Hello, we are Troy & Holly Bailey from New Virginia IA. We are transplants from Maryland that moved to this beautiful state in 2006. We dairy farmed in Maryland and moved to Iowa to partake in its more laid back, less crowded atmosphere and get our hands dirty with the rich black soil that covers the state.
Holly Bailey purchased this barn in 2011
We needed a place for family and friends to stay when they came to visit so we turned our barn into a rustic hideaway that we thought others would enjoy too. And they do. The only complaints we get from our guest is that they don't want to leave.
The landscaping is always changing here between a field full of soybeans or corn to the north ,a pergola covered in blooming wisteria, or tulips everywhere in the spring, how about the smells of the lavender that draws the butterflies to its purple luster, the birds always singing a song in the bushes and vines as they make their way to vibrant red birdboxes filled with chirping babies. The trees that shade you on a hot day as you relax in your chaise and catch an afternoon nap. Maybe you all but fell asleep getting a massage outdoors while you take in all these sounds and smells. (we have a massuse that comes and gives massages here at the barn) in the winter you can curl up by the fireplace with your cocoa ,watch the sun rise while you sip your cup of joe, watch the stars twinkle above your head as you gaze out the sky lights ,catch up on movie time, remember what its like to relax and enjoy life.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE WONDERFUL BREAKFAST . IT IS SO PEACEFUL HERE AND CALM.IT MAKES FOR A GREAT RETREAT TO RECHARGE!
We had a girls' weekend (11 people) and loved our stay at the barn. There were plenty of beds and sleeping areas, the couches were comfortable. I can see how both small and large groups love the barn. The grill was great, the kitchen well-stocked with plenty of dishware, and campfire wood and marshmallow roasting sticks were provided (unfortunately it rained so we couldn't enjoy s'mores...but if the weather is good, all you need to bring is the food!). There were extra folding chairs and a table in a closet, a queen air mattress if needed--lots of attention to detail, as mentioned in other reviews. Holly was quick to reply to questions pre-stay, and left information in the barn about how to contact her if we had questions. As for the area--Lake Ahquabi State Park and at least two wineries are within a 20 minute drive. Great places to explore if you choose to leave the cozy barn!
We spent the Easter weekend down here with our daughter who is at Iowa State and us from Twin Cities. When we arrived the beautiful restored barn was waiting for arrival with everything you could possible need or want. From the full stocked kitchen to the amazing comfortable beds and furnishings throughout and the hair dryer in the bathroom to the amazing soaking tub!! The private garden out your doorstep was to die for and we spent much time sitting and enjoying. Has a great gas grill we used one night and used the oven in kitchen the other night. 10 mile drive to major grocery store and anything you would need for your meals. We took the scenic drive and visited the Madison County covered bridges for our day adventure. It was awesome to watch a thunderstorm come rolling in. Will definitely come back! Thank You!!
Our stay at the barn was perfect; there is impeccable attention to detail throughout, evidence of loving care poured into every room, and it is beautiful. We will definitely be staying above
I wanted to give one star so I could keep this place to myself, but I couldn't do it. Our stay was perfection and I've never seen antlers done so well! Honestly though, we couldn't tell from the pictures if the rustic décor was going to be cheap-cheesy-country-outdoorsy like so many people do, but when we got there we discovered it was nothing but class and high-quality down to the finest detail...totally out of the ordinary. I was completely impressed. Every couple of hours we would notice something new and talk about it. I loved the skylights, deep tub, fireplace, private driveway, stuffed animals, blanket and pillow choices, and origami papers. Holly thought of absolutely everything which made our stay uber relaxing...so free and easy.
The only thing I would share is to bring your groceries as the closest grocery store is about 20 mins away in Osceola or Indianola (unless you want to go explore those towns ;)). The Depot in New Virginia is NOT recommended.
It rained all weekend for us, which was great because we wanted to do nothing and it kept us indoors napping on the couches, watching TV in front of the fireplace, and drinking wine. It seemed like there were many small villages, parks, conservation areas and country sights to see in the area. Next time we go, we'll be touring them all!
Anyway, this was one of the nicest places I've ever stayed in my world travels and the total silence and peace was exactly what we needed to reset. Highly recommend!
