware.
The only note I would add is that I was glad our car rental was an SUV with higher clearance. Although smaller cars are able to navigate the sandy, hilly road to the rental, the majority of vehicles we met on the local road were pick ups or SUV's.
My husband & I greatly enjoyed the solitude of this home, we are birders & there was much to see just sitting in the back patio . On the roof top deck the first morning a Golden Eagle sat politely in a nearby tree for us to see.
The backdrop is lovely with the huge rocks in the distance & the Catalina Mts. We love to cook & prepare our own meals, this kitchen had everything we needed. It was also wonderful to have a pantry with a few basics like spices, salt etc. The house was extremely clean. We certainly hope to return again next winter.
We totally loved our stay at Mira Montes. The ambiance and natural beauty outside combined with the tasteful decor inside the home made for a perfect getaway. The outside veranda in back provided the perfect setting for gazing at the mountains and desert scenery. The infinity pool was simply amazing and refreshing. Lots of patio furniture to relax in. Inside the home, every detail for a guest's comfort has been provided. We particularly appreciated the well-stocked upscale kitchen where we prepared all of our meals. We have stayed at many vacation properties and have never seen a kitchen that was stocked with such a variety of herbs and cooking basics as well as plenty of cutlery and dishware. Owners, Hans and Elma, were a pleasure to meet and saw to our every need. And handyman, C.J., helped us out on a couple of occasions. All in all, we definitely would like to return for another relaxing, peaceful stay.
We arrived at night and Hans was kind enough to meet us at the local grocery store to lead us up to the property. We were very pleased with the house; it was spacious, beautifully decorated and very comfortable. When we woke up in the morning it was a joy to see the magnificent mountain views. The outside patio is a perfect spot to enjoy those views. Hans has his office attached to the house so we saw him everyday. So much planning and work has been done to the house, it was very interesting to tour the property to see the sustainable elements that he has created. The kitchen is very well stocked. It was a pleasure to cook there and the house was a wonderful place to host a family brunch. We invited both Hans and Elma to join our family celebration. Our family enjoyed the day along with the the cool mountain breezes on the patio. We ate at the local restaurants and visited many of the local attractions. It was a memorable and wonderful family vacation!
My family and I arrived late into Tucson, but Hans was patiently waiting for us, with coffee and bread on hand for breakfast, to guide us to our destination. Yes, the road going to their home is rather precarious as many have pointed out, but a rather small detail when you arrive at their amazing place. The views are 2nd to none, and the home is very beautiful. The host and hostess were amazing, providing toys for our kids, checking up on us for all our needs, and just making sure our stay was everything it could be. The only comment from our end, is that perhaps one of the guest rooms have a king size bed. The beds that are there are great and comfortable, but for our travel size, a king size bed is often needed.
Again, great place and customer service. Would highly recommend staying here.
We loved our stay at Mira Montes. Looking out the window each morning to see those beautiful mountains and desert landscape was worth the whole trip! The home was immaculate; the kitchen was well appointed and the rest of the house just lovely. It was especially fun to take a shower with the little yellow headed Verdin pecking at the window!
It was a bit cool for the pool while we were there but we enjoyed the sunsets and star gazing from the hot tub each evening.
My husband wasn't too keen about the steep gravel road up to the house; I thought it was manageable and it shouldn't prevent anyone from thinking twice about staying here. We drove a late model Camry and it was fine.
The owners were especially welcoming. Hans took the time to show us his gardening projects and rock collection and Elma was so warm and friendly. Antoinette, the property manager, was extremely helpful with any question or need we had. We would stay again, no question.
